So if you’re trying to get away from your gadgets, staring up at the ceiling and counting sheep may be your other option. But what if you could see something else other than your blank ceiling.

Loom is a concept for a beam projector that can project images onto your ceiling. It is meant to add to the atmosphere of your room, whether you’re trying to fall asleep or just relaxing after a hard day of work. Not everyone has the luxury to actually go outside and stare at the stars or at the nature surrounding them, so this is probably the next best thing.

The device is something that you attach to the wall and turning it on or off is designed to be like opening a door, letting you step into another world. Once you turn the knob so to speak, which is actually a small telescope-like device, your ceiling will be transformed into whatever image you want to see up there. There’s a controller that looks like a round speaker that you can rotate to adjust the angle of the projection and to rotate the image horizontally or vertically.

This is a pretty interesting idea especially if your ceiling is just a boring, plain color. It would also be nice if it can also project short videos that can loop so you can see things like clouds moving across the sky or anything that can lull you to sleep or relax.

Apple revolutionized the tablet market with the iPad Pro, turning a content consumption device into a productivity machine. That said, all tablets, regardless of design, are particularly great for watching videos because of their large screens. That said, that great viewing experience only applies to the owner unless you don’t mind people looking over your shoulder the whole time.

These days, you can always “cast” your videos and photos from a tablet to a TV, but only if you actually own a TV. People are now moving away from those big boxes and into the land of projectors, and this rather curious tablet tries to smash those two worlds together, offering a viewing experience you can take with you anywhere and also enjoy with others comfortably.

Rugged tablets are nothing new and are mostly marketed for industrial workers and adventurers. That doesn’t mean they can’t be used like regular tablets, of course, such as for watching videos during your downtime. But if you have a thick and heavy tablet anyway, why not take advantage of that to do more things?

The 8849 TANK Pad is an extra-thick rugged tablet that does exactly that and hides a few extra features you might not have expected from a tablet. Then again, we have seen a smartphone that had a built-in pico projector, so it’s not that far-fetched. The exact lamp brightness isn’t detailed, but it should be no problem in a dark room. Whether it’s watching alone on the 11-inch Full HD 120Hz screen or watching with others on a flat wall, this tablet is ready to deliver.

It also has a few other features that could be considered unique or at least no longer available on most tablets today, not counting the 3.5mm headphone jack. It has a large trapezoidal surface that acts as a very bright torchlight, and its large 21,000 mAh battery can be used to charge other devices. On its back is an odd indentation that’s meant to screw into stands and tripods.

What makes the 8849 TANK Pad even more special is that, unlike most rugged tablets, it actually has rather decent specs, at least enough for gaming on the side. Gaming that you can show off to friends in your room. The catch to this almost tempting device is its thick and heavy design, so it’s not something you’ll be able to comfortably hold in your hands for a long time. Projectors also tend to generate a lot of heat, so it’s dubious how long this tablet will last in that condition.

You may know Leica for their expensive pro-grade cameras, but did you know the company makes expensive projectors too? Aside from high-end cameras, the company has made in-roads in quite a few industries that rely on optics, like binoculars, televisions, and projectors. Although the brand is most known for building products with a premium price tag, their latest projector, the Cine Play 1 has an unusually affordable price, considering its 4K output and ability to output a massive 300-inch screen to rival most cinemas.

I’ve long been an advocate for projectors. They’re the same price as TVs, while being portable and having the ability to cast displays nearly 5x larger than most televisions. While the Cine Play 1’s $3,795 price tag isn’t really “affordable”, it does feel so when compared to something like Samsung’s 146-inch “The Wall” 4K television that has an eye-watering $220,000 market price. Contrast it with any other leading 4K long-throw projector brand too, and the Cine Play 1 fits well within the $2000-$4000 range for its category.

However, its crown jewel isn’t the audio, it’s the integration of a projector on the top left of the speaker, which reportedly shines ‘stars and lights’ on the ceiling to create am ambiance that goes together with the music you’re listening to. Details on the projector seem scarce at this point, but given the Rs. 6,999 INR ($83.8 USD) price point, we wouldn’t expect anything too immersive or detailed.

The speaker packs a lot of punch for its price tag, boasting a 60W output. A control panel on top of the boAt Stone Lumos lets you adjust various parameters, like playback, volume, EQ, and even cycle through the 7 different projection modes the speaker has to offer.

The control panel offers a variety of adjustments, while a two-part LED projector casts light and stars onto the ceiling above, creating a soothing atmosphere.

The speaker comes with a maximum of 9 hours of playback (with the projector off), has support for the boAt Hearables app, is IPX4 splash and water resistant, and has a built-in mic for hands-free calling. The boAt Stone Lumos also packs Bluetooth 5.3 for a crisp connection, although if you’re old school, there’s 3.5mm aux and USB connectivity too!

What the boAt Stone Lumos does is rather unusual, but seems pretty fitting. Most mid-range Bluetooth speaker do pack their own ambient backlights and LED strips for an extra audio-visual oomph, so the fact that this speaker actually turns your room into a makeshift galaxy just feels like taking wireless speakers to their logical next-step. Now to just play Sky Full Of Stars by Coldplay on this bad boy!

For better or for worse, depending on where you stand on the debate, artificial intelligence has changed and will continue changing how we create and communicate. Services like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini, and Copilot are pretty popular with those who are adventurous enough to experiment with AI. We can expect that over the next few years, we’ll see more services, gadgets, and devices that can help us use the technology and integrate it into our workflow and every day lives.

Lay is a concept for a portable AI device that is equipped with a wide-angle camera, a projector, and a sensing module. The 48MP wide-angle camera has a 13mm focal length and is able to recognize objects and space as well as have text recognition and upscale objects it can scan. The 4K UHD projector can project up to 30 inches screen with auto keystone and has under 10cm ultra-short throw distance and high brightness and contrast. The sensing module, which includes LiDAR, ambient light, and proximity sensors, is able to sense its surroundings in real time.

The device basically scans your surroundings and then leverage AI to make suggestions and give assistance on tasks that you can do to as you’re working, drawing, reading, scribbling, building, creating, or just leisurely browsing. It looks like a small spherical robot with a round head that moves around and that you can carry around and place on your desk or space as it helps you make your workflow smoother. It projects onto a surface which will serve as your screen as you do your different tasks. It can recognize and select text, drawings, photos, sketches and then all the content and information are updated in your real-time cloud.

The device still seems to be mostly theoretical and specific tasks you can do or that it can suggest are still a bit vague. But it’s an interesting concept for an AI-powered device that you can carry around with you especially if you’re a digital nomad. And with the speed at which some digital natives and early adapters are using and exploring AI, this can actually be a real device soon.
