Even though a lot of coffee shops offer discounts if you bring your own mug or tumbler when you buy from them, there’s still a lot of disposable plastic cups that go to waste, staying in landfills for decades. Since people will still probably continue using them, we need to find a way to be able to properly recycle of this particular kind of waste.

Loop is a concept for a 3D printer that will be able to do just that. It actually looks like a coffee maker or a water storage device but its function is to actually turn those plastic cups to create scrubbers that can also be used at the cafes. Therefore it really lives up to its name as it creates a sustainable circulation structure.

The 3D printer melts the plastic cups that you put in it by grinding them into small particles. They are heated to turn them into a “soft and malleable state” then cooled to solidify. They are then extruded into the desired filament shapes for printing. The scrubbers can then be used in washing dishes at the cafe.

The suggestion of the product designers is for cafes to use this to incentivize their customers into returning the plastic cups instead of just throwing it. It would be interesting to see if something like this can actually change consumer behavior.

That’s the kind of experience that gpTea, a play on the brewed drink and this type of generative AI, wants to bring in a rather novel way. As a smart tea set, it not only brews tea but even tips the kettle forward to automatically pour the drink into a specially designed cup. Impressive as that may seem, that’s not even its most notable feat.

gpTea’s key feature is actually in interactive storytelling that weaves the responses of friends and family separated by distance and connected only through the Internet using this smart tea set. It asks you how your day went and, depending on your response, it might share a similar story given by another friend or loved one in the past. The more people use it, the bigger and longer the narrative grows. It’s almost like developing an oral tradition or history, except one that’s stored in the memory of an AI.

Another interesting feature of gpTea is the glass cup itself, which has a circular display at the bottom. The AI also generates images related to the story it’s telling, making it feel like you’re using magic to see the scene inside the cup. Admittedly, it’s a rather convoluted and complex way of sharing stories with friends when you can just talk to each other, but it’s still an interesting application of AI that actually tries to build connections between humans who are physically far apart.

Globe-Trotter has made the suitcase worthy of James Bond from vulcanized fiberboard panels, a material first invented in the 1850s, with properties stronger than leather and as light as aluminum. Replicating the DB5’s Silver Birch finish from the iconic movie, the suitcase, on four wheels, has a gloss metallic silver exterior accentuated by black leather trims for the straps and on the corners. Reportedly, the leather corners are molded on Victorian press machines over five days for their form and strength.

A Personal Connection: Pikes Peak and Porsche’s Racing Spirit

In 2016, I was fortunate to experience firsthand Porsche’s racing heritage on a drive I’ll never forget. While scaling Pikes Peak in a Macan GTS, wrapped in liveries designed to reflect Porsche’s racing history, I had the surreal honor of seeing my own name emblazoned on the car. This wasn’t just a typical drive—it was a full immersion into Porsche’s racing spirit, taking me from Pikes Peak to Mount Evans, a journey that pushed the Macan GTS and my own driving skills to their limits.

The livery on the Macan GTS was designed to reflect Porsche’s legacy at Pikes Peak. It’s a vivid reminder of how Porsche integrates its heritage into every aspect of its modern vehicles, creating a sense of continuity between the brand’s past, present, and future. Nike is all set to give fans a reason to spook up the neighborhood this Halloween with the introduction of not one but two eerie edition kicks. Just earlier this month, the Swoosh company took wraps off the Halloweenized model of the Air Force 1 Low, and now we are here with the Nike Dunk Low “Halloween,” offering a frightful take on the court favorite.

Designed with the scary style statement, not specifically for the court alone; the street-smart Dunk Low silhouette captures the spirit of Halloween very nicely with Bright Cactus, Black, and Green Curry colorway, embellishing the cracked leather upper and other unnerving antics of the pair.

Designed for the holiday with its “Halloween” color scheme, the limited-edition Dunk Low Halloween, carries many fan-favorite aspects to give the creeps. First up, the cracked leather upper contrasts with a molded skull motif (with a 3D effect) on the black toe box. The shoe is marked with eye-catching textured black material on its tongue and the laterals while orange laces and the gum soles give the shoes a vintage aesthetic.

The look is completed with a long-molded Swoosh logo appearing in the same color and material as the toe box. This look of the Dunk Low is not very different from the Black and Crimson colorway of the Nike Air Force 1 Low “Halloween” iteration which carries a similar human skull modeled on the toe box. This is not a coincidence; Nike wants the season’s spooky spirit to flow down the customers with the same highlight.

That said, the Dunk Low Halloween is not just tweaked with seasonal appropriateness to blend festive flair with sneaker culture. It has been dealt with all the aspects of the lineup to ensure there is no compromise in comfort. For the interested ones, the Nike Dunk Low Halloween is slated for release on October 26, 2024. It will be available via Nike SNKRS and a few other retailers starting at $130. Nike Air Force 1 Low Halloween will also hit the market around the same time for a starting price of $140.

Singapore is apparently the third most sleep-deprived country in the world and people taking naps in public is a common sight in this Southeast Asian country. IKEA Singapore has come up with a new product for those who may need to take a quick nap while commuting or at other public spaces.

The RESTEN bag looks like the iconic blue FRAKTA bag of IKEA, but this one also doubles as a huggable bag or pillow for those who need a quick nap. The padded design of the bag resembles that of a pillow but keeping the blue color and design of the IKEA reusable bag. It was made with ultra comfortable fabrics and stuffing with enough space to put your daily essentials.

The main appeal of this bag though is that when you’re commuting on a bus or train or studying at the library, it will double as a pillow when you need a quick nap. It also has a strap that has the words “Leave the rest to IKEA” so you can also remember to take a quick break every once in a while.

The RESTEN bag is a limited edition item that will be available at IKEA Singapore branches from September 6-8, 2024 as part of their RestFest event. It would be nice if they can also make this available in other sleep-deprived countries like mine.

Inspired by the designs of Jacques Monneraud, YouTuber Mia Mueller decided to put her skills to the test, making pottery that mimics the delicate, craft-like feel of corrugated cardboard. While Monneraud’s pieces look fantastic (and probably feel just as incredible to hold), Mueller’s approach actually guides us through the process, helping regular-folk understand the nuances of building clay pieces that look like cardboard. Mueller’s YouTube channel, Pottery To The People, is absolute gold for terracotta/ceramic enthusiasts, and although a lot of her content is centric to traditional use of the potter’s wheel, this particular project took a less conventional approach, but yielded results that look genuinely fantastic! Mueller’s attempt at cardboard pottery is a part of her ‘steal like an artist’ video series, where she mimics the styles of pottery artists online. Monneraud’s designs have taken the internet by storm over the last few weeks and it only made sense for Mueller to give it a shot too, to see how easy it was, and whether the resulting pieces were, in fact, functional as pottery goods.

Choosing the right clay was perhaps the most crucial starting step. Different clays take on different hues after firing, so ensuring you’re left with the right cardboard-like color at the end of the firing process is key to nailing that illusion. Mueller used an Indian clay, known for its perfect cardboard-like brown hue.

Once selecting and softening the clay, she took to the potter’s wheel, throwing and shaping the clay in a fairly geometric style. Paper doesn’t bend in complex curves, so Mueller ensured most of her designs had straight lines and sharp edges. Ridges were then ‘stamped’ with the corrugated design, and details like grips, handles, and spouts were given a ridged design using a set of specialized roller-pins with ridges on them.

A few keys to nailing the aesthetic were ensuring the clay dries out significantly before stamping details onto them. Paper isn’t seamless either, so each paper part had to have a distinct start and end, which meant not blending in the edge lines. Even when joining multiple parts together, it’s instinctive to blend them in, making sure the joint is strong. However, cardboard doesn’t ‘blend’ either, so edges where different parts joined had to be left unblended, allowing the edge-line to show. Sure, this results in a fairly weak end-product, but then again, this entire endeavor is an aesthetic-driven one, not a functionality-driven one. The resulting pots are great for looking at, maybe even using as bouquet holders, but aren’t meant for holding water or any liquid. Since they’re unglazed, they’re still incredibly porous and will absorb water too, which means it’s best left displayed on a shelf as a statement piece rather than being put to use.

I’m a coffee buff but have a limited sense of good coffee. A simple machine keeps me satisfied but a nice brew at a café really tells the difference. I wouldn’t say I’m going to translate into someone keen on brewing specialty coffee at home anytime soon. But if you’ve been yearning for barista-level precision and control over your cup of coffee, you can settle for the new Breville Oracle Jet, which is now available in the US.

A keen coffee machine that can produce hot or cold-press espresso, most of it automatically, the Oracle Jet is Australia-based Breville’s first-of-its-kind option on the market. From how it appears, it’s an impressive coffee machine with a brushed stainless steel finish (available in a range of exclusive colors) featuring a touchscreen display that would let you control it in most cases. Interesting however is the fact that the intuitive machine automatically does the grinding, dosing, and tamping to eliminate the human intervention, yet enhancing the brew quality in return.

What really distinguishes Breville’s new entrant in the world of specialty brewing at home concept is its ability to brew perfect cold espresso drinks. In fact, it’s the first in the Breville’s portfolio that makes cold brew but then the price of the machines really makes me skip a beat. Not that I was going to make an effort to secure finances for purchase, but $2000 for the coffee machine will have many like me deterred and setting in return for a regular drip coffee maker.

This doesn’t at all mean that the Oracle Jet does not have its mouth where the money is. Of course, the price is nothing for a good shot of cold brew espresso that this machine has been designed and manufactured to achieve with little to no effort. A definitely lift up of your stature from a barista visitor to a full-blown coffee specialist at home!

As an auto cold-brew espresso machine, it requires a bit of doing to install it and get the beans and water calibrated. Thereafter the process is pretty automatic and straight-forward. The touchscreen panel onboard is where all the controls are for you to set the grind size, switch between hot and cold brew or add your choice of milk to the coffee. The controls on the screen are generated with the tech-based ‘barista guidance,” and the machine helps execute the moves to brew you a perfect temperature espresso every time of the day.

What are Succulents?

Succulents, known for storing water in their leaves, often have thick foliage, though the thickness varies among species. They thrive in dry climates and dislike high humidity. Proper watering is key for growth and flowering, as they can withstand drought by using stored water and nutrients but may rot if overwatered. Most prefer warmth and can’t survive freezing temperatures, which can lead to damage or decay. While some tolerate freezing to an extent, they still prefer warmth. Changes in temperature, water, or sunlight can alter their color, with some “blushing” or changing hues in response to increased sunlight.

1. Jade Plant (crassula ovata)

Like a bonsai, the jade plant features a thick trunk and branch structure resembling a miniature tree. Its glossy, dark green leaves grow oval, with some varieties displaying a reddish tint at the leaf tips. Under suitable conditions, mature jade plants may bloom beautiful white or pink star-shaped flowers.

The Heineken bottles are usually made of glass, a versatile and long-lasting material. Glass can be easily cleaned and reused, making it an unfortunate choice as a one-time disposable item. This inherent durability and adaptability of glass allow it to be molded and designed into a variety of household items and even wearables, showcasing its potential beyond single use.

The Waste-to-Wear collection is an extension of Heineken South Africa’s Fields Green With Grass, Not Glass initiative. This project aims to tackle two critical issues: reducing environmental impact and enhancing urban aesthetics. By repurposing broken glass “hotspots,” the initiative not only beautifies urban areas but also addresses the ecological consequences of discarded glass bottles.

In collaboration with the creative agency Sonic State, Heineken has repurposed bottles collected from these hotspots into a range of stunning items. These include 3,000 rings, 3,000 medallions, and a unique collection of homeware, such as dinner sets and a hops-inspired pendant light. The Marble Queen Pothos plant, for example, is notable for being quite effective while still being suitable as a houseplant. It’s still not enough, though, considering how many VOCs there are in the air we breathe indoors, so science, specifically biotechnology, is ready to lend a helping hand. Or tiny microscopic hands in this case.

The Neo PX utilizes a bioengineered microbiome that contains the evolution of two bacteria specifically designed to break down pollutants such as Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene, collectively referred to as BTX, into substances like sugars and proteins that are beneficial to the growth of a plant. These bacteria are dried up and packaged as “Power Drops” that are dissolved in water and then poured into the soil of the house plant. Not only do these microorganisms help remove the VOCs from the air, they also transform them into nutrients for the Marble Queen Pothos plant growing from it.

Even the plant pot itself, the third part of the Neo PX system, is specially designed to facilitate this process. Unlike a typical pot, it has vents at the bottom and an internal structure that facilitates airflow, bringing the dirty air into the bacteria-enriched soil to enhance the plant’s root growth. It also incorporates a simple self-watering system so that you only need to refill the water reservoir once every three weeks during winter or once every two weeks in summer.

The best part of this system is that it doesn’t require any electricity or chemicals to function. The shell of the pot itself is made from eco-friendly PLA Flax derived from renewable and biodegradable materials. There are no fans for sucking up and blowing out air, so you don’t have to worry about charging anything or keeping it near a wall socket. Neo PX is definitely an interesting air purifying solution that also adds to the aesthetic of a room with its minimalist design and lush green foliage, keeping your air clean while also helping to keep the planet alive.

The number of coffee chains spread around the world is undeniable proof of how much people desire or even thrive on the beverage. Unfortunately, that number is also an indirect testament to the waste that the industry produces, especially when it comes to to-go cups. The majority of these cups are made of plastic, though some brands and consumers are becoming wiser and opting for more sustainable drinkware. The problem, however, is when you need to carry more than one of these cups, usually in precarious trays or bags. A paper cup design concept tries to hit two birds with one stone, offering not only a more sustainable cup but a better way to hold and carry them.

Although iced coffee to go is still usually served in plastic containers, unless you bring your own reusable cup, the more common hot beverage is thankfully put in paper cups with cardboard sleeves. Their designs are simple and handy for holding in one hand, but some people have the unfortunate task of buying for a group. Some stores offer cardboard trays or boxes for carrying two or four drinks at once, though some have to resort to bags that could let the coffee spill as you swing it while walking.

Neither are ideal solutions, especially for long-term use or reusable cups, so someone thankfully thought of a better and admittedly more aesthetic solution to this common problem. It doesn’t have a formal name yet, but the Accordion Paper Cup design offers a simple yet ingenious way not just to carry coffee paper cups but also to hold one in your hand. In a nutshell, the paper cup has a sleeve that expands upward, turning it into a bag of sorts.

The trick to this sleeve design is the accordion-like structure can easily expand and contract without changing its total mass. This same structure happens to also be a good insulator against heat, allowing you to wrap your hand around a hot cup. It might not be an intentional part of the design, but the alternating pattern of holes and divisions also makes it easier to grip an otherwise smooth and slippery cup.

The paper cup and its innovative sleeve are allegedly made of recyclable, renewable, and biodegradable materials, further driving home the idea of an all-in-one sustainable solution for to-go cups. But while the cup itself seems to have that brown hue typically associated with recycled paper products, the sleeve has a gradient that softly shifts from blue to brown, though other colors are also possible. Unfortunately, there is no word on whether this concept has any chance of becoming an actual product, but it’s definitely an interesting avenue to consider for large coffee chains.
