The Ultimate Emergency Multitool: Why First-Responders Love the Leatherman Skeletool RX

Par : Sarang Sheth
22 janvier 2025 à 12:40

There are cameras for the masses, and then cameras for photographers. There are cars for commutes, and cars for automotive enthusiasts. Similarly, there’s EDC (Everyday Carry) meant for the general populace, and then there’s EDC designed specifically for people who need the right tool at the right time in the face of adversity. Every first responder will tell you that a faulty tool (or even the wrong tool) can sometimes be the difference between success and failure, life and death… which is why the EDC meant for these situations needs to be engineered to absolute perfection. Ask first responders what their favorite EDC is and the most common name will be the Skeletool RX from Leatherman.

Measuring about four inches long and tipping the scales at a mere five ounces, the Skeletool RX is a lesson in efficiency. Its stripped-down design—complete with a carabiner clip and integrated bottle opener—might initially give the impression of being too minimal. But spend a week with it, and you’ll likely change your tune. This tool is crafted for those who value simplicity and performance over frills, and it delivers that effortlessly. No unnecessary tools, no distracting details, nothing extraneous – just sheer productivity in a compact, rapid-deploy package.

Designer: Leatherman

The Skeletool comes in a few variants, the RX being one of them. Others are the standard Skeletool, designed for versatile everyday tasks; the CX, which features upgraded materials like DLC-coated stainless steel and a 154CM blade for added durability; and the Skeletool KB, a streamlined option that focuses on knife functionality with a built-in bottle opener. The RX, however, is purpose-built for emergency responders, with features tailored to critical, high-pressure situations. It includes a serrated 154CM blade with a hooked design for cutting through tough materials like seat belts or fabric with ease, as well as a carbide glass breaker for fast access in rescue scenarios. Couple this with the ’emergency’ red colorway and you’ve got yourself the perfect life-saving instrument for those who need split-second reliability.

The blade is a little different from the kind you’d find on other EDC knives. Made from 420HC stainless steel, it’s sharp, durable, and incredibly easy to deploy one-handed. Its unique edge helps with all kinds of cutting techniques, letting you effectively slice through everything from parcels to wood, paracord, and even seatbelts. The knife is big enough to handle slicing, cutting, and general utility tasks but compact enough to avoid being cumbersome. Its placement on the tool ensures it’s always at the ready, giving you a reliable edge in situations where you’d otherwise be scrambling for a dedicated blade.

The pliers, another essential feature, are no slouch either. Designed with needle-nose precision and a sturdy grip, they tackle both delicate and heavy-duty tasks with ease. Whether it’s tightening bolts or gripping small wires, the pliers hold up under pressure—literally. The inclusion of hard-wire cutters and regular wire cutters further adds to their versatility, ensuring that even small tasks around the house or campsite are covered.

On the end of one of its handles is the RX’s its bit driver system. It comes with two double-sided bits stored snugly in the handle, offering four functions right out of the box. Got a loose screw or something that needs repairing? The driver system comes in handy, but one of the bits holds a surprising function – armed with a carbide tip, this bit turns the RX into a glass-breaker that can easily shatter through even reinforced or toughened glass panels, making it perfect for emergency exits or evacuations. Leatherman’s upgrade packs and adapters also let you expand its capabilities like adding 1/4-inch bits or other add-ons.

All its features included, the Skeletool RX still fits comfortably in your grip. Its ergonomic design, coupled with carbon fiber handle accents, ensures a comfortable grip no matter the task. The balance between size and weight feels deliberate, allowing for maximum control without any awkward bulk. Even the mechanism for opening and closing tools has a tactile quality that’s oddly addictive—you’ll catch yourself flicking it open and closed just for the sheer fidgety satisfaction of that smooth motion. Finally, a carabiner clip on the handle lets you easily string it to your backpack or belt loop for secure carrying… and a deep pocket clip lets you slide the Skeletool RX into pockets and pouches for quick-access.

However, the Skeletool isn’t for everyone. Its focus on minimalism means it doesn’t pack as many tools as some of its bulkier competitors. If you’re someone who demands a full arsenal of gadgets in a multi-tool, this might feel limiting. That said, its design philosophy leans heavily on portability and daily practicality, so it never feels like it’s trying to be something it’s not. You can always enhance its functionality with additional bits, but even without them, it covers most of the essentials, making it perfect for its intended target audience of first responders and EDC enthusiasts who just need pure functionality in a small yet sturdy package.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Dragon: A Tribute to the Lunar Year of the Dragon and a Century of Excellence

15 janvier 2025 à 23:30

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars introduced two bespoke Phantom Dragon editions, marking the close of the lunar Year of the Dragon and the beginning of the Phantom’s 100th year. These exclusive commissions combine cultural symbolism with the detailed craftsmanship of Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke Collective, creating a design narrative that honors Chinese traditions within a global luxury framework.

Designer: Rolls-Royce

A Contemporary Interpretation of the Dragon

The Phantom Dragon editions represent a modern reimagining of one of the most powerful symbols in Chinese culture. The dragon, emblematic of strength, prosperity, and wisdom, is intricately integrated into the design language of these vehicles. This integration extends across interior elements, exterior aesthetics, and bespoke details, creating a seamless fusion of tradition and modernity.

Phantom Dragon – United States Edition

The United States edition, available exclusively through Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Orange County, exudes subtle sophistication. The dragon motif is skillfully embroidered onto all four headrests using Phoenix Red stitching, contrasting beautifully with the available Black or White leather upholstery. Each dragon requires precise alignment of 5,449 individual stitches, taking over 20 hours to complete. This intricate process reflects the painstaking attention to detail that defines Rolls-Royce’s approach to bespoke design.

The vehicle’s rear Piano Black picnic tables feature a minimalist stainless steel inlay of the Chinese zodiac calendar. The Bespoke Starlight Headliner, a hallmark of Rolls-Royce, depicts an abstract dragon motif created with 677 individually placed fiber-optic lights. This artistic ceiling feature took artisans over three months to develop, adding an ethereal touch to the cabin’s ambiance.

On the exterior, a Phoenix Red coachline incorporating a subtle dragon motif runs along the vehicle’s side, oriented to face East—symbolizing the direction of the rising sun. The dynamic Cherry Red and Crystal finish color palette further accentuates the car’s elegant silhouette, underscoring its bespoke identity.

Phantom Dragon – China Edition

For the China-exclusive edition, Rolls-Royce draws inspiration from the ancient legend of two dragons safeguarding a pearl. This cultural motif is reflected in the design elements, weaving a narrative of protection and prosperity. The rear picnic tables feature a stainless steel inlay of the Chinese zodiac calendar, with the dragon highlighted in gold. Traditional Chinese calligraphy further enriches the design, marking each year’s corresponding animal.

The centerpiece of this edition’s interior is the Gallery, an intricate marquetry composition crafted from 297 individual pieces of wood. It depicts two dragons amidst swirling clouds guarding a pearl. This elaborate work required three months of dedicated craftsmanship, underscoring Rolls-Royce’s mastery of detail.

The Starlight Headliner in the China edition features 768 red and 576 white fiber-optic lights, creating a luminous abstract of two dragons intertwined. Complemented by 24 shooting stars, this celestial display celebrates heritage and is a testament to Rolls-Royce’s innovative design capabilities.

Honoring the Centenary of Phantom

These bespoke commissions mark a milestone in Rolls-Royce’s storied history, showcasing the dragon’s artistry and symbolism. The Phantom Dragon editions embody the artistry, heritage, and forward-thinking vision that define the Phantom’s legacy. By combining traditional motifs with cutting-edge craftsmanship, Rolls-Royce invites its discerning clientele to experience a piece of automotive history imbued with cultural depth.

Rebecca Davies, Bespoke Designer at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, explains, “Our goal was to create a modern interpretation capturing the dragon’s essence as a symbol of power. The design conveys motion and energy, expressing the dragon as a driving force with depth and complexity reflecting its commanding presence.”

As Rolls-Royce begins its centenary celebrations, the Phantom Dragon editions stand as an extraordinary testament to the brand’s unwavering dedication to craftsmanship and cultural storytelling. These vehicles not only honor the past but also set a bold precedent for the next chapter of Phantom’s illustrious journey.

This Designer Has A Wild Idea To Make Tech Companies Great Again – Tech Trading Cards

Par : Sarang Sheth
15 janvier 2025 à 21:45

Tech isn’t boring. At least, it shouldn’t be. We’re living in a world where pocket-sized wonders connect us to everything humanity has ever created, yet unboxing these marvels can feel like opening a pack of bland stationery. Unboxing videos which were once the highlight of every tech youtuber’s career is now practically an afterthought.

Why? Companies have ruined unboxing experiences to prioritize profits. You’d get chargers, earphones, cases, screen protectors, and sometimes even brand stickers (looking at you, Apple) inside smartphone boxes. Now, merely a phone and if you’re lucky, a braided cable. Designer Andrea Copellino has a solution to fix this problem – Bring back excitement, curiosity, and storytelling to technology using trading cards. Yes, trading cards. And it’s not as random as it sounds. It’s the perfect intersection of nostalgia, storytelling, and fun.

Designer: Andrea Copellino

To demonstrate this, Copellino chooses tech startup Nothing to demonstrate this idea. Nothing, a tech brand with a quirky ethos of transparency and an obsession with reintroducing joy into technology, is exactly the kind of company that could pull this off. Their design language already reads like a conversation with an old friend: clear materials that show the guts of the product, a marketing team that doesn’t mind poking fun at itself, and a YouTube channel where their designers casually break down creative decisions. It’s approachable and refreshingly human. But Francesco and his collaborator Francesco (yes, another Francesco), think the brand could do even more. They believe Nothing’s biggest untapped potential is right there in the unboxing experience.

Now, unboxing isn’t typically a topic that gets pulses racing, but it’s where Francesco’s storytelling brilliance shines. He’s reimagining unboxing as a chance to weave narrative into the very first interaction you have with a product. Instead of the usual manuals and filler paper, Francesco envisions collectible trading cards tucked into Nothing’s products. Imagine this: you open your new earbuds, and alongside them is a sleek card adorned with abstract art that hints at the product’s creative inspiration. Flip it over, and there’s a short story about the quirky origins of the design—like how pharmaceutical packaging inspired the bubble-like Ear (A) case.

These cards aren’t just gimmicks. They’re thoughtfully crafted artifacts. Each card would feature high-quality illustrations, metadata like product names and release dates, and captivating anecdotes. Even the card’s material and packaging echo Nothing’s aesthetic: semi-transparent paper, subtle textures, and a pierced detail that nods to their love for transparency. The goal isn’t just to inform but to delight. It’s tactile, personal, and—most importantly—memorable.

And the brilliance of this idea? It’s collectible. Francesco’s design aligns perfectly with how Nothing already connects with its audience. The company actively invites its community to participate in its creative process, from forums to YouTube comment sections. These cards could take that engagement to the next level. Imagine Nothing hosting design contests where fans create illustrations for the cards or special edition collectibles handed out at launch events. It’s a way to keep the community invested without the logistical nightmares of overly ambitious projects like Nothing’s Community Edition Phone.

But Francesco’s concept goes even deeper. Trading cards tap into something bigger than tech; they tap into culture. Millennials and Gen Z grew up with Pokémon cards, Magic: The Gathering, and other collectible phenomena. The resurgence of physical trading cards, fueled by their nostalgic and tactile appeal, isn’t slowing down. Francesco sees these cards as an opportunity to blend Nothing’s bold industrial design with the emotional pull of cherished childhood memories. It’s a way to bridge the cold utility of tech with the warmth of human experience.

And it’s practical too. The cards don’t rely on apps, servers, or any digital infrastructure—they’re yours forever. No subscriptions. No updates. Just a simple piece of art and story that fits perfectly in your hand (or a Pokémon binder, for those inclined). Even better, they’re scalable. Every Nothing device could come with a unique card, offering a new piece of the brand’s story to collectors with each purchase. It’s an idea that feels premium but doesn’t break the bank.

The most exciting part? This idea could redefine how we think about unboxing. Instead of it being an afterthought, it becomes an event—a chance to connect with the product and its creators on a deeper level. Francesco’s trading cards aren’t about adding unnecessary fluff; they’re about reminding us that technology isn’t just functional. It’s personal. It has stories, quirks, and, thanks to Nothing, a sense of humor.

Nothing’s ethos is rooted in challenging conventions, and Francesco’s trading card concept feels like an extension of that mission. It’s a bold, fun, and slightly eccentric idea that fits seamlessly into their brand DNA. It would be fun if Nothing entertained the concept – there’s really little to lose given how simple the execution is with something as basic as a trading card. At least it’ll revive the unboxing experience, turning it into something that has a little touch of intrigue and suspense… and everyone loves a little suspense, right?

The Small Samurai: Upgrade Your EDC with this Ultra-Compact Titanium Pocket Knife

Par : Sarang Sheth
21 décembre 2024 à 02:45

I remember reviewing a tiny knife earlier this year and using the phrase ‘Napoleon of EDC’ to describe how compact-yet-ruthlessly-efficient it was. To be honest, it’s a phrase I’ve come to love and I wish I could use it all the time… but the problem is that there can only be one Napoleon. However, the NanoMax embodies a similar spirit, with its small form-factor. Barely the size of a key when closed, the NanoMax opens up to become quite the powerhouse, getting you through any scenario where a sharp blade comes in handy.

Compact yet impressively capable, the NanoMax by TiGo is designed to slip seamlessly into your everyday routine. Crafted with a strong GR5 titanium frame and a premium M390 steel blade, this mini folding knife measures a mere 6.9cm (2.7 inches) when closed and weighs just 53.5g. The result is a tool that’s as convenient to carry as a house key, yet robust enough to tackle demanding tasks whenever they arise.

Designer: TiGo

Click Here to Buy Now: $79 $109 (28% off) Hurry! Only 58 Discounted Units Left!

Rather than merely shrinking down a standard knife, the NanoMax brings purposeful design to the EDC scene. Its sleek titanium handle, fortified with surface anti-slip grooves, ensures a confident grip in any condition, while the M390 blade maintains a razor-sharp edge through long stretches of frequent use. The combination isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about long-term durability, reliable cutting performance, and a consistently refined experience.

Two distinct deployment methods—an integrated back flipper and a thumb groove—allow for effortless one-handed opening. Meanwhile, a secure liner lock mechanism keeps the blade firmly in place once engaged, providing peace of mind whether you’re slicing open a package, paring down kindling, or performing detailed craftwork. A roller bearing system ensures each opening action feels smooth and satisfying, minimizing any hesitation when you need the blade most.

Once flipped open, you’re greeted with a curved-belly Wharncliffe blade that looks like it means business. Measuring 53mm (2.1 inches), the blade’s tiny, but goes above and beyond to get the job done. Made from M390, a martensitic chromium steel that’s incredibly tough, corrosion-resistant, and easy to sharpen, the blade complements the NanoMax’s titanium handle perfectly. It outshines other steels like D2 and Damascus with how well it retains edges, and that Wharncliffe blade profile (also known as sheepsfoot) handles everything from cutting to slicing, piercing, whittling, and scraping. It’ll just as easily slice through boxes as it will through your seatbelt, giving it the kind of versatility that’s somewhat uncommon in the tiny knife world.

In an emergency, the titanium frame can pair with a ferro rod to help spark a fire, making the NanoMax more than a mere cutting tool. Whether you’re slicing rope on a campsite or opening letters at the office, this knife transitions smoothly between urban and outdoor environments. Its slim profile ensures that it never feels cumbersome or out of place—just ready for action at a moment’s notice.

For added practicality, a built-in keychain hole and pocket clip give you flexible carry options. Attach it to your keys, clip it to your pocket or bag, or hang it as a pendant. The NanoMax’s Tritium slot (vial sold separately) even lets you add a subtle glow-in-the-dark element for easy spotting in low light, reinforcing that this knife is designed with real-world conditions in mind.

At under 2 ounces, and roughly the size of a key or a thumbdrive, the NanoMax really does live up to its name. It’s tiny, but not as a compromise because it definitely maxes out with the materials it uses. To be honest, the use of titanium and M390 are exactly what allow the NanoMax to be so tiny, giving you something that punches well above its weight.

The NanoMax comes in just a single colorway for now, with its nude titanium and steel finish that kind of does feel like a classic color palette, if you ask me. The rawness of this lack of color or anodization gets taken away by the fact that the knife comes with a fair bit of detailing, including straight lines, sharp angles, and the judicious use of curves and radii. Simple grooved patches give the knife grip, and those tritium slots let you customize the EDC, making it visible even in low-light.

Although TiGo doesn’t explicitly mention this anywhere, you can expect a knife like the NanoMax to last you decades without breaking a sweat. Titanium has the ability to withstand pretty much any form of physical abuse, while the M390 blade will do so too… but just in case its edge wears out after a few years, a quick sharpening session gets you back to the NanoMax being its deadly, compact self. Sort of like the tiny little warrior I referenced earlier.

After meticulous oxidation treatment, the handle’s surface achieves remarkable wear and scratch resistance, with a surface hardness not unlike alloy steel. The OKNIFE XEN-OAL incorporates a frame-lock mechanism on its aluminum alloy handle, taking full advantage of the excellent toughness and elasticity of OAL™ super aluminum. This ensures the knife remains securely locked during use, providing stability and peace of mind. No matter the task, you can trust that this knife will stay securely in place, ready to perform.

Adding to its allure, the OKNIFE XEN-OAL features a handle with an exquisite CNC-machined 3D triangular pyramid array pattern. Camal Studio’s Scoperta is a desirable Barchetta inspired by the classic Caterham

Par : Gaurav Sood
2 décembre 2024 à 21:45

Ever since the Caterham launched in the early 1970s, the hip roadster has been popular with motorheads who love the thrill of driving and the wind in their hair. The current model Caterham Super 7 has not changed much from the original in terms of looks and that can be a boring side of evolution.

Camal Studio, the Italian design company that’s renowned for its sublime creations like the world’s first hyperlimousine has derived inspiration from the Caterham and the sports cars of the 50s and 60s to come up with the renders of an open-top sports car. Dubbed Scoperta, the sexy barchetta binds a timeless aesthetic with modern elements any car enthusiast will find hard to resist.

Designer: Camal Design Studio

The performance car weighing just 1,235 pounds is based on the Caterham Seven 485 platform. The hunk is powered by a 2.0-liter Ford Duratec engine churning out 240 horsepower to complement the bold looks. The design team at Camal has given the car a front half with a big clamshell-styled hood that is identified by its curvacious magnetism and subdued creases. This is exemplified further by the front splitter and large grille that are head turners. The flowing aerodynamic shape flows to the sides contrasted by the classic mirrors and side exhausts. Move to the rear and you have a bespoke decklid housing the spare wheel and contoured tail embellished with sleek LED taillights.

On the inside, the Scoperta cocoons the riders in an elliptical cabin that has a single panel flowing over the dashboard. The speedometer and tachometer are positioned horizontally in this section. What I love to the core is a three-spoke steering wheel having a five-speed gated manual shifter. The headrests also have their distinctive curvaceous shape for a sense of security. Other modifications on the inside include a carbon fiber roll bar for driving safety.

This stunning barrechta is yet to go beyond the concept stage but Camal Studio reassures a limited series production for homologated road legal driving could be a possibility in the future. When it does arrive, the car will cost around $159,000. Whether the cost is inclusive of the donor car is not yet clear, however, this price tag will make it one of the costliest Caterham to ever hit the road.

Turning 350 Razor Blades into a Super-Sharp Damascus Steel Knife

Par : Sarang Sheth
17 octobre 2024 à 20:45

But why make a massive blade out of something that can ALREADY cut things – you ask? It probably sounds like using a lot of small LEGO bricks to make one large LEGO brick, right? Well, the thing with razor blades is that they’re made to serve a finite purpose. They’ll last a few days, maybe a few weeks, and then they need to be discarded. Razor blades are ridiculously sharp, but they’re also ridiculously flimsy and you can break one with your own hands… so YouTuber Knives Project decided to just use a bunch of them to make something more everlasting, more worthy of being cherished, while being just as sharp.

It took 350 blades being forged together into a metal ingot to make this final knife. The result is truly heirloom-worthy. The knife sports a gorgeous marbled blade created thanks to the combination of the steel used in the razors as well as the steel powder added into the ingot to fill in the air gaps. The knife finally gets a nice wooden handle with a bit of metal at the beginning of the hilt.

Designer: Knives Project

The 15-and-a-half-minute video guides you through Knives Project’s process, from forging the steel ingot to shaping it, etching it, honing it, and then building the handle for the knife. The result looks rather artisanal, with a kitchen knife-style design sporting a drop-point edge and a wonderful marbled body reminiscent of Damascus Steel. The knife also comes with a wooden handle with an octagonal cross-section that’s easy to grip and maneuver.

Razor blades are primarily made from martensitic steel – a steel alloy known for its high strength and wear resistance, with the more expensive ones being made from carbon steel. Given that the knife uses 350 of these razors, it’s possible Knives Project sprung for regular blades, adding them one by one into a bolt to create a cylindrical form. The cylinder was then dropped into a hollow metal block and all the air gaps were filled with steel filings, resulting in a solid block that had no air gaps.

Once the metal block goes into the furnace, the steel inside begins melting, forming a rough cluster that Knives Project extracts by opening the outer box using an angle grinder. The reason is that this outer box is made of iron, while its internal components are the steel you need to form into an ingot.

The process involved constantly heating, hammering, and forming the resulting metal ingot into a flat strip that could then be cut into the knife’s shape. Once cut, the surface was made smooth before being dipped into an acid bath to reveal the marbled pattern caused by the different kinds of steel used in the knife.

Once the blade was completely ready, Knives Project added a handle to it, using primarily wood combined with metal and a black block of presumably polymer to create a fair amount of contrast. The handle was given an octagonal cross-section and a fairly simple silhouette. Arguably a knife this pretty could be given a prettier, more ergonomic handle, but then again, that may steal from the star of the show, its blade – forged from 350 razors. Now if only Knives Project could cut that blade up into 350 pieces and turn them back into razors!

Flashlight design concept reframes an ordinary tool as a familiar smartphone

Par : JC Torres
7 octobre 2024 à 10:07

There’s no rule that says everyday tools need to be mundane and boring. With the trend in everyday carries and kits, people are discovering how ordinary objects can become more interesting or even more functional by changing their designs. Sometimes that means giving the object a fresh new look, one far removed from the original design and yet even more familiar to people. A flashlight, for example, doesn’t have to just be a cylindrical or rectangular stick you point with, and this concept design runs with that freedom to envision alternative forms, giving it the shape and interface of one of the most familiar products of this age: our smartphones.

Designer: Sihyun Choi

There is, of course, a good reason why conventional flashlights are shaped as long fat cylinders. They’re easy to grab and wrap your hands around, and their length allows you to possibly insert it in narrow spaces. There might also be some traces of their original inspiration, the equally cylindrical candlesticks. It might be an ergonomic design, but ergonomics can change over time as well.

Today, for example, many people are just as adept at grasping their smartphones in their hands, which is the inspiration behind the WHITT concept. In a nutshell, it takes the basic form of a smartphone but puts the internals of a flashlight instead. It’s not a completely faithful recreation of a smartphone, of course, considering it tapers to one side a bit. It actually looks more like a lopsided flask or even a handheld laser projector in this case.

WHITT is also operated like a smartphone, at least when it comes to turning it on and off. The button is at the side, like where you would find a phone’s own power button, which is something we probably unconsciously push dozens or even hundreds of times a day. The similarities end there, however, as the flashlight isn’t even powered by rechargeable batteries. It uses two AA batteries that can be easily swapped out, unlike the fixed batteries inside smartphones.

As interesting as the design might be, it still leaves the question of ergonomics hanging. Opposite the tapered side is a curved edge with a ribbed surface that should improve the flashlight’s grip. Even then, a cylindrical flashlight is probably still easier to grip firmly, which is an important aspect of the tool’s utility.
