While there is a learning curve, many new riders find it manageable with practice. The board’s intuitive control system uses pressure-sensitive footpads for smooth acceleration and braking, mimicking natural movements. At the heart of this system is a combination of sensors, including a Hall Effect sensor and an accelerometer. These sensors interpret your body’s movements and translate them into seamless control, making the ride feel intuitive and responsive. This allows riders to accelerate by leaning forward and decelerate by leaning back, creating a natural and engaging riding experience.

For beginners, the Simple Stop feature is particularly beneficial. It allows the rider to come to a gradual stop by leaning back, reducing the risk of falls and helping build confidence. The wide tire is surprisingly responsive, allowing for nimble turns and adjustments to posture. Riders are advised to start practicing in open areas like parking lots or grassy fields and to wear shoes with good grip for better control and stability. Regular practice helps strengthen stabilizer muscles, making rides smoother and more comfortable over time.

Performance

Curiosity about the Onewheel experience led me to try out the Pint X, which promised enhancements in speed and range. The Pint X offers a perfect balance between power and agility, making it an exciting upgrade. With a 750W Hypercore motor, the board reaches a top speed of 18 mph, providing a thrilling ride whether commuting through the city or exploring parks. The range of 12 to 18 miles on a single charge is a significant improvement, allowing for longer adventures without constant recharging.

Riding the Pint X feels liberating, as the increased speed and range mean I no longer need to plan my routes meticulously or worry about running out of battery mid-ride. The powerful motor also delivers extra torque, making the board more responsive when changing directions. The Onewheel relies on a rate gyroscope, which helps maintain balance by measuring orientation and angle changes. This technology ensures stability even as you navigate challenging terrains, making it easier to learn and control. While initially a bit “squirrely,” the wide tire quickly becomes second nature, allowing for smooth and agile turns.

The Onewheel Pint X features four customizable riding modes, or Digital Shaping modes, that can be adjusted through the Onewheel app to match your riding style:

Skyline X: A responsive mode with a maximum speed of about 18 mph, providing an adrenaline-pumping experience.

From the moment I started riding, the Pint X’s performance was apparent. The speed and handling capabilities offered an adrenaline rush with every ride, making it easy to lose track of time while exploring. The improved range means I can focus on the ride rather than constantly checking the battery level.

However, the performance improvements come with a few trade-offs. The thicker front bumper, intended for symmetry, sometimes drags during sharp turns or when recovering from drops. It reduces ground clearance, causing occasional nosedives and making curb navigation tricky. The extra weight of the board, while not drastic, does impact its agility, making it feel less snappy during tight turns. The shared tire with the regular Pint feels less secure at higher speeds, requiring constant vigilance to avoid bumps and obstacles that could cause a wipeout.

Nike self-lacing sneakers are losing their app and their biggest value

Ever since Marty McFly first showed off the idea of self-tying shoelaces in Back to the Future, the footwear industry has been trying to figure out how to turn that fantasy into a reality. As the brand that actually made the movie prop, Nike has been at the forefront of that endeavor and has, in fact, already launched a few pairs of “self-lacing” sneakers years ago. It may have been a hit back then because of its novelty, but the shoe company no longer found any reason to make new ones or to continue supporting the ones that already exist. In fact, it just announced not only the discontinuation of this unique Adapt BB line but also of its app, which will leave some owners rethinking their purchase.

“Self-lacing sneakers” are not as magical as they might sound, simply utilizing magnets and electronics to tighten or loosen the shoes. For the Adapt BB line that launched in 2019, you could do this, along with other functions, by pressing buttons on the side of the shoes or, more conveniently, using a smartphone app. That app also provided settings you can’t very well make on the shoes themselves, particularly changing the colors of the buttons’ lights or saving three preset tightness settings.

Nike, however, has discontinued its self-lacing sneakers, and on August 6th, it will also be dropping its mobile apps. Owners of Adapt BBs don’t have to panic, at least not yet, because they can still install the app until that date, and the app will stay installed on their phones even when it disappears from Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. That does mean, however, that you can no longer install or even transfer the app after that day, so if you lose your phone or change devices, you’ll be out of luck.

Fortunately, the shoes themselves will continue working even without the app, but it will mostly be a manual affair without some conveniences. You will not be able to change light colors anymore, for example, and there will only be one preset remembered. You can, however, still tighten or loosen the shoe by pressing the buttons, which require you to bend over like any ordinary shoe. It might still seem a bit advanced, but no longer as mind-blowing as the original.

The announcement, however, does bring a few concerns and questions to mind. For one, the Adapt BB will lose one of its biggest appeal: its accessibility for people who might have difficulty lacing and unlacing sneakers. It also paints a somewhat dubious future for smart wearables like these. While people are used to changing phones almost every two years and for manufacturers to drop support sooner rather than later, most of us keep our wardrobe and footwear until they’re no longer usable, and manufacturer support is rare if not unheard of.

Nike and Hyperice boots use air compression to massage athlete’s feet, a boon for warmup and recovery

Like precaution is better than cure in everyday life, warmup and recovery before and after a strenuous workout or competition are equally important. Nike has over decades made life immensely comfortable for athletes with the most relaxed footwear options. Now, it is tying up with Hyperice to ensure that the warmup and recovery phases in a player’s life are also taken care of by the Swoosh brand with equal prowess.

To that accord, in collaboration with Hyperice, – a name providing athletes with innovative technology during recovery to improve the performance of muscles and joints – Nike is working on developing a pair of boots and vest that would “help athletes perform at their best throughout training and competition.”

Nike and Hyperice boot and vest, Tobie Hatfield, Senior Director, Nike Athlete Innovation informs, “get the body ready for activity, whether you’re playing for a title or you’re on your feet a lot at work.” An extension of Nike’s focus on the integration of wearable technology in its products, these pair of boots would provide the wear with heat and dynamic air compression at the feet and ankle, which feels like a foot massage. This prepares the body before a workout and can relax the feet after a long stressful game or if the person has been on the foot for too long.

The Nike and Hyperice vest is designed to monitor and maintain the body temperature of a player. For this, the vest is integrated with thermal modules and pressure sensors that work in tandem to ensure effective heating and cooling of the body. Both the vest and the shoes are still under development and will be launched at a “later date,“ Nike confirms.

The pair of high-top shoes, push the boundary of what’s possible for today’s athletes, with air Normatec bladders and warming elements. The air bladders inflate and deflate – what feels like a massage – and allow the heat to distribute evenly and deep in the feet and ankle to provide soothing comfort to the wearer’s feet. Of course, the shoes are primarily targeted at the athletes, with the likes of LeBron James testing them, the adaptation of technology could be beneficial for people whose work requires them to stand and walk too much.

“From the moment I tried the Nike x Hyperice boots and vest while they were still in development more than a year ago, I knew they were going to change the game for athletes’ warm-up and recovery,” LeBron James notes. It is worth noting that the heat and air compression in the Nike x Hyperice boots are customizable. The user can synchronize the heat and compression with the push of a button (at the control panel placed on the midsole), and can even choose to run different settings on individual shoes, if required.

If you stop thinking of the HoloBike as a bike and start thinking of it as a massive gaming controller, it all makes sense. Instead of pressing a forward button or left and right to turn, you cycle and steer to progress in the virtual space. It’s an innovative bridge between the rigor of exercise and the fun of gaming and exploration, but in the comfort of your house. Most exercise equipment leaves you staring at walls or at small displays with stats – the HoloBike immerses you in an environment that you can cycle around, letting you choose your trail.

“When I’m riding outdoors, I can go for 3 hours just absorbed in that captivating rhythm of moving through space. But even 10 minutes training on a stationary bike feels painfully monotonous. That phenomenon of time dilation is fascinating. If we could tap into that sense of flow, we could create a more meditative training experience that enhances focus and endurance,” says Samuel Matson, Saga CEO and Founder.

The hyper-minimalist design of the HoloBike is thanks to LAYER Design, which helped bring a clean aesthetic to the exercise equipment, making it look like something from the future. The spin bike comes with a floor-standing design but a black and white color-way and clean surfaces. A metal disc at the back encases the gear system while pedals on the front let you move. Orange details found around the bike’s frame let you adjust its shape to suit your ergonomics, and a large 4K display gives you glasses-free 3D so you can immerse yourself in your new world as you cycle.

The technology used by the HoloBike is similar to the glasses-free 3D screens seen in some niche smartphones across the last decade (remember the RED Phone?). The result is far superior to some crummy game you’d play on a laptop. As much as Saga Holographics (the company behind the bike) is an exercise company, it’s a spatial reality company too – every single environment offered by the HoloBike is designed from scratch using actual photogrammetric scans of trees, logs, leaves, bushes, roads, signs, etc. The virtual world is a reconstruction of the real world, using a combination of procedural rendering and AI advancements to help render out the entire experience in a way that feels hyperrealistic.

The bicycle itself is also fine-tuned to be a state-of-the-art exercise device. You can control the dashboard using buttons on the handlebars, setting your scene and pre-programming your routine. The bicycle’s proportions can be adjusted, letting you shift the handlebars up or down, move the seat forward or backward, or even adjust the seat’s height. Electromagnetic resistance lets you mimic real-life cycling experiences like gear shifts, or going uphill/downhill. A polymer drivetrain helps enable silent pedaling so all you can hear is the sound coming from the display in front of you, and your own breath as you work out.

The HoloBike has an impressive amount of tech inside it, with an AI-ready chipset that powers the 3D VR experience, a holographic display, and all the features of a cutting-edge spin bike or exercise bike without any of the monotony of regular home gym equipment, or the sneaky monthly fees of a Peloton. At $2599, it prices itself in the same Peloton category too, albeit with a minimalist design that grabs eyes, and a holographic display that grabs minds. Vidéosurveillance algorithmique – Pas le temps de souffler, l’Assemblée prépare déjà son extension !

À peine un an après avoir validé une première « expérimentation » de vidéosurveillance algorithmique (VSA) pour les JO 2024, nos chers députés élevés au grain, reviennent avec une nouvelle proposition de loi pour étendre ces jouets de flicage high-tech aux transports publics. Et moi qui pensais qu’on aurait le droit à un petit répit le temps de voir les dérives des premiers déploiements de VSA et leurs conséquences sur nos libertés, c’est raté ! Le rouleau compresseur sécuritaire est lancé à pleine vitesse et visiblement, impossible de l’arrêter.

L’année dernière, pour soi-disant « sécuriser » les Jeux Olympiques, le gouvernement et sa clique de députés ont voté une loi qui autorise, de manière « expérimentale » bien sûr, l’utilisation d’algorithmes de reconnaissance de comportements suspects dans l’espace public. En gros, on vous colle des caméras high-tech partout capables de repérer toutes seules si quelqu’un a un comportement bizarre, agressif ou menaçant. Un sac abandonné, un déplacement en zigzag dans la foule, des gestes brusques… bref, si l’algo vous trouve louche, vous avez droit à un petit contrôle d’identité ! C’est beau la technologie, non ?

Le hic, c’est que comme d’hab’ et comme pour FR-Alert hier, on met la charrue avant les bœufs. Les premières autorisations pour utiliser ces logiciels de surveillance viennent à peine de tomber et on n’a strictement aucun retour sur leur efficacité ou leurs dangers. Rien, nada, que dalle mais ça n’empêche pas nos valeureux élus de foncer tête baissée pour en remettre une couche. Mercredi, ils vont donc plancher sur un nouveau torchon qui vise à légaliser une autre forme de vidéosurveillance algorithmique, cette fois-ci dans les transports.

Il s’agit d’autoriser la RATP et la SNCF (coucou Valérie !) à utiliser des algorithmes pour faire des recherches automatisées dans leurs enregistrements vidéos afin de répondre à des réquisitions judiciaires. Vous voyez le délire ? Quelqu’un commet un petit délit dans le métro, les flics balancent sa description à l’algo qui va alors passer au peigne fin des heures de vidéos pour le retrouver en quelques minutes. Ça peut aussi retracer son trajet en repérant les correspondances qu’il a empruntées.

Ça peut paraitre super cool comme techno quand on s’appelle Batman et qu’on veut botter le cul du Joker, mais évidemment, ce type de surveillance de masse complètement automatisée est illégal. Mais si vous croyez que ça va gêner le gouvernement, vous êtes bien innocent… car lieu de taper sur les doigts des 200 villes françaises qui utilisent déjà ce genre de logiciels en toute illégalité, ils préfèrent leur dérouler le tapis rouge en faisant mine d' »expérimenter ».

C’est un peu comme si vous annonciez vouloir « expérimenter » le braquage de banque ou la nationale à côté de chez vous à 260 km/h… Si on expérimente, y’a pas de souci non ?

L’année dernière, pour faire passer la pilule de la loi sur les JO, ils nous avaient déjà juré la main sur le cœur que c’était juste pour « voir » et qu’il y aurait une vraie évaluation avant d’aller plus loin. Mais à quoi bon tenir ses promesses quand on peut faire voter ce qu’on veut par une Assemblée aux ordres ? Circulez y a rien à voir !

Bref, vous l’aurez compris, ce nouveau texte n’est qu’une étape de plus vers la généralisation de la surveillance algorithmique de l’espace public. Aujourd’hui les transports, demain ça sera les écoles, les hôpitaux, les centres commerciaux… jusqu’à ce qu’on ne puisse plus faire un pas dans la rue sans être scruté, analysé, fiché…et noté par des algorithmes !

Alors évidemment, il est plus que temps de se bouger les fesses et de gueuler un bon coup ! La Quadrature du Net est sur le pont et, je le rappelle, a lancé une grande campagne de mobilisation avec plein d’outils pour mettre des bâtons dans les roues de Big Brother. Donc ils comptent sur vous pour relayer à fond, interpeller vos élus, informer vos potes… Bref, ne les laissez pas transformer nos villes en gigantesques panoptiques !
