a trouvé ça carrément abusé, alors elle a fait ce que ferait n’importe quel geek qui se respecte : elle l’a transformé en vraie console Game Boy fonctionnelle. Et attention, je ne vous parle pas d’un vulgaire Raspberry Pi Zero planqué dedans avec un émulateur. Non, non, non, elle y a mis des vrais morceaux de Game Boy, avec de VRAIES cartouches qui tournent, ainsi qu’un circuit imprimé qu’elle a conçu elle-même.
Bah oui, pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué ?
Pour arriver à ses fins, elle a dû miniaturiser toute la logique d’une Game Boy sur un PCB de la taille d’un timbre-poste. Elle a installé l’écran le plus petit du marché (ce qui l’a obligée à retirer quelques briques LEGO au passage), passé un port USB-C pour l’alimentation, et même prévu des boutons totalement fonctionnels.
D’ailleurs, en août dernier, Natalie avait fait aussi le buzz avec
une Game Boy Color entièrement transparente
, circuit imprimé inclus. Elle a conçu un PCB en matériau acrylique transparent où on voit tous les fils de cuivre flotter dans le vide. Super beau, super technique, mais elle-même disait que c’était juste un projet artistique pour montrer son travail, et pas quelque chose de très pratique.
Elle a même fondé le
Modded Gameboy Club
, une communauté avec un Discord et un Wiki où les gens partagent leurs tutos pour réparer, modifier, upgrader leurs vieilles consoles Nintendo. Elle vend aussi des composants de seconde main pour les modders et partage ses designs de circuits en open source.
Et bonne nouvelle pour ceux qui voudraient reproduire sa version fonctionnelle de la LEGO Game Boy puisqu’elle a annoncé qu’elle publierait les schémas et les plans une fois qu’elle serait satisfaite du résultat final. Donc si vous avez des compétences en soudure et que l’idée de fabriquer un PCB custom ne vous fait pas peur, vous pourrez bientôt tenter l’aventure.

Et si je vous disais qu’un mec a réussi à prédire l’avenir avec la précision d’un oracle ? Et pas une vague prédiction à la Nostradamus où on peut interpréter n’importe quoi… Non, non, une vraie prédiction scientifique du style : “Ce truc devrait crasher vers septembre 2025”. Et devinez quoi ? Ça a effectivement crashé.
L’histoire commence en 2023, quand un certain Minki décide de tester une théorie complètement barrée. Le mec lit un article technique sur le moteur de DOOM et remarque un truc bizarre : une variable qui compte les démos du jeu qui s’incrémente en permanence, y compris quand une nouvelle démo commence. Cette variable se compare constamment avec sa valeur précédente, mais elle continue de grimper, encore et encore, jusqu’à… jusqu’à quoi exactement ?
Bah justement, c’est là que ça devient intéressant car Minki sort sa calculatrice et commence à faire ses petits calculs. Il sait que
selon la documentation technique de DOOM
, le moteur utilise des integers 16 bits pour optimiser les performances. Traduction pour les non-geeks : les nombres ont une limite, et quand on la dépasse, c’est le drame ! Un peu comme quand vous essayez de rentrer votre gros cul dans un ascenseur bondé. Sauf qu’ici, au lieu d’un ascenseur bloqué, on a un jeu qui explose.
Donc notre ami fait ses calculs et arrive à cette conclusion : DOOM devrait crasher après environ 2 ans et demi de fonctionnement continu. Et franchement, qui penserait à vérifier un truc pareil ? La plupart d’entre nous, on lance DOOM pour se défouler 30 minutes et on passe à autre chose. Mais minki, lui, il voit plus loin.
Alors il fait quoi ? Il prend un vieux PDA (si si, ces trucs qu’on utilisait avant les smartphones), il bricole une alimentation avec des batteries 18650 et un chargeur USB branché sur son routeur, et il lance DOOM. Puis il attend. Deux ans et demi. Pour de vrai.
Pendant ce temps, vous et moi, on a changé trois fois de téléphone, bingé 47 séries Netflix, survécu à François Bayrou, vu l’IA devenir mainstream… Et Minki ? Bah lui, il avait DOOM qui tournait dans un coin de son appart…
Et le plus dingue, c’est que ça a marché exactement comme prévu.

, le jeu a crashé “seulement quelques heures après avoir passé les deux ans et demi”. Boom. Prédiction confirmée. Le mec a calculé la mort de DOOM avec une précision chirurgicale.
Ici, pas besoin d’exploits sophistiqués ou d’outils de pentest dernier cri. Juste de la curiosité, des maths, et une patience de moine tibétain. Et c’est comme ça que Minki a transformé un bug théorique en prédiction concrète, puis en réalité observable.
En fait,
les bugs d’overflow de DOOM sont légion
. Si vous avez plus de 64 lignes défilantes, ça crash. Si une balle traverse plus de 128 objets, ça bug. Si vous construisez une zone de plus de 2500 unités de hauteur, le moteur panique. C’est un peu comme si le jeu était construit sur un château de cartes, où chaque limite non vérifiée est une catastrophe qui attend son heure.
Bref, vous l’aurez compris, cette expérience c’est bien plus qu’un simple “j’ai fait tourner DOOM pendant longtemps lol”. C’est une démonstration de la prédictibilité des systèmes informatiques. Ça montre que quand on comprend vraiment comment un programme fonctionne, on peut littéralement voir dans l’avenir…

. Le dernier rescapé, Real Soccer 2009, a même rejoint récemment cette arche de Noé numérique après des mois d’efforts acharnés.
L’histoire commence en réalité il y a près de deux décennies. En 2006, Apple lance les premiers jeux pour iPod via l’iTunes Store. 9 titres débarquent d’abord : Bejeweled, Cubis 2, Mahjong, Mini Golf, Pac-Man, Tetris, Texas Hold ‘Em, Vortex et Zuma.
Mais voilà le drame. Apple stoppe la vente de l’iPod équipé de cette molette en 2011, supprimant les jeux de l’iTunes Store. Les propriétaires ne peuvent plus re-télécharger leurs achats et pire encore, le système DRM Fairplay d’Apple lie chaque jeu à la fois au compte iTunes ET à l’ordinateur qui l’a téléchargé. Un double verrouillage insurmontable et à 4,99 $ pièce, ça représente quand même 270 $ pour la collection complète des jeux. Les boules.
Mais c’est là qu’intervient Olsro, développeur français à qui la communauté des fans d’iPod doit cette prouesse. Avec l’aide de Quix, un autre passionné, ils découvrent une faille dans le système de protection d’Apple. Ainsi en créant une machine virtuelle QEMU, ils parviennent à autoriser et synchroniser les jeux sur n’importe quel iPod compatible.
La VM stocke alors les clés de déchiffrement et peut fonctionner entièrement hors ligne et cela garantit que les jeux resteront accessibles “pour l’éternité”, même si Apple décide de fermer définitivement ses serveurs d’authentification.
La quête du dernier jeu, Real Soccer 2009, a même tourné au cauchemar technique. Disques durs défaillants, corruption de données, échecs répétés mais la persévérance a payé et le saint Graal a finalement rejoint la collection.
Ce projet de préservation des jeux **iPod **fonctionne avec les iPod Nano 3G à 5G et les iPod Classic 5G à 7G, ce qui couvre l’essentiel du parc iPod capable de faire tourner ces jeux.
Mais au-delà de l’exploit technique, cette initiative soulève encore une fois la question de la propriété numérique. Combien de logiciels, de jeux, d’œuvres numériques disparaissent chaque année faute de préservation ?? Ces 54 titres iPod représentent pour les historiens du jeu vidéo un moment charnière dans l’histoire du divertissement portable, juste avant l’avènement de l’écosystème iPhone.

Like the original StandbyME, the StandbyME 2 comes mounted on a wheeled docking stand for easy mobility.
