Soft furniture concept lets you place comfort on a pedestal

Par : Ida Torres
20 février 2025 à 09:45

When looking at options for furniture for their new or current house, people either look at the design and aesthetics while some prefer the more comfortable ones over the ones that would look good in their space. But of course there are those that can probably offer you both so wouldn’t you want to have something that looks good in your space and also is pretty comfortable that you’d want to use it for a long time?

Designer: Mudu Studios

SOLO is a concept for a furniture collection that could offer both comfort and design. The focal point of this collection is the plush upholstery that is seemingly placed on a pedestal because of the materials used. The collection includes an armchair, sofa, and a pouf, all of which feature a soft aesthetic, in contrast to the metal or natural veneer of the base which acts like a pedestal to showcase the luxuriously soft upholstery and textile. This contrast highlights the plushness of the seating while adding a touch of modern sophistication. Accent seams further enhance the visual appeal, adding subtle detailing and contributing to the overall character of the collection.

The collection’s expressive design language allows it to seamlessly integrate into a variety of interior styles, from contemporary minimalist spaces to more eclectic settings. The varied color palette offers a range of options to suit individual preferences and complement existing décor. A standout feature of the SOLO armchair is its innovative twist mechanism. This thoughtful addition enhances comfort and allows users to easily find their perfect lounging position, further emphasizing the collection’s focus on relaxation and well-being. This isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a harmonious balance between form and function. The elevated design not only adds visual interest but also contributes to the overall comfort by providing optimal support. The combination of soft textiles, a sturdy base, and thoughtful features like the twist mechanism in the armchair make SOLO a truly exceptional collection.

Alas, the SOLO collection is still a concept and they are currently looking for a manufacturer. But to have something that is visually attractive and seemingly comfortable should make it easy for them to eventually find someone that can make this design a reality. I am now currently dreaming of taking a nap on that sofa or reading a book for hours on that armchair or sitting on that pouf while chatting and drinking with friends.

Leo concept chair lets painters have more mobility while working on canvas

Par : Ida Torres
9 février 2025 à 23:30

Most chairs are designed for the everyday act of sitting – at a desk, relaxing, or enjoying a meal. But what about those who require a more dynamic and specialized seating experience? Painters, for example, often work on vertical canvases, require a chair that offers mobility, support, and freedom of movement. Industrial design student Teo Primo Frizzarin recognized this need and developed the “Leo” chair, a concept specifically designed for artists.

Designer: Teo Primo Frizzarin

Frizzarin, studying at ECAL (University of Art and Design Lausanne), focused his efforts on creating a chair that caters to the unique demands of working with a vertical surface. The Leo chair aims to provide painters with enhanced mobility and crucial arm support, essential for the creation of their masterpieces. The name itself, “Leo,” likely evokes the legacy of Leonardo da Vinci, hinting at the chair’s artistic purpose. The Leo chair draws inspiration from the form and function of a horse saddle. This design provides a stable seat while simultaneously granting the user greater freedom of movement compared to a traditional chair.

You get a conventional looking backrest but it also appears to be an arm support, which is probably what’s needed more. This support is not only adjustable in height but also in position, accommodating the varied postures and angles painters adopt while working. This adaptability is key, as artists often shift their positions and reach across the canvas as their work progresses. The prototype of the Leo chair showcases its mobility-enhancing features, including integrated wheels. These wheels allow the artist to easily maneuver around their workspace, retrieving paints, brushes, solvents, or other materials without needing to stand up and disrupt their creative flow. This thoughtful detail addresses the practical needs of painters who often require quick access to a variety of tools and supplies.

Frizzarin’s innovative design earned him a “Très Bien” mention for his diploma project, suggesting a promising future for the Leo chair. This recognition underscores the potential market for specialized furniture that caters to the specific requirements of artists. Currently, painters often rely on standard chairs, rolling chairs, or swivel chairs, none of which are perfectly optimized for the demands of their craft. The Leo chair offers a compelling alternative, potentially revolutionizing the way artists interact with their workspace. While still a concept, the Leo chair represents a significant step towards a more ergonomic and artist-centric approach to furniture design. It raises the question: will the Leo chair become the new standard for artists’ seating, or will it inspire further innovation in this often-overlooked area of design?

Toshiba REGZA AI Engine: Advancing Home Entertainment Through AI

7 février 2025 à 23:30

Toshiba has been a consistent presence in television manufacturing, continuously refining its technology to enhance the home viewing experience. The REGZA AI Engine, particularly the latest REGZA Engine ZRi, represents a significant evolution in television technology. By incorporating artificial intelligence and machine learning, this advanced processor improves picture and audio quality in real-time, adapting to various content types, user preferences, and environmental conditions. Unlike traditional television processors that operate based on static settings, the REGZA AI Engine dynamically adjusts visuals and sound through ongoing scene analysis, providing an optimized experience for viewers.

Designer: Toshina

AI-Powered Picture Optimization

The REGZA Engine ZRi is designed to deliver exceptional picture quality by intelligently analyzing every frame and making precise adjustments to resolution, contrast, color accuracy, and brightness. This AI-driven approach ensures that all types of content, from streaming services to live television, are displayed with clarity and vibrancy.

One of the key features of this technology is 4K AI Upscaling, which enhances lower-resolution content to appear sharper and more detailed on high-resolution screens. Unlike traditional upscaling methods, which simply stretch and sharpen images, Toshiba’s AI-powered approach reconstructs fine details by using deep learning to predict and fill in missing visual information. This results in a more authentic and natural-looking image, even when watching older or lower-quality video sources.

The Dolby Vision IQ and HDR 10+ Adaptive support further enhance the viewing experience by dynamically adjusting brightness and contrast based on ambient lighting conditions. With these technologies, dark scenes remain detailed and visible without overexposure, and bright sequences maintain clarity without appearing washed out. Whether watching a cinematic blockbuster or a high-action sports event, the REGZA AI Engine ensures the best possible visual quality in any lighting environment.

Additionally, AI Picture Optimizer detects the type of content being displayed—such as movies, live sports, or animation—and automatically adjusts color saturation, contrast levels, and sharpness to optimize for that specific category. This feature ensures that vibrant hues in animated films remain true to their intended palette while maintaining a more natural color balance for live-action footage.

Intelligent Sound Engineering with AI

Beyond just enhancing visuals, the REGZA AI Engine brings significant advancements to audio processing, delivering an immersive and cinematic sound experience. Traditional televisions often rely on static audio settings that do not adjust based on the type of content or the acoustic environment. In contrast, Toshiba’s AI-powered audio processing dynamically optimizes sound based on real-time analysis.

The REGZA Power Audio Extreme system enhances depth and clarity by using psychoacoustic bass enhancement technology. This technology adjusts low-frequency sounds to create a richer and more powerful auditory experience. This is particularly noticeable in action movies and live concerts, where deep bass tones contribute to the overall impact of the scene.

Additionally, AI Sound Calibration intelligently balances high, mid, and low frequencies depending on the content being played. For dialogue-heavy content, the AI emphasizes speech clarity, ensuring that voices remain crisp and intelligible without being overshadowed by background music or sound effects. For action sequences and live sports, the AI enhances spatial audio, making the audience feel immersed in the scene.

Another key feature is Room Acoustic Optimization, which uses a built-in radar sensing system to analyze the room’s dimensions and adjust the sound output accordingly. This means that regardless of where a viewer is sitting, the television optimizes the audio projection to ensure a balanced and immersive experience.

Redefining Visual and Audio Perception Through Smart Technology

The Toshiba TV X9900 delivers lifelike visuals through millions of self-luminous pixels that detect nearby colors. It offers 4K quality with Full HD content revealing details that were previously unnoticed. From nature documentaries to sports broadcasts, the television’s color and shadow reproduction transports viewers to remarkable visual landscapes. REGZA Power Audio Extreme provides immersive sound, while its psychoacoustic bass enhancement technology intelligently adjusts frequencies, creating a powerful auditory experience that transforms entertainment.

Toshiba continues to push innovation in smart home entertainment, ensuring its AI-driven technologies evolve alongside consumer expectations. With REGZA Intelligence, viewers can experience adaptive enhancements that improve every aspect of their television use. The company’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality visuals, intelligent sound calibration, and AI-powered enhancements set a new benchmark for immersive entertainment.

Standing floor lamp uses recycled leather to mix urban boldness and cozy warmth

Lamps do more than just illuminate our surroundings. They can very well change the mood in a room, especially ones whose designs are visible to everyone. The lights could give off a cool vibe that encourages productivity, or it could have a warm glow that makes you feel comfortable and at peace. Sometimes the lamp designs themselves turn a room’s narrative in a certain direction, from nature-inspired organic forms to minimalist, modern, and geometric shapes.

Lamp designs don’t have to be elaborate and complicated to have such effects. Sometimes, just the combination of form and materials is enough to be associated with certain themes and emotions. This standing floor lamp, for example, has a simple bar bent at an angle and a textile cover, but these already effectively convey the atmosphere of a city street mixed with the softness of a pasture.

Designer: Amuni Studio

Traditional street lamps cast a unique glow on the world of the night. Given their utility, their light can sometimes be harsh and cold, but it also offers safety and confidence in the dark of night. The shape of these lamps has almost become iconic, and one only needs to see the silhouette to make the association.

Corium is a standing floor lamp design that does exactly that, using the simple shape of a lamp arm bent forward at a slight angle. The lampshade is also nothing more than a long sheet of metal curving over the length of the light element like an arch. A layer of proprietary recycled leather is draped over this shade, adding a touch of organic texture and warmth to the composition.

In a way, Corium represents contrasting elements that find their harmony inside the modern home. There is the street lamp that is a staple of outdoor urban lighting, while leather is more closely associated with nature and fashion. Utility and luxury, coldness and warmth, light and shade all come together in a simple yet striking design that gives light in its own unique way.

Created using Luxion Technology (luxion.com)

Initially designed to be a pendant lamp, Corium is also an experiment in designing and producing a product entirely done in Latin America. In addition to components sourced locally, the talent and manufacturing involved were also done locally. It gives the lamp an even deeper narrative and a value that transcends its surface appearance.

Modular laptops and mini PCs might be around the corner thanks to Intel

Par : JC Torres
27 janvier 2025 à 11:07

Despite laptops overtaking their towering cousins in market share, these portable computers still lack one vital trait that has kept stationary desktops still relevant today. Desktop computers are, to a very large extent, modular by design, making it easier to upgrade and replace components as needs and technologies change. Sure, some laptops have upgradable RAM and storage, but that’s pretty much all there is to them given certain limitations in design.

Those limitations include the design of the motherboard itself, an all-in-one all-or-nothing object that is pretty much the soul of a computer. Intel, however, is proposing a rather ground-breaking change that will help make these components more repairable and less wasteful. If followed by its partners, it won’t just kick off a new age of modular laptops, it could even give Intel and AMD a huge edge over their Arm-based rivals such as Qualcomm and, of now, Apple.

Designer: Intel

The difference in motherboards between desktops and laptops is like night and day. Desktops follow an industry convention that has been shaped over decades, allowing components from rival companies to be mixed and matched as the consumer desires. Laptop motherboards, on the other hand, are often designed based on brand needs and whims. More importantly, they come as a whole package, with many parts soldered onto the board, including the ones that get worn out faster than others.

Intel’s proposed guidelines try to split the laptop motherboard into three distinct parts, two of which would hold the I/O or input out components such as USB and HDMI ports. The third would be where the core silicon is located, specifically the CPU and the GPU, among others. The modularity would allow different affected parts to be replaced if broken or, if desired, even upgraded, without throwing away the rest of the motherboard.

Those guidelines also have something for mini PCs, which are like the middle child between desktops and laptops. In this matter, the CPU and motherboard are separated from the graphics card and other components, making it easier to swap out GPUs or CPUs in the future. The growing popularity of mini PCs, partially thanks to the Mac mini and Mac studio, could be the driving force behind this initiative. Ironically, Intel itself has given up on the form factor, licensing its “NUC” brand to ASUS.

Designer: Framework

These guidelines might be ideal for reducing e-waste and promoting the right to repair, but it still all depends on whether other players are willing to play ball. Laptop manufacturers might be hesitant to do the work redesigning their laptops, and Intel’s rival AMD might not be keen to cooperate either. It’s still a distant dream, but one can already have a foretaste of the future today with the Framework laptops, proving that it can indeed be done with the right design.

19-Foot High Bookshelves with a Deejay Booth – This Streetwear Store is Breaking All The Rules

Par : Sarang Sheth
26 janvier 2025 à 23:30

The one word you usually associate with a library is ‘quiet’, but step into this library and you’re greeted with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a DJ booth with a massive sound system. Designed almost as if libraries met counterculture, this is the ‘Nude Library’ – a streetwear store in Barcelona, Spain.

This space doesn’t whisper sophistication the way a conventional library does; instead, it cranks up the volume and tells you to pay attention. Designed by El Departamento for the Nude Project’s flagship store in La Roca Village, it’s where architecture meets attitude. The shelves frame the room like a stage, elevating the DJ booth—literally and metaphorically—into the spotlight. When the music starts, the sound resonates off the wood, filling the space with energy. A librarian worth their salt wouldn’t survive a day in this place!

Designer: El Departamento

The Nude Project is a brand that champions creativity and self-expression, a philosophy echoed throughout its flagship store. Known for its bold streetwear that blends urban aesthetics with artistic flair, the Nude Project caters to a young, vibrant audience. The store’s prime objective isn’t to purely sell clothes—it’s to cultivate a community. By incorporating design, music, and a striking visual narrative, the Nude Library becomes more than a retail space; it’s a hub for inspiration and individuality.

What’s genius here is the flow of the design. The shelves serve as the backbone of the room, giving it warmth and depth. The wood’s natural texture feels grounding, a perfect counterpoint to the industrial coolness of the sound system integrated within. That DJ booth doesn’t just sit there awkwardly; it fits, almost too perfectly, as if the entire space was built around it. There’s something irresistibly cheeky about the way it all comes together—a space that takes itself seriously but doesn’t lose its sense of fun.

Beyond the music and the drama of the shelves, there’s an intentional softness tucked away in the fitting room. Baby blue tones dominate here, with rounded forms and a sense of calm that feels like a deliberate contrast to the rest of the store’s boldness. It’s a thoughtful touch, giving visitors a moment to pause and reset before diving back into the high-energy main floor. It’s this kind of balance that makes the design feel alive, like it’s breathing with you as you move through it.

The unique juxtaposition of a library with a club make the store a place you can’t ignore. It’s the kind of store that makes you linger, not because you’re shopping but because the space itself is an experience. The shelves tell one story, the music tells another, and somehow they’re all part of the same conversation. It’s not just retail; it’s an interaction, a memory, a reason to return.

Sure, libraries are supposed to be quiet. But this one throws that idea out the window, replacing it with beats, energy, and creativity. The Nude Library rewrites the rules and then plays them at full volume.
