Award-Winning Sports Complex boasts a Badminton Racquet-inspired Grid Roof with Solar Panels

In a stunning fusion of sport, sustainability, and striking design, MVRDV and Huayi Design have won the competition to create The Sweet Spot, a world-class sports complex in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district. Far from your average facility, this vibrant complex will house China’s National Badminton Training Centre, a public fitness hub, and a variety of commercial spaces. With an iconic rooftop shaped like the head of a badminton racket, The Sweet Spot is more than a nod to badminton, it’s a full-blown celebration of the sport and an architectural marvel in its own right.

The Sweet Spot makes a bold statement before you even set foot inside. Towering over the complex is a 240-meter-long roof that mirrors the head of a badminton racket, complete with a grid-like structure resembling racket strings. This isn’t just for show: the roof is equipped with solar panels, generating clean energy for the complex. It’s a masterstroke of design that combines sustainability with visual impact, a perfect reflection of MVRDV’s commitment to eco-friendly architecture.

Jacob van Rijs, founding partner at MVRDV, puts it best: “The Sweet Spot isn’t just about creating a space for sport, it’s about celebrating badminton in a way that’s fun, accessible, and environmentally conscious. We’re thrilled to have hit the winning shot with this design!”

At the heart of the complex is a dynamic space where athletes and the public seamlessly coexist. The main building, which houses a professional arena and training courts, is linked by a T-shaped promenade that invites everyone to explore the facilities. This promenade leads to a central plaza, aptly named the sweet spot, designed to reflect the perfect hitting point on a badminton racket. It’s a playful yet fitting metaphor for the spirit of the project.

For athletes, privacy is a priority. Beneath the public promenade lies a lower ground level that connects the training spaces and arena, allowing athletes to move discreetly without mingling with the public. It’s a clever solution that balances public engagement with the specialized needs of professional sportspeople.

But the badminton-themed surprises don’t stop there. To the south of the arena, a striking 23-story tower tapers like a shuttlecock, housing hotel rooms on the lower levels and short-stay apartments for athletes above. This iconic tower is more than just an architectural statement, it’s designed with athletes’ privacy and convenience in mind, offering direct access to the private lower ground floor.

On the other side of the complex, two smaller commercial buildings echo the racket shape of the main arena, tying the whole design together with visual harmony. These buildings will serve visitors, creating a lively and cohesive atmosphere.

The sweet spot isn’t just a haven for professional athletes, it’s a gift to the people of Shenzhen. The park surrounding the complex features courts for badminton, basketball, and football, open to everyone from casual players to serious competitors. The west side boasts a massive stepped tribune where spectators can watch matches or just take in the surroundings, making the park as much a social hub as a sports venue.

A separate National Fitness Centre offers even more opportunities for exercise, housing additional badminton and tennis courts as well as a swimming center. With so many options, it’s clear that this complex isn’t just about elite athletes, it’s designed to foster a love for sport across the entire community.

One of the most exciting aspects of The Sweet Spot is how it extends beyond its original scope. MVRDV saw potential in the space beneath the nearby Pingyan Expressway flyover, transforming what could have been a forgotten stretch of land into a vibrant green corridor. Complete with a skate park, basketball courts, a running track, and a playground, this extension seamlessly connects The Sweet Spot to the larger Pingshan community, making the complex an even more integral part of the city.

Finally, The Sweet Spot relies on clean energy to operate, pointing at a strong sustainability bid. The solar-powered roof generates much of the energy needed to run the complex, and the design as a whole prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. By integrating photovoltaic panels into the design of the badminton-racket-shaped roof, MVRDV has ensured that this isn’t just a sports complex of the present, it’s one being built for the future.

Meticulously-textured Moon Lamp Brings The Charm Of The Lunar Rock Into Your Home


We may not consciously notice but a lot of our time slips away as we mindlessly scroll through our phones, and the Phase lamp from a London-based studio Relative Distance offers a refreshing antidote to the distractions of modern life. Designed to mirror the moon’s real-time orbit around Earth, this ethereal piece of functional art creates a profound connection with our celestial neighbor.

Phase is no ordinary lamp. It’s the result of four years of meticulous design and engineering, capturing the moon’s timeless essence. From the moment the light crosses the glass, it reveals intricate details of the lunar landscape, offering a delicate and almost hypnotic experience. The lamp’s co-founder Roland Ellis notes that Phase allows us to “have a relationship with something that is a monumental part of our existence,” evoking a sense of calm and a deeper awareness of time and space.

The journey of creating Phase began with a stunning image released by NASA in 2014, which mosaics 15,000 wide-angle photographs of the moon’s surface. This image is meticulously applied to smoked glass, framed by a case made from a mineral composite, reminiscent of materials that could one day be used to build on the moon itself. The slim form and minimalist design of the lamp reflect Relative Distance’s philosophy of maximizing impact through a simple, almost magical object.

Phase’s interface is as simple as it is functional. Users can set the date, time, and brightness with just three buttons. However, Dajomi’s Daughters of Rain is not yet a product line; it remains a powerful commentary on the environmental challenges we face. Dajomi explained that while her hats are designed to function as rainwater harvesting tools, the primary purpose of her work is to provoke thought, raise awareness, and spark conversation about our relationship with water and the environment. San Francisco-based design studio Whipsaw has unveiled its latest innovation, the Aescape—a robotic massage system that merges artificial intelligence with cutting-edge robotics to offer a personalized and efficient massage experience. This groundbreaking product is set to redefine the future of massage therapy, addressing both the demands of users and the constraints faced by the massage industry.

The Aescape features metal arms with silicone-covered “hands” that mimic the feel and function of human hands, providing a realistic and soothing massage. The massage table is luxuriously wrapped in vegan faux leather, ensuring comfort and durability. Underneath the headrest lies a user-friendly display, allowing clients to tailor their massage sessions to their specific needs and preferences.

Aescape is engineered to deliver deep-tissue massages with unparalleled precision. The system’s metallic arms are securely attached to the massage table, while silicone pads on the “hands” replicate the natural contours of human hands, enhancing the authenticity of the massage. The innovative design is the brainchild of Aescape founder Eric Litman, who initially created a prototype before collaborating with Whipsaw to develop the final product.

In one of his interviews, Dan Harden, founder of Whipsaw, explained that they were challenged to integrate new technologies, define an all-new physical form factor, explore and create the essence of an Aescape brand through color, material, and finishes, and refine every single design detail. He noted that its appearance had to look very friendly and approachable, especially considering that robotic arms can be intimidating to some. Additionally, it also had to fit all types of user sizes, shapes, and ages.

To cater to diverse body types, the Aescape system uses suspended sensors to perform 3D scans of a user’s body before the massage begins. These sensors are discreetly placed inside light rings to minimize any discomfort or anxiety users might feel about being observed. The collected images and user data are processed through an AI-driven program, which is continuously updated with new data from each massage session. This ensures that every stroke and technique applied by the robot is informed by professional massage therapists and extensive robotic research. The users have a screen below their headrest to even customize their experience and get the most out of it.

The company emphasizes that every stroke the robot is commanded to do has been informed by licensed professional massage therapists, numerous prototype experiments, and years of robotic research. Aescape employs a formidable amount of AI and machine learning technology, enabling it to constantly improve and build its database, which informs its programming.

An Aescape representative mentioned that the machine is designed not to replace human masseuses but to supplement the industry by addressing the shortage of qualified massage therapists. It was stated that Aescape is much more efficient and sustainable than large groups of massage therapists, who often require significant health care due to workplace injuries. Additionally, using robotics reduces commuting-related environmental factors, such as vehicle pollution and energy usage.

The system’s efficiency allows users to enjoy a comprehensive massage in just 30 minutes, fitting seamlessly into busy schedules. With an on-demand booking app, users can easily find and book massage sessions ranging from 15 to 120 minutes, ensuring that personalized care is always within reach.

The journey to this innovative solution began with thorough research. The designer studied the textile and footwear industries, focusing on their environmental impacts. She also conducted surveys and interviews with parents to understand their experiences with their children’s shoes. The feedback was clear, parents were frustrated with the constant need to discard perfectly good shoes simply because they no longer fit.

With this insight, Lövinder set out to create a new shoe design. From the outside, this home defies conventional expectations, making “Dont judge a house by its exterior” the new phrase. With its all-black exterior, it may not immediately suggest the vibrant and creative life within. The exterior features a double-gable roof, dark timber cladding, and metal cladding on the roof. This stark façade contrasts sharply with the colorful and airy interior, creating an antithesis that piques curiosity.

The house is ingeniously divided into two volumes that sit comfortably along St John Road, surrounding a courtyard garden. The different ceiling levels within the home create a dynamic spatial experience, with a lower ceiling towards the front that opens up to a double-height vaulted space at the rear. This design choice enhances the perception of space, making the house feel larger than it is.

The site, located in the Lower Wivenhoe Conservation Area, required a design that reflected the rich maritime history and traditional boat-building sheds of the area. Extensive research into local history and building techniques informed the design, which aims to sensitively integrate contemporary elements with the historic fabric of the town.

The site had been neglected for years, with concrete foundations installed by the previous owner for an unrealized project. Paul Archer Design chose to work with these existing foundations, minimizing groundworks, reducing waste, and reusing what was already there. This approach not only preserved the historical integrity of the site but also showcased sustainable building practices.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by wooden shelves for coats and shoes. To the left, the living room features floating wooden shelves for record players and a cozy space for three to four people. Further inside, a staircase on the right separates the kitchen from the entrance foyer. The kitchen itself is a delightful surprise, featuring pink cabinets, white countertops, and floating wood shelves, creating a convenient and stylish space for one person or a couple.

Natural light is a key feature of the home’s design. Skylights and rooflights along the length of the building ensure ample illumination throughout both levels. The open-plan living areas on the ground floor are connected to the outside by large, glazed doors, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The upper levels of the house are defined by the geometry of the roofs, with open spaces overlooking the living areas below. A small lounge area with a dusty pink daybed at the top of the stairs provides a cozy corner to relax. The bedroom, complete with a wood closet and a balcony overlooking the lower level, also features a charming round window.

The design emphasizes convenience, functionality, and minimalism. Wood shelves in the open-plan dining area, pendant lights above the dining table, and strategically placed niches for storage highlight the efficient use of space.
