Apple’s Liquid Glass Eliminates Interface Chaos Without Clean Design Compromise

Apple’s new Liquid Glass design language refracts light, adapts to context, and, for the first time, makes iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, TV, and Vision Pro feel like one family instead of six separate worlds. Today’s announcement of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26 finally addresses the fundamental interface problem that overwhelms users when every app competes for attention simultaneously.

Designer: Apple

Liquid Glass Design Philosophy Transforms How Interfaces Feel

For the first time, Apple has coordinated visual changes across all six platforms simultaneously while preserving what makes each operating system unique. This unified approach eliminates the jarring disconnection between devices that forces users to mentally readjust interfaces constantly.

Liquid Glass works as a translucent material inspired by visionOS that uses real-time specular highlights for depth and reflections while dynamically transforming to prioritize content over interface chrome. The system affects controls, navigation, app icons, widgets, and typography, not just window decoration.

Adaptive numerals shift based on context. Tab bars and sidebars resize intelligently as users scroll. Lock screen text adapts to underlying imagery for optimal readability. When reading articles, controls fade gracefully. During video editing, timeline tools become prominent while other elements recede naturally.

The philosophy demonstrates sophisticated restraint, recognizing that people switch between iPhone, iPad, and Mac throughout their workday constantly. Visual consistency reduces cognitive friction while platform-specific optimizations preserve each device’s core strengths.

However, this beauty comes with trade-offs. The GPU-intensive rendering means older hardware shows simplified effects. More critically, transparency looks gorgeous indoors but reduces contrast in direct sunlight. On iPhone 17 Pro, the translucency feels alive, though outdoors contrast sometimes slips, a fundamental tension between aesthetic appeal and practical usability that runs throughout Apple’s implementation.

Apple Intelligence Live Translation in iOS 26 Tackles Communication Barriers

International conference calls and travel create genuine language barriers that slow down professional work. Apple Intelligence introduces Live Translation across Messages, FaceTime, Phone calls, and AirPods without the awkward delays that plague existing translation tools.

The implementation supports English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean in beta, with additional language support rolling out throughout 2025. Visual intelligence gains ChatGPT integration for screenshot analysis plus search connections to Google, Etsy, and other supported applications for finding similar images and products.

Genmoji creation lets users combine multiple emoji for more precise expression than settling for approximate matches. Workout Buddy brings personalized spoken motivation to Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods during exercise sessions using generative voices built from Apple Fitness+ trainer data.

Developer Integration Expands Intelligence Ecosystem

New developer APIs let third-party apps integrate directly with on-device Apple Intelligence models. Apps like Streaks now intelligently suggest and categorize to-do items, while CARROT Weather provides unlimited conversational weather insights. Detail: AI Video Editor helps creatives by generating teleprompter scripts from outlines or existing text.

The on-device foundation model enables privacy-protected features that work offline, positioning Apple Intelligence as enhancement rather than replacement for human capabilities.

Liquid Glass in iOS 26 Eliminates Daily Phone Frustrations

Robocalls and customer service holds remain unnecessarily stressful despite decades of smartphone evolution. Call Screening automatically handles unknown numbers while Hold Assist waits on line until live agents become available, finally automating the tedious aspects of phone communication.

Lock Screen customization includes adaptive time presentation that adjusts to imagery and delightful 3D spatial scenes that respond to lighting conditions and usage patterns. The adaptive design ensures readability across different wallpapers and times of day.

Enhanced Communication and Media Features

Messages gains screening for unknown senders, poll creation, and conversation backgrounds. Apple Music adds Lyrics Translation and Pronunciation features for select songs across multiple language pairs. Apple Maps introduces Visited Places tracking while Apple Wallet expands order tracking capabilities in beta.

The new Apple Games app creates a personalized gaming destination for discovering and reconnecting with favorite titles. CarPlay users get a compact view for incoming calls, Tapbacks in Messages, plus widgets and Live Activities.

AirPods receive significant updates allowing creators to record high-quality content and remotely control Camera app capture, bridging professional and consumer workflows.

iPadOS 26 Desktop-Class Windowing Maintains Touch Simplicity

Professional iPad users have complained about windowing limitations for years without adequate solutions. iPadOS 26 introduces an entirely new windowing system that organizes and switches between apps while maintaining iPad’s signature simplicity, the biggest iPadOS release ever.

Multiple windows cooperate intelligently without the chaos that plagues traditional desktop environments. A new menu bar appears with a swipe down from the top or cursor movement to the edge, bridging touch and cursor interfaces elegantly without compromising either interaction method.

Home and lock screen widgets plus app icons gain a new “clear look” that integrates seamlessly with Liquid Glass principles. The aesthetic maintains visual hierarchy while reducing interface noise.

Professional Workflow Enhancements

The supercharged Files app offers new organization capabilities and folder customization. Dock folders provide convenient access to downloads and documents from anywhere. The Preview app arrives on iPad with Apple Pencil Markup and AutoFill integration, making document workflows seamless instead of requiring third-party workarounds.

Journal comes to iPad for capturing everyday moments and special events using Apple Pencil or touch. Creative professionals gain Background Tasks, enhanced audio input control, and high-quality local recording capabilities that bring iPad closer to desktop-class content creation.

On iPad M4, the new windowing system finally feels intuitive, but older models show lag when managing multiple windows simultaneously. It shows Apple’s design ambition outpacing its hardware support, a reminder that innovation always moves faster than compatibility.

macOS Tahoe Transparent Menu Bar Transforms Desktop Experience

Desktop search hasn’t fundamentally changed since the 1990s despite massive computing power increases. macOS Tahoe delivers Spotlight’s biggest update ever with new browsing views, enhanced search, and action capabilities for sending emails or creating events through quick keys.

Search transforms from file finding into a command center for everything. Shortcuts integrate with Apple Intelligence models for complex task automation. The updated Control Center offers new personalization options alongside extensive customization choices.

Visual Customization Meets Functional Design

Folder icons can be customized with color, symbols, or emoji. Wallpapers and tints interact directly with Liquid Glass elements, creating cohesive visual experiences that adapt to user preferences. The menu bar becomes completely transparent, expanding visual space without hardware changes.

Live Activities from iPhone now appear directly on Mac for real-time event tracking. Continuity brings iPhone Phone app features including Recents, Favorites, Voicemails, Call Screening, and Hold Assist directly to Mac, dissolving device boundaries.

On MacBook, the transparent menu bar is elegant at night but chaotic against a messy desktop, another example of the aesthetic versus practicality tension running throughout Liquid Glass implementation.

watchOS 26 Predictive Health Monitoring Gains FDA Validation

Fitness tracking has focused on reactive data collection rather than proactive health insights. Apple Watch gains a sleep score feature for understanding sleep quality and taking steps toward more restorative rest.

FDA-cleared hypertension notifications represent a significant medical advancement, alerting users when signs of chronic high blood pressure are detected so they can begin potentially lifesaving behavioral changes or treatment. The feature uses machine learning algorithms validated in large clinical studies but remains limited to Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later.

Enhanced Interaction and Productivity

watchOS 26 introduces two new watch faces: Flow and Exactograph. Smart Stack hints offer proactive prompts for actionable suggestions that appear when most relevant. Live Translation in Messages automatically translates texts into preferred languages.

A new wrist flick gesture dismisses notifications, silences alarms, and returns to the watch face on Series 9 and later models. On Apple Watch, wrist flick works instantly, while hypertension alerts inspire trust but raise accuracy questions. It positions Apple as both a lifestyle brand and a quasi-medical provider, which raises trust and liability questions. The Notes app finally arrives on Apple Watch, completing the productivity suite across Apple’s ecosystem.

Workout Buddy provides personalized, motivational audio insights during workouts with dynamic generative voices, while the Workout app debuts its biggest layout update since introduction.

Apple TV Social Features Transform Living Room Entertainment

Apple TV has lacked genuine social capabilities despite being shared household devices. Sing-along sessions reach new levels through Sing in Apple Music, transforming iPhones into wireless microphones for Apple TV with friends joining to queue songs or react with onscreen emoji.

Real-time lyrics and visual effects bring performances to life on the biggest screen in the home, making group entertainment interactive instead of passive consumption. Contact Posters on FaceTime simplify video calling from the living room while profile updates allow users to quickly return to personalized recommendations, playlists, and watchlists.

Vision Pro Persistent Spatial Computing Enables Collaboration

visionOS 26 brings powerful spatial experiences including widgets that integrate seamlessly into users’ spaces and persist across sessions instead of resetting each time. More expressive, realistic Personas and spatial scenes offer lifelike depth for photos.

Spatial browsing transforms Safari articles and lets developers embed 3D objects directly into web pages. Users can share Vision Pro experiences with people in the same room for collaborative movie watching or work sessions. iPhone unlocking while wearing Vision Pro plus hand and eye data saving makes sharing easier than ever.

A new interactive Jupiter environment lets users accelerate time to observe the planet’s massive storms swirling across its surface. Native playback support arrives for 180-degree, 360-degree, and wide field-of-view content from action cameras including Insta360, GoPro, and Canon models.

Comprehensive Accessibility Features Expand User Access

New accessibility features bring comprehensive customization to the Apple ecosystem. Accessibility Nutrition Labels on the App Store inform users of supported accessibility features before downloading apps, improving discoverability for users with disabilities.

The Magnifier app for Mac connects to external cameras for users with low vision to zoom in and interact with surroundings. Accessibility Reader offers systemwide reading mode with extensive font, color, and spacing options plus Spoken Content support.

Braille Access provides powerful interaction methods for braille users with connected displays. Live Listen controls come to Apple Watch with real-time Live Captions for users who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring the design revolution includes comprehensive user access.

Historical Context Reveals Design Evolution Strategy

Liquid Glass represents Apple’s most significant design evolution since the iOS 7 transformation from skeuomorphic to flat design in 2013. This latest pivot toward adaptive translucency aims to solve the interface chaos created by decades of feature accumulation across multiple platforms.

The simultaneous rollout across six platforms signals Apple’s confidence in unified design language while acknowledging the performance and usability trade-offs. GPU-intensive rendering limits older devices to simplified effects, and contrast issues in bright environments reveal the ongoing tension between beauty and functionality.

All updates are available today as free software downloads. Apple Intelligence launches in beta with expanding language support throughout 2025. Some features remain region-limited, particularly hypertension notifications which require specific hardware and regulatory approval.

This coordinated approach demonstrates how thoughtful design philosophy can unify technical capabilities across an entire ecosystem while maintaining each platform’s unique identity, a balance that will define Apple’s interface evolution for years to come.

The iPhone Air is NOT a precursor to Apple Glasses… Here’s why

I recently read a Digital Trends piece that spoke about how the ‘iPhone Air is setting us up for Apple Smart Glasses‘, and I couldn’t help but think about how journalists who look at the iPhone Air have one of two reactions. There’s one group of bloggers who believe this particular launch is just a stepping stone to a foldable phone… while the other group, marveling at how all the computing of the iPhone Air exists inside the bump, believe that this is actually leading to Apple building smart glasses. The latter are wrong, but before I tell you my spicy take, let me just preface by declaring that Apple almost certainly could be working on both foldables as well as smart glasses. I just don’t think the iPhone Air is leading to Apple Glasses – because there’s already a device that’s been leading to it. The Watch.

Something about Apple launching a new product really makes journalists lose all sense of objectivity. I’m not being rude, I’m saying this because I’ve found myself doing this too. I was genuinely excited when Apple unveiled the Touch Bar, the Dynamic Island, and Camera Control. It felt ground-breaking for precisely 4 minutes before I then reminded myself… the Touch Bar was first put on a Lenovo laptop 2 years before apple, the Dynamic Island is still larger than most hole-punch cameras, and the Camera Control, while great, doesn’t beat the innovation that Sony’s had in their ‘camera phone’ era. I’m not dunking on Apple, but hear me out – it’s impressive how Apple managed to fit an entire smartphone into the iPhone Air’s camera bump, but Apple’s done this before – the Apple Watch is essentially a computer crammed into a wristwatch. Saying the iPhone Air is building up to smart glasses means completely ignoring all of Apple’s work in the Watch category.

Will the iPhone Air’s innovations lead to wearable breakthroughs? Absolutely. The watch’s heart rate monitor led to breakthroughs in heart-tracking tech that made it to the AirPods Pro 3. The Center Stage camera on the Mac made it to the iPhone. Innovation always travels in multiple directions. But nobody looked at the heart rate monitor on the Apple Watch and thought, wow, this is definitely going to go into my ear someday.

The point is, Apple’s been on track for making powerful wearable devices. The Watch is essentially a computer that’s only limited by its chipset and OS. Bump the S-series chipset’s capabilities to match the A-series and the smartwatch essentially becomes a powerful computing device. It’s already got a gyroscope, it has a battery, tracks health, is ridiculously water-resistant, and could easily pack a camera if you remove the entire sensor array on the bottom for calculating blood oxygen, wrist temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate variability.

So what’s the iPhone Air hinting at? To be honest, I think the most logical conclusion is a foldable. Apple’s built the iPhone Air to be ridiculously strong, thin, and capable of matching up to the performance of regular flagships. The iPhone Air’s thin design still has a massive battery, which obviously doesn’t port to a pair of smart glasses. Digital Trends asks this exact same question, wondering if Apple’s glasses will have a tethered battery pack like the Vision Pro. But then again, this is exactly what I find so amusing – journalists forgetting that Apple’s been making powerful computing devices with tiny batteries. All you need to do is look at your wrist!

Don’t blindly trust Apple’s build quality… this durable iPhone 17 Pro case has 20-foot drop protection

Remember bendgate? That infamous moment when the iPhone 6 Plus buckled under pressure, quite literally bending in people’s pockets and sparking a global conversation about smartphone durability. Apple learned from that debacle, but SUPCASE has taken the lesson to an entirely different level with their new UB Grip Pro case for the iPhone 17 Pro series. SUPCASE has essentially built a fortress around Apple’s latest flagship, complete with military-grade protection that makes the original bendgate controversy look like a gentle warm-up exercise. This case doesn’t just protect your phone; it turns it into an indestructible communication device that belongs in a superhero’s arsenal.

The UB Grip Pro represents SUPCASE’s evolution from their legendary Unicorn Beetle Pro series, trading the aggressive angular ridges for what they call “structural elegance.” The company has managed to create something that looks like it rolled off the assembly line of a high-end military contractor, complete with precision-milled aluminum components and a design language that screams industrial sophistication. The case wraps around the iPhone 17 Pro’s new aluminum-glass hybrid back and that distinctive horizontal camera bar with the kind of protection typically reserved for equipment heading into combat zones. SUPCASE claims 20-foot drop protection, which means your phone could theoretically survive falling from a second-story window and still boot up ready for your next video call. The four-corner airbag design distributes impact forces like a professional stunt coordinator, ensuring that even the most dramatic accidents become mere footnotes in your phone’s survival story.

The integrated kickstand is rated to survive over 55,000 open-close cycles as per SUPCASE’s testing. SUPCASE built this component from aluminum alloy, giving it the kind of durability you’d expect from your own MacBook’s hinge rather than a some nondescript smartphone accessory online. The kickstand offers 120-degree portrait positioning and 57-degree landscape angles, perfect for taking advantage of the iPhone 17 Pro’s enhanced dual video recording capabilities. The ring grip function doubles as a security feature, essentially making it impossible to drop your phone during those one-handed photography sessions. When folded flat, the kickstand disappears into the case’s contours like a hidden weapon in a spy thriller, maintaining that sleek profile while keeping serious functionality at your fingertips.

SUPCASE’s approach to MagSafe compatibility reads like something from a physics textbook. They’ve incorporated N52 magnets that generate seven times the magnetic force of standard cases, creating a hold strength of up to 1,800 grams. This means your iPhone will stick to magnetic car mounts with the tenacity of a gecko on glass, even during the bumpiest off-road adventures. The magnetic array ensures perfect alignment with MagSafe chargers, delivering the full 25W wireless charging speed without any of the positioning guesswork that plagues weaker magnetic cases. The magnets are strategically positioned to work seamlessly with the relocated Apple logo on the iPhone 17 Pro’s back panel, creating a perfectly centered aesthetic when using clear MagSafe accessories.

The camera zone usually wears the bruises, and the iPhone 17 Pro’s camera bar asks for dedicated protection. Reinforced impact zones wrap the rectangular module without turning it into a brick, a detail that matters in pockets and bags. Raised borders create clearance on tables while avoiding the harsh lip that snags on fabrics. Materials around this area feel denser and more resilient, which echoes the protective story without adding theatrical thickness. Photography stays comfortable to grip, especially when the ring is tucked and the case’s side texture takes over.

The Camera Control button features 19 copper conductors that deliver ultra-responsive feedback, making every shutter press feel as crisp and immediate as the bare phone. This level of precision engineering typically appears in professional camera equipment, not smartphone cases. The case’s textured surfaces provide grip security without sacrificing the premium feel that iPhone users expect. SUPCASE has managed to create a surface that feels substantial and secure in your hand while maintaining the kind of finish quality that wouldn’t look out of place in a luxury car interior.

The included 9H tempered glass screen protector completes the 360-degree protection package, turning your iPhone 17 Pro into a virtually indestructible communication device. Unlike many case manufacturers who treat screen protection as an afterthought or expensive add-on, SUPCASE includes premium glass protection right in the box. The 0.33mm thickness maintains touch sensitivity while providing hardness levels that rival sapphire crystal. The installation process integrates seamlessly with the case design, creating a unified protection system rather than a collection of separate accessories. This comprehensive approach means your iPhone receives laboratory-grade protection from the moment you unbox the case.

The UB Grip Pro comes in four colorways that complement the iPhone 17 Pro’s new finish options: classic black for stealth operations, Guldan for those who prefer darker sophistication, coral that matches the phone’s rumored new color options, and azure that adds a pop of personality to the industrial design. Each color maintains the same premium finish quality and attention to detail that makes this case feel like a custom piece of tactical equipment. SUPCASE has priced the UB Grip Pro competitively for what amounts to comprehensive protection that could save you from a costly device replacement. Available through SUPCASE’s official store and Amazon, this case promises to add armor-like properties to your phone, making it so strong even Hulk wouldn’t be able to bend it… probably.

Users no longer need to choose between affordability and display quality.

Ceramic Shield 2 advances smartphone durability science

The new Ceramic Shield 2 front cover is tougher than any smartphone glass or glass-ceramic, with 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation and reduced glare. For the first time, Ceramic Shield protects the back of Pro devices, delivering 4x better resistance to cracks than previous back glass.

This creates complete protection against drops and scratches. Users can feel confident using phones without bulky cases. Repair costs decrease significantly over the device lifetime.

Apple pushed material science boundaries to achieve these improvements. The technology makes phones more reliable and longer-lasting for everyday use.

Apple Watch gains hypertension monitoring capabilities

Apple introduced Apple Watch Series 11, offering the most comprehensive set of health features yet, longer battery life, an even more durable cover glass, and 5G cellular capabilities. Apple Watch Series 11 empowers users with notifications for signs of chronic high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

Healthcare becomes proactive rather than reactive with this technology. Users receive early warnings about potential heart problems. Apple Watch positions itself as essential medical equipment.

FDA clearance for hypertension notifications is expected soon, and the feature will be available in more than 150 countries and regions this month. The feature could prevent heart attacks and strokes through early detection.

Sleep Score feature transforms rest quality understanding

With watchOS 26, Apple Watch can help users understand the quality of their sleep and how to make it more restorative with a new sleep score feature. Sleep is fundamental to a person’s health and critical to daily restoration.

The system analyzes multiple factors including heart rate and temperature. Users get actionable insights for improving sleep quality. The scoring system makes complex sleep data understandable for everyone.

This transforms how people think about rest and recovery. Sleep becomes measurable and improvable rather than mysterious.

AirPods Pro 3 delivers world-class noise cancellation

AirPods Pro 3 deliver unbelievable sound quality and the world’s best in-ear Active Noise Cancellation. They remove up to 2x more noise than the previous-generation AirPods Pro, and 4x more than the original AirPods Pro. This advancement eliminates more environmental distractions than ever before.

The updated design helps AirPods Pro 3 fit even better and provides greater in-ear stability during activities like running, HIIT, yoga, and more. Comfort improves alongside acoustic performance. Active users can trust the earbuds to stay secure during intense movement.

TORRAS Ostand Case Adds a Magnetic Twist Apple Didn’t Think Of

A good case protects your phone, a better case protects your phone without compromise, and a great case gives it extra features. I’ve seen phone cases that get away with doing the bare minimum. The TORRAS Ostand OFitness case isn’t one of those accessories. Aside from protecting your iPhone against impact, making it feel more ergonomic with rounded edges, retaining its MagSafe and wireless charging abilities, as well as enabling its Camera Control feature, the Ostand OFitness also packs a slim, popout ring that rotates a full 360° to let you prop your phone up without needing an external stand.

We saw the Ostand OFitness and the Ostand OAir at TORRAS’ booth at CES 2025, and the thing with any good company is that it iterates on its best-selling product – the Ostand range. The new Ostand OFitness is more durable and more ergonomic than before – but there’s more. The stand also allows your iPhone to wirelessly charge 30% faster than previous versions, and the MagSafe gets a boost thanks to hidden magnets that reinforce the feature for better accessory attachment. The Ostand OAir has the same features too, except with enhanced AirMax cushioning around the corners that feel like a puffer jacket for your phone. Neat, no?

Designer: TORRAS

Make a product good enough and chances are it’ll get ripped off almost immediately. However, I’m yet to see a ripoff of the Ostand series of cases from TORRAS. The reason being (and I saw this first-hand in 2024), they’re over-engineered to the point of being impossible to replicate without pouring millions into R&D. That O-shaped stand (which is where the series gets its name from), is a technical marvel, with space-grade metallic components small enough for the eye to barely see, magnets so slim they’re almost paper thin – but also incredibly powerful, and a hinge that’s ridiculously sleek, bringing laptop-hinge-level friction into something that’s just a couple millimeters thick.

The Ostand OFitness builds on that stellar R&D with a case that’s somehow even better than before. It comes in five pastel shades that are equal parts subtle yet eye-catching, with a frosted transparent plastic back that’s fingerprint and smudge-proof, and a TPU bumper with built-in Airstrip Airbags that provide extra protection to your phone from drops and bumps. Meanwhile, the outside of the bumper is lined with textural dots that enhance your grip, giving those airbags a run for their money because you’ll probably never accidentally drop your phone. Meanwhile, the camera bump gets its own 1.5mm protective lip to absorb any impact so your phone’s precious lens system remains unscathed.

The star of the show, however, is that O-shaped ring that sits absolutely flush into the case-back. It isn’t like those snap-on rings or pop-sockets that protrude from the back of your phone, absolutely ruining the aesthetic. You barely know it’s there when it’s shut, but tuck your finger into the slight divet, and you can prop open the ring, which can then be used as a grip or a stand. The ring’s hinge is fairly stiff, so it holds its angle like the friction-hinge seen on laptops. This means you can prop your phone up at any angle, going from a mere 20° all the way up to 60°. The ring also rotates on its hub like a hubless wheel (thanks to that incredibly engineered design), allowing you to prop your phone in landscape or portrait.

Built into the ring are a series of magnets that allow the ring to snap shut securely, but they also serve to ‘boost’ your phone’s MagSafe powers. Most cases can sometimes interfere with your iPhone’s MagSafe magnetic array, but with the right boost, the Ostand OFitness actually ‘increases’ the MagSafe power, allowing accessories to snap on way more securely. Meanwhile, all the buttons remain accessible through individual button bumps, although the Camera Control area gets a cutout, allowing your finger to intuitively sit in the groove and control the camera features using the phone’s capacitive touch surface.

Meanwhile, the Ostand OAir has a slightly more unique design thanks to those exaggerated bumpers on the top and bottom, providing an extra layer of edge-protection along with the same features as the Ostand OFitness. Sometimes a case is more than just a protective cover and functional tool for people, it’s also a style statement – that’s where the Ostand OAir comes in, quite literally making your phone look like it’s wearing a classy puffer jacket!

That said, the cases aren’t for a specific demographic. They’re quite literally for everybody because they enhance the iPhone’s usability. The O-ring can be used for functionality or fidget, making it perfect for content creators, consumers, or anyone in between. And hey, don’t worry about these cases turning yellow with time – TORRAS stands behind its cases and has been doing so for the past 16 years. If they can engineer a magnetic ring with a 360° swiveling design, they can ensure their products don’t yellow or patina with time!

iPhone SE 4 Leaked Photos show Single-Lens Camera, USB-C Port, Mute Switch, and No Capture Button

Apple’s next budget-friendly smartphone is almost here, and it’s not playing by the old rules. The iPhone SE 4, or what might be called the iPhone 16e, seems ready to shake things up in early 2025. Rumors of a March launch are floating around the interwebs, although there’s no official date in mind (given that Apple hasn’t made any announcements for upcoming keynotes yet). That being said, the iPhone SE 4 is long overdue, given that its predecessor launched in 2022.

A tipster on X shared images of a dummy phone given to case-makers and accessory manufacturers. Touted to be the upcoming iPhone SE 4, the phone gives us a pretty concise idea of what we can expect with Apple’s latest budget-friendly iPhone. Gone are the thick bezels and that physical home button. Instead, you get a 6.1-inch edge-to-edge display that takes cues from the iPhone 14. The shift feels long overdue, but it’s a welcome change. Apple has clearly decided that even its “budget” options shouldn’t look outdated. Whether the device will stick with a notch or adopt the Dynamic Island remains a mystery, but the overall design promises to feel more current than before.

Image via X (@SonnyDickson)

From the rumors circling the internet, it’s not just the look that’s leveling up. The screen technology is taking a leap forward too. Moving from an LCD to OLED is a serious win for anyone upgrading from an older SE. Expect richer colors, better contrast, and improved efficiency. It’s the kind of difference you notice right away—deeper blacks and visuals that just feel more polished. For a phone in this price range, that’s not something you’d usually expect.

And then there’s the long-overdue shift to USB-C. If you’ve been juggling different cables for different devices, this change simplifies things. Even though the port may only support USB 2.0 speeds, the move feels like a step in the right direction. Other visual changes on the phone’s frame include the lack of an action button (we’re back to the old mute switch days), and clearly no Camera Control ‘button’ like Apple announced with the 16 series. The SE 3 didn’t have MagSafe so one could argue the SE 4 might miss it too, although wireless capabilities and MagSafe are really becoming a dominant feature in phones of this supposed price range.

Speaking of upgrades, the camera is getting a major refresh. A 48MP sensor allegedly replaces the old 12MP one, bringing a noticeable bump in photo quality. Whether it’s snapping shots at night or recording 4K video, the iPhone SE 4 will give you more to work with. Apple hasn’t confirmed much about zoom capabilities, but the upgrade alone should satisfy both casual users and anyone who takes their mobile photography seriously. Don’t expect dual-lens camera setups on the SE anytime soon – but even with one lens, the iPhone SE 4 should definitely get the job done.

Under the hood, the SE 4 is rumored to feature Apple’s A18 chip paired with 8GB of RAM. What does that mean for the user? Faster performance, smoother multitasking, and the kind of speed that keeps your phone future-proof for a while. Apple’s massive push towards Apple Intelligence probably means this phone will come with the highly awaited AI assistant. That’s sort of why Apple decided to give the SE 4 the same chip as the iPhone 16 series. More on this when the phone officially launches.

Curiously, Apple might be rethinking how it positions this phone. The potential rebranding as the iPhone 16e hints at a shift in strategy. Instead of standing out as the “cheap iPhone,” it could become a core part of the lineup—offering flagship features with just a few compromises. That name change, subtle as it seems, could reshape how people perceive the device.

Price-wise, the SE 4 is expected to start at $499. Sure, it’s a bump up from its predecessor, but considering the OLED display, the camera upgrades, and the more powerful chip, it feels justified. You’re getting more for your money, and that’s the bottom line. Regional pricing might vary, but overall, it’s still positioned to attract users who want Apple’s ecosystem without the premium price tag.

This Retro iPhone Case turns it into a Makeshift Old Windows PC with Clippy and Internet Explorer

Quite literally the opposite of Back to the Future, this iPhone 16 Pro case is more like “Forward to the Past”.

When you buy a phone, chances are you spring for a case immediately for one of two reasons – to either protect your phone, or to personalize it. However, Printables user Retron Print may have invented a new reason to add a case to your phone. Meet the iPhone Retro Case – a case that takes your cutting-edge smartphone and transforms it into a marvel of old-school technology. The two-part case sandwiches your phone in between, turning it into an old-timey CRT monitor (albeit with a functional main camera and dynamic island). To complement the case’s old-school design, Retron Print also equipped the phone with a retro home screen and custom icons and widgets. Although I’d personally love to have the iPhone stick to a Macintosh-based system, this one is unabashedly Windows, with a non-functional Clippy icon on the screen. Quite a downgrade from Siri and Apple Intelligence, no?

Designer: Retron Print

The beauty of the case is that it justifies every aspect of its retro design without compromise. Look at monitors from times of yore and they often had thick, chunky bezels. While most monitors came with a ‘chin’ which would either house a floppy disk reader or just control buttons, this retro case shifts the asymmetric chin to the side, with front-facing buttons that actually work. Built cleverly into the case’s mechanism are buttons that face forwards, but trigger the action and volume buttons on the side of the iPhone. The detailing’s prebuilt into the case’s design, and all you need to really do is 3D print and then assemble.

On the front, the case features an oval frame reminiscent of old CRT monitors, although it doesn’t obstruct the screen in any way. It’s a small but meaningful detail that gives the case a distinctly vintage vibe. Around the back, long, deep grooves evoke the look of classic desktop computers and also provide better grip. These thoughtful design elements ensure that while the case embraces nostalgia, it still offers the user a modern experience with improved functionality and tactile appeal. Meanwhile, speaker systems are accounted for too, with slots on the top and bottom that let you listen to audio from your iPhone.

When it comes to color options, Retron Print suggests using filament in shades like sandy beige, gray, or light brown to fully capture the retro essence. These muted tones are reminiscent of the classic electronics from decades past, enhancing the nostalgic appeal. This attention to detail extends to the print process itself. The case’s front and back panels are best printed on a textured print plate, adding an extra dimension to the overall look and feel, while the buttons should be printed on a smooth plate to maintain their tactile nature.

For those eager to bring a bit of retro flair to their iPhone, the case is available for iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 models. You can purchase the STL files for just $10 on Printables.com and print the case yourself, although this just includes the retro case’s 3D files and not the wallpaper and app icons. When it comes to color options, Retron Print suggests using filament in shades like sandy beige, gray, or light brown to fully capture the retro essence. These muted tones are reminiscent of the classic electronics from decades past, enhancing the nostalgic appeal.

However, commercial use of this model is restricted. To sell prints of this design, users must become a member of the Retron Print Commercial Club, ensuring that the creator, AndrzejG, receives credit and support for their work. This stipulation ensures that while the model is available for personal use, it remains protected against unauthorized distribution.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

ESR's newest range of Classic Hybrid Cases with Stash Stand gives the iPhone 16 the protection it deserves with no compromise to functionality nor a hit on its innate beauty.

The new iPhone 16 series is here, along with a new generation of accessories designed to complement Apple’s latest and greatest smartphone. While the iPhone has changed considerably over the years, what hasn’t really changed is its price tag, making it quite an expensive investment that people want to protect and keep for as long as possible. There is no shortage of cases that promise that, but many of these cover up the iPhone’s minimalist beauty with gaudy designs and fatten up the otherwise slim profile in the name of rugged durability. Other cases also add some functionality that complicates the iPhone’s appearance and use, going against the spirit of simplicity that Apple embraces. It’s rare to come across a phone case that offers protection that doesn’t obscure the original design or adds utility that doesn’t compromise other features. The new ESR iPhone 16 Classic Hybrid Case with Stash Stand and its siblings promise exactly that and we put them in our hands to see how well that promise holds.

Designer: ESR

Click Here to Buy Now: $19.99

Aesthetics

One of the biggest reasons why some people are hesitant to slap a protective case on their phones is that these cases tend to make the phones look ugly and bulky. Of course, there are people who actually prefer to dress up their phones with stickers and decals, but the large majority want to show off their new phone’s pristine beauty, especially if that phone is an iPhone. That Apple logo on the back is, of course, a matter of pride for owners so it feels counterintuitive to cover that up with a thick and opaque case.

There’s a reason that ESR puts the “Classic” label on this series of cases for the new iPhone 16. Despite offering an impressive set of protective features, the transparent back still lets the original style and color of the iPhone 16 shine through, though you do have choices of colored edges to match the iPhone’s natural color as well. With a back that’s only 1.6mm thick, it doesn’t add that much bulk to the slim and sleek phone.

The ESR Classic Hybrid Case with Stash Stand embraces Apple’s minimalist design language, offering protection that you can’t see but definitely feel. It has no extraneous markings or branding that would mar the otherwise pristine beauty of the iPhone 16. It hugs the phone’s frame so tightly that it almost looks like a transparent skin wrapped around the phone. And the parts that you do see are also designed to be aesthetic, like the zinc alloy of the camera guard kickstand with a matte finish that just seamlessly blends with the camera bump’s design. ESR clearly had not just phone protection in mind but also user satisfaction in seeing the classic elegance of their iPhone 16 without worrying about accidents.

Ergonomics

Smartphone cases actually do double duty when it comes to protection. They buffer the force of impact when phones fall or bump into hard objects, but they also add some texture to the phone’s back to increase their grip. In other words, cases make it easier to hold the phone and reduce the risk of dropping it, and when you do drop it, the cases absorb some of the shock and protect the material underneath from scratches and dings.

Of course, that’s only true for cases that don’t increase the size and weight of the phone to the point of making it uncomfortable to hold or don’t use a material that’s even more slippery than the phone’s glass or metal rear. Fortunately, the ESR Classic Hybrid definitely checks the right boxes here as well, with an overall thickness of only 14.2mm and a weight of only 42g (1.7oz). The materials themselves also have a kind of “sticky” quality that prevents the phone from slipping off your hand easily. That stash stand also functions as a ring you can hang from your finger while your hands are carrying other things, almost like a built-in loop. It would have been nice if it could also function like a popsocket of sorts so you can hold the phone with even more confidence, but the current design doesn’t make that possible. That’s a puzzle that ESR will hopefully solve in future iterations of the Stash Stand.

Performance

A protective case is only as good as the protection it offers, and the ESR Classic Hybrid with Stash Stand for the iPhone 16 definitely has plenty of that to go around, almost literally. Almost every side of the case has a feature that ensures the safety of the phone no matter which side it drops on, including the 1.2mm raised edge around the screen and the 0.7mm raised camera guard. There’s also the acrylic-PC material used for the back of the case for enhanced durability and a TPU edge that is promised not to discolor and turn yellow over time.

One unique feature of ESR cases is its Air Guard corners, which are basically small empty pockets that serve as cushions for the most common part of the phone that hits the pavement. These look like very small bumps rather than obnoxious bumpers, staying true to the minimalist design language that the Classic Hybrid cases embrace. All of these give the cases military-grade protection, enough to meet the MIL-STD-810H standard for shock protection. The case can protect the phone from an 11-foot drop, offering iPhone 16 owners peace of mind without compromising their experience.

The “Stash Stand” part of the ESR Classic Hybrid’s name comes from the camera guard that flips down to transform into a multi-angle stand, supporting angles of anywhere between 15 to 85 degrees for your preferred viewing angle. Unlike other built-in phone stands like rings and popsockets, the stash stand gets out of the way when you don’t need it and even protects your cameras. The one disadvantage to this design is that you can’t prop up your phone vertically unless you lay it almost flat on a table, which is fine for scrolling through social media but not for video calls.

Apple’s introduction of MagSafe technology presented a design problem for case makers, especially those with rugged and thick materials. MagSafe won’t work through such cases, at least not without some clever designs and technologies. Fortunately, that’s no longer a problem today and, even better, ESR has found ways to actually improve on the technology. For one, it has even stronger magnets, about 1.5kg of magnetic locking force, so you don’t have to worry about the case making accessories loose and detach accidentally. It can even let the phone charge faster than with other MagSafe-compatible cases, beating its competitors by an average of 30 minutes. Best of all, the magnetic ring is embedded in the case itself, so it won’t scratch your iPhone’s back.

All in all, the ESR iPhone 16 Classic Hybrid Case with Stash Stand offers unparalleled, military-grade protection that doesn’t get in the way of your enjoyment of your phone. It retains the iPhone 16’s natural beauty while also giving you color options to match your phone and your style. It’s a no-compromise design that brings the best of all worlds while staying true to Apple’s own design philosophy.

Sustainability

Like many protective cases these days, the ESR Classic Hybrid is a mixture of different materials that each offer a different kind of protection. The acrylic-PC material on its back offers durability and scratch resistance, while the TPU around the edges gives flexibility and shock absorption. Unfortunately, these materials are also known to be non-sustainable, though there is definitely research and experiments on using alternative materials that produce the same durable properties.

That’s not to say, however, that ESR isn’t doing due diligence in creating a greener future, but its sustainability results are a little bit more indirect. For one, it offsets its carbon emissions through the ClimatePartner program. In addition, it helps keep phones away from trash bins and dump sites longer by protecting these precious devices and ensuring their longevity. You might not see a phone case as a “green” product, but ESR is definitely doing its part in healing the planet in its own small ways.

Value

Starting at only $19.99, the ESR Classic Hybrid Case with Stash Stand is pretty much a no-brainer for new iPhone 16 owners. After all, you are getting an impressive amount of protection against accidents and a built-in stand that stays out of the way and out of sight when you don’t need it. Plus, it retains the iPhone 16’s slim profile, sleek looks, and original style, allowing you to enjoy the natural colors you selected when you bought it. What’s not to love?

And for those who want something more or something different, they don’t have to stray far from ESR’s other new iPhone 16 cases. The Cloud Soft Case with Stash Stand, for example, has the same basic design but uses premium liquid silicone to give the phone a softer touch. The Cyber Tough Case with Stash Stand, on the other hand, levels up the durability with a 3-layer design that includes a robust PC backing, a flexible TPU shell, and an inner PORON lining. With these three designs, ESR has got all your iPhone 16 protection needs covered and in your preferred style.

Verdict

Just like with power banks, smartphone cases have become a fact of modern mobile life. No matter how durable companies make their phones, there will still be that nagging fear of throwing away money when, not if, you accidentally drop your precious investment. With the arrival of the iPhone 16, ESR took the opportunity to showcase the best of its design with the Classic Hybrid Case with Stash Stand. Offering military-grade protection that doesn’t make the iPhone 16 look like a tank, this case with a built-in stand is something you’ll have no reason to take off once you’ve put it on.

PITAKA Launches Their Latest iPhone 16 Cases: Slim, Light, Strong

Smartphones are getting more durable every generation, but there’s no escaping the fact that a single wrong fall could render it useless. Protective cases increase their chances of survival at the expense of hiding their beauty, and even those clear silicone ones can sometimes make otherwise luxurious phones look cheap. If you’re going to cover up your phone anyway, you might as well make a big splash by adopting a design that’s going to upgrade your device’s looks as well. For years, PITAKA has been pushing the envelope of phone cases by focusing on quality material that not only looks good but also feels great in your hand. With the new Apple iPhone 16 series, it is launching its next-generation woven cases to offer upgraded protection and welcome a new style that will be a feast for the eyes, even in the dark.

Designer: PITAKA

PITAKA x Aries x NoProblemo Collaboration: Light in the Darkness

A phone case’s beautiful design becomes meaningless if you can’t see in the dark. Not so this collection of luminous designs that cast an eerie glow after the lights go out, giving them an alien, artful, and rebellious character. It’s the perfect combination for a design made in partnership with trendy UK fashion brand Aries, delivering cases that delight the eyes and the hands any time of the day. It’s a refreshing new style that adds a bit of youthful vigor to an iPhone case that’s already brimming with life.

At the heart of this luminescent innovation is PITAKA’s Lumintex™, combined with the brand’s advanced Floating Weave technique. This pairing elevates the design potential of aramid fibers, offering users a richer and more dynamic visual experience. Unlike conventional methods that simply print or paint luminous patterns that fade over time, PITAKA’s approach intricately weaves luminous fibers into the case. Lumintex™ is an ultra-thin, flexible polymer fiber, modified at the molecular level for enhanced weavability and luminescence. After absorbing light, the case emits a soft green glow for up to 20 minutes, providing a high-grade, fashionable luminescence at class D brightness.

Like any other PITAKA case, the PITAKA x Aries X NoProblemo series is made from hi-tech aramid fibers that are also used in the aerospace and military industries, giving it unbeatable protection against scratches and corrosion without weighing the phone down. PITAKA’s proprietary Fusion Weaving technology interlaces multiple colored fibers on a single loom to create eye-catching patterns that your fingers will also be able to touch and appreciate. These PITAKA iPhone 16 cases bring long-lasting beauty that shows even in the dark.

PITAKA iPhone 16 Tactile Woven Cases: Skyward Bound

Many smartphone cases try to be beautiful and stylish but tend to go overboard and end up looking gaudy and over-the-top. Nothing wrong with that if that’s exactly what you’re after, but those who want striking yet subtle designs might want to turn their eyes toward PITAKA’s heavenly Tactile Woven cases instead. Durable and elegant at the same time, these cases bring a touch of the heavens to your phone in ways that your hand can feel as well.

Utilizing aramid fibers known in aerospace and military circles for their light yet strong properties, PITAKA’s Fusion Weaving technique creates sophisticated patterns of colors that tell a story more than just displaying art. The alternating lines of orange or blue, for example, try to depict the magic moments during Sunset and Moonrise, while the trail of yellow dots across a field of blue tries to paint the Milky Way on the back of your phone. Finally, the rocky split between dark and light azure hues depict that enchanting view of mountains disappearing Over the Horizon.

For the iPhone 16 series, PITAKA upgraded its design to offer additional protection, especially for one of the most important parts of smartphones today: the cameras. The new camera ring not only prevents scratching by raising the lenses away from surfaces, its new titanium color also helps reduce the exposure that could ruin those perfect and ephemeral shots. Beautiful and tactile, these woven cases give your iPhone 16 some character that will surely make it stand out from the crowd.

PITAKA Military-Grade Protective Cases: Rugged Beauty

If you want some extra peace of mind, then PITAKA’s line of tough cases delivers that added layer of durability your phone needs to survive those nasty accidents with very little additional weight. It integrates light yet durable aramid fibers with shockproof TPU material, offering protection from drops that pass even MIL-STD-810G tests. And it doesn’t stop there either.

The soft Nappa leather lining inside the case also helps cushion the back of the iPhone in case of unfortunate incidents, while metal button covers minimize abrasions and damage to these crucial buttons. The subtle screen lip mitigates the effects of dropping your phone face first on the ground, while the raised camera ring protects the camera lenses from scratches when you place the phone on rough surfaces.

Despite these added layers of protection, the PITAKA military-grade iPhone 16 cases remain slim, light, and most importantly, compatible with MagSafe chargers and accessories. In fact, the new iPhone 16 line of cases boasts a 0.1-0.2 kg increase in magnetic strength, allowing it to cling securely to any MagSafe-compatible surface. Plus, these military-grade cases are now also available in PITAKA’s signature Sunset and Moonrise designs, delivering not only protection but also style in a single package.

PITAKA Ultra-Slim Cases: Slim, Simple, Sublime

If your priority is keeping an already slim iPhone 16 as slim as it can be, then PITAKA’s selection of ultra-slim cases delivers that mixture of style and substance in a subtle design. Utilizing the brand’s MagSafe SlimBoard 2.0 technology, each case measures a mere 0.84 thick and weighs only 17.84g (0.63oz). Inside that thin body are 0.1mm thicker magnets that add 0.1kg more magnetic force, ensuring even better compatibility with MagSafe chargers, docks, wallets, and other accessories.

It doesn’t skimp on protection and beauty, however, using the same aramid fiber material and Fusion Weaving technique as any other PITAKA case, creating visual appeal and grip comfort at the same time. New to this iPhone 16 lineup are colors that add some life to your phone, adding Ocean Blue and Forest Green to the Black Grey colorway. The camera ring’s minimalist titanium color further adds to its elegance while offering additional protection as well as a reduction of exposure for that perfect shot.

Despite its slimmer build, the PITAKA Ultra-Slim cases still boast the same standard set of features, including exclusive NFC-driven experiences, like checking the authenticity of the case as well as access to games, music, wallpapers, and customer services. All of these are packed inside a box made from 100% biodegradable bagasse, a natural by-product of sugar cane processing, establishing PITAKA’s commitment to a greener tomorrow with every beautiful case sold. Stylish, strong, and sustainable, PITAKA’s Ultra-Slim iPhone 16 Cases has a design for every person, proving that phone protection doesn’t have to come at the cost of aesthetics, your bank account, or the health of the planet.
