Sport Climbing Meets Design: The Playful Hanger for Active Homes

Par : JC Torres
20 janvier 2025 à 11:07

Inspiration often emerges from unexpected sources. A walk in a forest can have you stumbling on fungi that become the inspiration for a new kind of sustainable material. Watching a crowded concert could give you an idea for the next big social media app. Those “aha!” moments often lead to interesting designs, even for the most mundane household items.

One such innovative fusion is the Grip Hanger, a clothes rack that draws its design from the unique forms found on sport climbing walls. These walls mimic the natural rock formations climbers encounter, yet they are crafted with intentional shapes to enhance grip practice and skill development. It’s almost a very loose and random association between two uses of the word “hang,” and yet it yields quite a stunning implementation that can add a bit of joy to your everyday life.

Designer: Junho Kang

Unlike the randomness of natural rocks, the holds on climbing walls are meticulously designed to challenge and train climbers. The Grip Hanger cleverly incorporates this concept, with its “Hold” component mirroring the playful shapes of climbing holds. Their seemingly deformed shapes hide a deeper meaning to them, something you might not realize unless you take a closer look.

This whimsical design gives the hanger itself a distinctive personality, Its hook mimics the way climbers’ hands grasp these holds, with thin metal fingers trying to grip those stone-like holds. This subtle design adds a touch of sport climbing flair to any room, or at least makes you pause and wonder why a hanger would look that way.

Constructed from bent sheet metal, the clothes rack itself mirrors the angular, rugged aesthetic of artificial climbing walls. Its raw, brutalist design speaks to the architectural style often seen in urban landscapes, making it a bold statement piece. This edgy design goes beyond mere looks and provides sturdy support and a unique visual appeal that catches the eye.

The Grip Hanger stands out with its modular functionality, featuring perforations that allow for the attachment of detachable shelves. This adaptability makes it not only a stylish addition but also a practical solution for organizing clothes and accessories. The design invites users to think creatively, transforming a simple clothes rack into an engaging, interactive piece of home decor.

This innovative design challenges the conventional view of everyday objects, infusing them with creativity and fun. The Grip Hanger encourages us to look beyond traditional designs and embrace the unexpected, turning a mundane item into something extraordinary. Its playful yet functional approach serves as a reminder that inspiration can be found anywhere, even in the most unexpected places.

It also demonstrates how anything can be a source of inspiration and ideas, even the ones you least expect. Its blend of sport climbing elements and practical functionality makes it a standout piece, adding character and charm to any space. The Grip Hanger is a testament to the endless possibilities that arise when creativity meets everyday utility.

Camal Studio’s Scoperta is a desirable Barchetta inspired by the classic Caterham

Par : Gaurav Sood

Ever since the Caterham launched in the early 1970s, the hip roadster has been popular with motorheads who love the thrill of driving and the wind in their hair. The current model Caterham Super 7 has not changed much from the original in terms of looks and that can be a boring side of evolution.

Camal Studio, the Italian design company that’s renowned for its sublime creations like the world’s first hyperlimousine has derived inspiration from the Caterham and the sports cars of the 50s and 60s to come up with the renders of an open-top sports car. Dubbed Scoperta, the sexy barchetta binds a timeless aesthetic with modern elements any car enthusiast will find hard to resist.

Designer: Camal Design Studio

The performance car weighing just 1,235 pounds is based on the Caterham Seven 485 platform. The hunk is powered by a 2.0-liter Ford Duratec engine churning out 240 horsepower to complement the bold looks. The design team at Camal has given the car a front half with a big clamshell-styled hood that is identified by its curvacious magnetism and subdued creases. This is exemplified further by the front splitter and large grille that are head turners. The flowing aerodynamic shape flows to the sides contrasted by the classic mirrors and side exhausts. Move to the rear and you have a bespoke decklid housing the spare wheel and contoured tail embellished with sleek LED taillights.

On the inside, the Scoperta cocoons the riders in an elliptical cabin that has a single panel flowing over the dashboard. The speedometer and tachometer are positioned horizontally in this section. What I love to the core is a three-spoke steering wheel having a five-speed gated manual shifter. The headrests also have their distinctive curvaceous shape for a sense of security. Other modifications on the inside include a carbon fiber roll bar for driving safety.

This stunning barrechta is yet to go beyond the concept stage but Camal Studio reassures a limited series production for homologated road legal driving could be a possibility in the future. When it does arrive, the car will cost around $159,000. Whether the cost is inclusive of the donor car is not yet clear, however, this price tag will make it one of the costliest Caterham to ever hit the road.

Nike Grind Dumbbells use recycled rubber from footwear byproduct

Par : JC Torres
17 octobre 2024 à 13:20

Of the many pieces of clothing we buy and use, shoes are probably the ones designed to last the longest. Because of that, footwear is usually made using materials that are durable and long-lasting but are also unfortunately often not environment-friendly. Rubber, particularly synthetic rubber, is one of the biggest culprits, not just in terms of post-consumer waste but even material waste during the manufacturing process. As one of the biggest footwear makers, Nike is thankfully taking a responsible stance, giving those rubber byproducts and excess materials a new purpose.

Designer: Nike

Although natural rubber is sourced from plants, it’s not that easy to replenish to meet the high demand for the material. Just like plastic, synthetic rubber is easy to manufacture but also harmful the environment due to their chemical content. Rubber from discarded shoes is one thing, but even the bits and pieces of cutoffs and scraps produced when making them also pose a threat to the environment.

Considering its lion’s share of the sports shoes market, Nike developed the Grind material that recycles manufacturing byproducts like rubber, foam, and even textiles to create a material that can be applied to products other than shoes. In this case, the Nike Grind Dumbbells are made with at least 20% Nike Grind material to offer an alternative fitness tool for environment-conscious consumers.

In addition to its sustainable value, the recycled material also gives the dumbbells a unique aesthetic. The hexagonal weights themselves have a light gray hue sprinkled with colorful specs that create a terrazzo-like appearance. Each dumbbell is, thus, totally unique, and the mixture of colors will vary from season to season, depending on the styles of footwear that Nike launches.

The gray motif of the weights perfectly complements the chrome-plated knurled handles. The handle diameter varies depending on the weight, increasing as the load gets heavier to provide a more ergonomic grip. Available in weights ranging from 2.5 lbs to 50 lbs, the Nike Grind Dumbbell offers people a fitness tool that not only takes care of their health but also the environment.

Swiss sportswear innovator On has teamed up with tennis icon Roger Federer to launch the ultimate collector’s item—a pair of tennis shoes infused with a string from Federer’s very own 2005 Wimbledon-winning racket.

Designer: On x Roger Federer

And if you’re wondering just how rare these are, well—only three pairs exist. That’s right, just three. Each comes accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Federer himself, making it one of the most unique collectibles to surface from the world of tennis.

A Unique Opportunity for Tennis Fans Worldwide

To celebrate Federer’s incredible achievements, On is giving fans the opportunity to win one of these extremely limited edition pairs. But you’ll have to move fast: there’s a strict deadline of 3.59 pm CET on October 9th to enter the raffle. The winners will be announced during the week of October 14th. And yes, it’s a raffle, which means anyone can have a chance to win—if luck is on their side.

To enter, head to On’s official website and submit your details before the countdown expires. It’s a straightforward way for a chance to own a piece of Federer’s history, and it’s sure to generate a buzz in the tennis community. Federer’s career has always been about grace and precision, and the fact that he’s shared a piece of that history within these shoes makes them nothing short of iconic.

Craftsmanship Meets Legacy

So, what makes these shoes unique? On and Roger Federer has pulled out all the stops to ensure THE ROGER Pro: Strings Attached is an exceptional offering. Let’s take a closer look at the shoe’s features:

  • Real String from the 2005 Winning Racket: What truly sets these sneakers apart is the inclusion of a genuine string taken from Federer’s 2005 Wimbledon-winning racket. It’s an intimate touch that turns each shoe into a narrative of victory.
  • Lightweight Design: At just 407 grams, these shoes are designed to glide across the court, making them ideal for serious tennis players who want speed without sacrificing comfort.
  • Carbon Fiber Speedboard: The 100% carbon fiber Speedboard delivers a boost of energy return with every step, propelling players forward and offering unmatched responsiveness.
  • Specially Designed Tread: The outsole tread has been designed to provide impeccable grip while maintaining enough glide for smooth, efficient footwork on the court.
  • Midfoot Cage for Stability: A midfoot cage gives players extra security, ensuring a snug fit that keeps you locked in even during aggressive side-to-side movements.

And if all that isn’t enough, each pair comes with a certificate signed by Roger himself, giving an additional layer of authenticity and making these shoes even more desirable for collectors.

The Look—A Nod to Federer’s Style

The sneaker itself is an ode to Federer’s classic, understated style. Featuring a predominantly white design with subtle black and red accents, the shoe’s clean lines are reminiscent of Federer’s own approach on the court—elegant, precise, and flawless. The stitching and the lacing system seem to mimic the strings of a racket, creating a visual connection between the sport and the shoe.

The material choice, including a breathable mesh upper and a cushioned heel, strikes a balance between performance and comfort. The red detailing, reminiscent of Federer’s iconic headbands and wristbands, adds just the right amount of flair to an otherwise minimalist aesthetic.

Oh, and if you look closely at Federer’s wrist during the promotional shoot, you’ll spot a familiar glimmer: a Rolex GMT-Master II, affectionately known as the ‘Batman’ due to its striking blue and black bezel. Personally, I would have worn the ‘Pepsi‘ instead—the red on the bezel is more fitting than the blue. It’s a subtle reminder that Federer’s style goes beyond tennis and reaches into timeless luxury.

The Countdown is On

With just 48 hours left to enter, tennis enthusiasts must grab their chance. This is about owning a piece of the Federer legacy, a moment from one of the sport’s most celebrated champions. Whether you’re a seasoned player looking for an edge or simply an admirer of Federer’s incredible journey, this shoe symbolizes an irreplaceable part of tennis history.

If you’re ready to enter the raffle, head to On’s website and put your name in the hat. Who knows, you might just be one of the lucky few to lace up in Federer’s greatness. But hurry—you only have until October 9th to make it happen.

Award-Winning Sports Complex boasts a Badminton Racquet-inspired Grid Roof with Solar Panels

Par : Tanvi Joshi
30 septembre 2024 à 19:15

In a stunning fusion of sport, sustainability, and striking design, MVRDV and Huayi Design have won the competition to create The Sweet Spot, a world-class sports complex in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district. Far from your average facility, this vibrant complex will house China’s National Badminton Training Centre, a public fitness hub, and a variety of commercial spaces. With an iconic rooftop shaped like the head of a badminton racket, The Sweet Spot is more than a nod to badminton, it’s a full-blown celebration of the sport and an architectural marvel in its own right.

Designer: MVRDV and Huayi Design

The Sweet Spot makes a bold statement before you even set foot inside. Towering over the complex is a 240-meter-long roof that mirrors the head of a badminton racket, complete with a grid-like structure resembling racket strings. This isn’t just for show: the roof is equipped with solar panels, generating clean energy for the complex. It’s a masterstroke of design that combines sustainability with visual impact, a perfect reflection of MVRDV’s commitment to eco-friendly architecture.

Jacob van Rijs, founding partner at MVRDV, puts it best: “The Sweet Spot isn’t just about creating a space for sport, it’s about celebrating badminton in a way that’s fun, accessible, and environmentally conscious. We’re thrilled to have hit the winning shot with this design!”

At the heart of the complex is a dynamic space where athletes and the public seamlessly coexist. The main building, which houses a professional arena and training courts, is linked by a T-shaped promenade that invites everyone to explore the facilities. This promenade leads to a central plaza, aptly named the sweet spot, designed to reflect the perfect hitting point on a badminton racket. It’s a playful yet fitting metaphor for the spirit of the project.

For athletes, privacy is a priority. Beneath the public promenade lies a lower ground level that connects the training spaces and arena, allowing athletes to move discreetly without mingling with the public. It’s a clever solution that balances public engagement with the specialized needs of professional sportspeople.

But the badminton-themed surprises don’t stop there. To the south of the arena, a striking 23-story tower tapers like a shuttlecock, housing hotel rooms on the lower levels and short-stay apartments for athletes above. This iconic tower is more than just an architectural statement, it’s designed with athletes’ privacy and convenience in mind, offering direct access to the private lower ground floor.

On the other side of the complex, two smaller commercial buildings echo the racket shape of the main arena, tying the whole design together with visual harmony. These buildings will serve visitors, creating a lively and cohesive atmosphere.

The sweet spot isn’t just a haven for professional athletes, it’s a gift to the people of Shenzhen. The park surrounding the complex features courts for badminton, basketball, and football, open to everyone from casual players to serious competitors. The west side boasts a massive stepped tribune where spectators can watch matches or just take in the surroundings, making the park as much a social hub as a sports venue.

A separate National Fitness Centre offers even more opportunities for exercise, housing additional badminton and tennis courts as well as a swimming center. With so many options, it’s clear that this complex isn’t just about elite athletes, it’s designed to foster a love for sport across the entire community.

One of the most exciting aspects of The Sweet Spot is how it extends beyond its original scope. MVRDV saw potential in the space beneath the nearby Pingyan Expressway flyover, transforming what could have been a forgotten stretch of land into a vibrant green corridor. Complete with a skate park, basketball courts, a running track, and a playground, this extension seamlessly connects The Sweet Spot to the larger Pingshan community, making the complex an even more integral part of the city.

Finally, The Sweet Spot relies on clean energy to operate, pointing at a strong sustainability bid. The solar-powered roof generates much of the energy needed to run the complex, and the design as a whole prioritizes energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. By integrating photovoltaic panels into the design of the badminton-racket-shaped roof, MVRDV has ensured that this isn’t just a sports complex of the present, it’s one being built for the future.

MVRDV and Huayi Design’s The Sweet Spot is an experience. With its playful badminton theme, athlete-first design, community-centered amenities, and a strong commitment to sustainability, this complex redefines what a sports facility can be. It’s a bold, energetic, and forward-thinking project that will leave a lasting impact on Shenzhen and beyond.

What Are Super Shoes? Exploring the Design and Technology Behind Nike’s Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

29 septembre 2024 à 17:20

Super shoes have become a key talking point in the running world, promising to improve performance and efficiency. These shoes are engineered to help runners go faster with less effort, thanks to innovative materials and construction. But what exactly qualifies as a “super shoe,” and how do they compare with regular running shoes? Let’s dive into what defines super shoes and how Nike’s Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP fits into this category.

Designer: Nike

Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

Super shoes are distinct from traditional running shoes due to their combination of ultra-light materials, responsive cushioning, and a carbon fiber plate embedded in the midsole. This design creates a spring-like effect, helping runners propel forward with less energy spent per stride. The foam used in these shoes is engineered for high energy return, meaning that when your foot hits the ground, the shoe gives you a lift-off sensation. For runners looking to improve their race times, super shoes offer an advantage in both efficiency and speed.

In contrast, regular running shoes prioritize comfort, support, and durability for daily training. They focus on protecting your foot from impact and offer cushioning for long-term use, but they don’t have the same energy-boosting properties as super shoes. Instead, regular shoes use denser, heavier materials that absorb shock but lack the responsive boost found in super shoes.

The Design of Super Shoes: Nike’s Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

The main design difference in super shoes is their focus on making each step more efficient. Nike’s Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP, a collaboration with Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER, is a prime example of performance technology combined with creative design.

The shoe features a translucent upper that gives it a unique look and reduces weight. The upper is lightweight and breathable and provides a snug fit without the bulk of traditional materials, making it a practical part of the shoe’s performance-driven design. The reflective elements improve visibility during low-light runs, adding practicality to the design.

Nike’s Lunarlon cushioning absorbs impact while maintaining the bounce needed for long-distance running. The carbon-infused nylon plate in the midsole adds stiffness and responsiveness, providing smooth transitions from heel to toe and giving you that extra push during runs.

Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

Jun Takahashi’s influence is evident in the design and Gyakusou graphics. The shoe is built to perform well while offering a unique style for runners who appreciate function and design.

Key Elements of the Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

When I first tried the Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP, I was struck by its lightweight and thoughtfully designed design. These shoes are engineered for performance and tell a story through their design. I quickly purchased both pairs before they sold out, and they’ve become a regular part of my running kit ever since.

The translucent upper gives the shoe a sleek, barely-there feel while keeping it breathable. The reflective detailing adds a practical safety feature for night runs. But the combination of Lunarlon cushioning and the carbon-infused nylon plate sets these shoes apart. With each step, the plate propels you forward, offering that extra boost when needed.

The Gyakusou graphics reflect Jun Takahashi’s vision of blending fashion and function. These shoes inspire confidence with bold design choices that work just as hard as the performance features.

Real-World Test: Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP in Action

When I first saw the Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP, I was instantly drawn to its unique design and lightweight feel. I immediately fell in love with them and bought them without realizing they were classified as “super shoes.”

Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP

After hitting the pavement in them, it became clear these shoes perform as well as they’re designed to. The lightweight materials felt seamless, almost like an extension of my foot. The carbon-infused nylon plate made a noticeable difference, providing an extra push with each step, especially during long runs when maintaining pace can be challenging.

The Lunarlon cushioning kept my feet comfortable even over longer distances, offering the right balance of support without feeling too soft. There’s an adjustment period if you’re used to traditional trainers, but once you get used to the feel, the energy return feels like a natural part of your stride.

And you don’t need to be a competitive runner to enjoy super shoes. I travel frequently and often find myself sprinting through airports from gate to gate. In cities like Tokyo, Barcelona, and Berlin, where walking and public transit are common, the Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP has become my go-to travel companion. Beyond comfort, they’re also lightweight enough to pack as a second pair of shoes. Whether navigating crowded terminals or getting around new cities, these shoes make travel easier.

The Nike Gyakusou Zoom Fly SP is built for runners seeking performance and style. With its lightweight design, responsive plate, and carefully thought-out details, these shoes are perfect for anyone looking to elevate their running experience. Whether aiming for a faster time or wanting a unique design that performs, these shoes do the job well without compromising comfort or aesthetic appeal.

EDITOR'S QUOTE:

The Onewheel Pint X delivers thrilling rides and great range but make sure its features fit your riding needs and style.

Looking for a thrilling way to navigate city streets or explore your local park? The Onewheel Pint X offers a compelling mix of excitement and practicality in personal electric vehicles. With its sleek design and robust performance, the Pint X is perfect for urban commuters and adventure enthusiasts. I was intrigued by the Onewheel experience, and the Pint X delivered the enhancements I sought, providing impressive speed and range for longer rides without frequent stops for charging. With a powerful 750W Hypercore motor that propels you up to 18 mph, this board offers a ride reminiscent of snowboarding or longboarding, making it an enticing lifestyle choice rather than just a means of transportation. If you’re ready to dive into the world of electric mobility and experience the freedom it offers, the Onewheel Pint X might be your ideal ride.

Designer: Kyle Doerksen + Onewheel

Design and Aesthetics

The Onewheel Pint X combines sleek, modern design with functionality, making it an attractive option for those seeking a stylish and portable personal electric vehicle. With dimensions of 8.75 x 10.5 x 27 inches and weighing 27 pounds, the board is compact yet robust, offering easy maneuverability in urban settings. Its minimalist aesthetic with vibrant color options lets riders express personal style while maintaining a polished look.

The integrated Lightbar on the footpad enhances the board’s futuristic design and provides practical functionality, serving as both a battery indicator and a riding alert. This thoughtful design emphasizes simplicity and ease of use, housing all components compactly while maintaining a streamlined appearance. The low center of gravity and wide tire offer excellent stability and control, making the Pint X adaptable to various terrains.

The Pint X’s design also pays homage to the original Onewheel concept while incorporating modern enhancements that cater to today’s riders. The robust aluminum frame ensures durability, while customizable color options for the bumpers and rails let riders personalize their boards to match their style. The pint-sized form factor of the Pint X doesn’t just make it easier to store and transport; it also gives it a playful, approachable aesthetic that invites riders of all levels to give it a try.

2008: Onewheel prototype 1: The first rideable prototype had a chain-driven motor and the bare essentials. Old Iron Sides is now its affectionate nickname.

Ergonomics

The Onewheel Pint X is designed with rider comfort and usability in mind, featuring a built-in Maghandle for easy carrying when not in use. This feature makes the board convenient to transport in crowded areas or up flights of stairs. Riding the Onewheel is the most fun I’ve had since my teens, popping wheelies on my BMX bike. While there is a learning curve, many new riders find it manageable with practice. The board’s intuitive control system uses pressure-sensitive footpads for smooth acceleration and braking, mimicking natural movements. At the heart of this system is a combination of sensors, including a Hall Effect sensor and an accelerometer. These sensors interpret your body’s movements and translate them into seamless control, making the ride feel intuitive and responsive. This allows riders to accelerate by leaning forward and decelerate by leaning back, creating a natural and engaging riding experience.

For beginners, the Simple Stop feature is particularly beneficial. It allows the rider to come to a gradual stop by leaning back, reducing the risk of falls and helping build confidence. The wide tire is surprisingly responsive, allowing for nimble turns and adjustments to posture. Riders are advised to start practicing in open areas like parking lots or grassy fields and to wear shoes with good grip for better control and stability. Regular practice helps strengthen stabilizer muscles, making rides smoother and more comfortable over time.

Performance

Curiosity about the Onewheel experience led me to try out the Pint X, which promised enhancements in speed and range. The Pint X offers a perfect balance between power and agility, making it an exciting upgrade. With a 750W Hypercore motor, the board reaches a top speed of 18 mph, providing a thrilling ride whether commuting through the city or exploring parks. The range of 12 to 18 miles on a single charge is a significant improvement, allowing for longer adventures without constant recharging.

Riding the Pint X feels liberating, as the increased speed and range mean I no longer need to plan my routes meticulously or worry about running out of battery mid-ride. The powerful motor also delivers extra torque, making the board more responsive when changing directions. The Onewheel relies on a rate gyroscope, which helps maintain balance by measuring orientation and angle changes. This technology ensures stability even as you navigate challenging terrains, making it easier to learn and control. While initially a bit “squirrely,” the wide tire quickly becomes second nature, allowing for smooth and agile turns.

The Onewheel Pint X features four customizable riding modes, or Digital Shaping modes, that can be adjusted through the Onewheel app to match your riding style:

Redwood: Offers a smooth ride with a top speed of approximately 12 mph, ideal for leisurely rides and where I felt most comfortable starting as a beginner.

Pacific X: A relaxed mode that balances speed and control, quickly becoming my second favorite, making it easy to handle for a more casual experience.
Elevated X: Raises the front of the board, helping you tackle steep inclines or perform tricks with greater ease.
Skyline X: A responsive mode with a maximum speed of about 18 mph, providing an adrenaline-pumping experience.

From the moment I started riding, the Pint X’s performance was apparent. The speed and handling capabilities offered an adrenaline rush with every ride, making it easy to lose track of time while exploring. The improved range means I can focus on the ride rather than constantly checking the battery level.

However, the performance improvements come with a few trade-offs. The thicker front bumper, intended for symmetry, sometimes drags during sharp turns or when recovering from drops. It reduces ground clearance, causing occasional nosedives and making curb navigation tricky. The extra weight of the board, while not drastic, does impact its agility, making it feel less snappy during tight turns. The shared tire with the regular Pint feels less secure at higher speeds, requiring constant vigilance to avoid bumps and obstacles that could cause a wipeout.

Specifications

Dimensions: 8.75 x 10.5 x 27 inches
Weight: 27 lbs
Battery: 324Wh capacity, 63V
Charge time: Approximately 225 minutes with a standard charger, 110 minutes with an Ultracharger
Tire: 10.5 x 4.5-6 inches, round profile
Top Speed: 18 mph
Range: 12-18 miles, depending on riding conditions
Price: Starting at $1,100

Sustainability

While sustainability isn’t heavily marketed, the Pint X is built with durability in mind, using high-quality materials to ensure longevity. This reduces the need for frequent replacements, supporting a more sustainable approach to personal transportation. Manufactured in the U.S., the Pint X aligns with sustainable practices by ensuring quality control and minimizing the carbon footprint associated with overseas shipping.

Value and Verdict

At the time of this review, the Onewheel Pint X is available at a starting price of $1,100, making it a more accessible option in the electric skateboard market. Despite this competitive price, the board offers exceptional performance, durability, and versatility. The Pint X has become a staple for many riders, providing a blend of speed, range, and portability that’s difficult to find elsewhere.

The Pint X offers a compelling package for those seeking an exhilarating ride experience. The powerful hub motor allows riders to glide through traffic with ease, while the electric transmission system eliminates the need for gear shifting. The wide deck provides excellent traction and stability, securely holding the rider’s feet in place, whether navigating sharp turns, tackling hills or speeding along sidewalks. The puncture-resistant liner on the wheel enhances safety, making it a reliable choice for long-distance travel on rough trails.

However, potential buyers should be aware of a few considerations. The Pint X is not waterproof, so exposure to water can damage the battery and affect motor functionality. The fixed acceleration might be too intense for some users who prefer customizable speed settings. Additionally, while competitively priced, the Pint X still represents a significant investment compared to other e-boards with similar features.

Is the Onewheel Pint X the right fit for you? If you’re looking to embrace the thrill of one-wheel riding while enjoying the convenience and innovation that the board offers, it could be an excellent choice. We’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with the Pint X. With its thoughtful design, ergonomic comfort, and impressive performance, it remains a top choice in the personal electric vehicle market. Share your insights and join the conversation about this exciting rideable!

The Enduring Legacy of the Adidas Samba: A Synthesis of Style, Sport, and Innovation

4 août 2024 à 17:20

Welcome to Sneakers Sunday at Yanko Design. Today, we explore the storied evolution of the Adidas Samba. Originally designed in 1950, this iconic shoe has served athletes with its functional design while also becoming a staple in global fashion and culture. The Samba’s journey from a functional soccer shoe to a fashion icon offers a fascinating look at how design can adapt to changing times while retaining its core essence.

Designer: Adi Dassler + ADIDAS

Origins and Early Design

The Samba was born out of necessity in post-war Germany, where harsh winters created challenging conditions for soccer players. Adi Dassler, the founder of Adidas, recognized the need for a shoe that could offer traction on icy surfaces. His solution was the Samba, a shoe that featured a revolutionary gum rubber sole providing superior grip and traction. This innovation set Samba apart from other athletic footwear and marked the beginning of its iconic status.

Alongside its functional sole, the Samba boasted a durable leather upper with Adidas’s signature three stripes, adding structural integrity and visual appeal. This combination of practicality and style made the Samba an instant hit on and off the field. The initial design laid the foundation for a versatile shoe that could transition seamlessly from sports to fashion.

The early Samba models also included a high-top variant, which offered additional ankle support and warmth, making it particularly popular in colder climates. This version retained the classic elements of the original while providing an added layer of functionality, broadening the shoe’s appeal beyond the athletic community. The high-top Samba was especially favored by soccer players who needed extra protection during harsh weather, demonstrating Adidas’s commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its customers.

Evolution Through the Decades

As the decades passed, the Samba underwent significant transformations to keep pace with changing trends and consumer preferences. In the 1960s and 1970s, Adidas began experimenting with new materials and colorways to expand the Samba’s appeal beyond its original sports market. The introduction of softer leathers and synthetic fabrics enhanced the shoe’s comfort and durability, making it more suitable for casual wear.

This period also saw the Samba embracing a broader color palette, moving beyond the traditional black and white to include a variety of vibrant hues and patterns. These changes reflected the growing influence of fashion on athletic footwear, as consumers increasingly sought shoes that combined performance with personal style. The Samba’s ability to adapt to these shifts while retaining its core design elements cemented its status as a timeless classic.

In addition to material innovations, the Samba’s design also evolved to reflect the changing needs of its audience. The high-top version, for instance, gained popularity in urban settings, where its stylish silhouette and practical features made it a favorite among fashion-forward individuals. This adaptability helped the Samba maintain its relevance in a rapidly changing market as it continued to capture the imagination of new generations.

Cultural Impact and Global Reach

The Samba’s appeal extended far beyond the soccer field, becoming a symbol of youth and rebellion across the globe. In the 1980s, the shoe was embraced by various subcultures, from hip-hop enthusiasts to skaters, each group adding its own chapter to the Samba’s rich history. Its simple yet striking design made it a popular choice for those looking to make a statement, whether on the dance floor or the streets.

This widespread adoption across diverse cultures and continents underscored the Samba’s universal appeal. Its ability to transcend boundaries and resonate with people from all walks of life highlighted its versatility and timeless charm. The Samba maintained its identity while adapting to myriad personal styles, whether paired with jeans and a T-shirt or more formal attire.

The Samba’s influence also extended to the music and entertainment world, where it became a fixture in popular culture. Celebrities and musicians alike were drawn to the shoe’s unique blend of functionality and fashion, further solidifying its status as an icon. The Samba’s presence in films, music videos, and on the feet of influential figures helped cement its place in the cultural zeitgeist, ensuring its continued relevance in the ever-evolving fashion world.

Recent Collaborations and Innovations

In recent years, Adidas has leveraged collaborations to keep the Samba at the forefront of the fashion industry. Partnerships with designers and fashion houses have introduced new versions of the shoe that maintain its classic elements while incorporating modern design trends and materials. These collaborations have breathed new life into the Samba, attracting a new generation of fans and reinforcing its status as a fashion icon.

One notable collaboration is with Copenhagen-based fashion brand Naked, which reimagined the Samba with intricate lace details and soft, pastel overlays. This partnership highlights the sneaker’s adaptability to current fashion trends and ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design elements. These limited-edition models incorporate luxurious materials and subtle design tweaks, such as co-branded tongues and custom lace tags, making each release a collectible piece.

Adidas has also focused on sustainability, integrating eco-friendly materials into the Samba’s design. This commitment ensures the shoe remains popular among environmentally conscious consumers without sacrificing style or quality. By embracing sustainable practices and innovative materials, Adidas is preserving the Samba’s legacy and paving the way for future generations of this iconic shoe.

The Adidas Samba’s journey from a functional sports shoe to a cultural icon is a testament to its timeless design and enduring appeal. Its continuous adaptation and relevance in the sneaker industry testify to its lasting legacy and broad appeal. As we look to the future, the Samba will continue to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide, cementing its place in the annals of sneaker history.

Nike self-lacing sneakers are losing their app and their biggest value

Par : JC Torres
8 juillet 2024 à 10:07

Ever since Marty McFly first showed off the idea of self-tying shoelaces in Back to the Future, the footwear industry has been trying to figure out how to turn that fantasy into a reality. As the brand that actually made the movie prop, Nike has been at the forefront of that endeavor and has, in fact, already launched a few pairs of “self-lacing” sneakers years ago. It may have been a hit back then because of its novelty, but the shoe company no longer found any reason to make new ones or to continue supporting the ones that already exist. In fact, it just announced not only the discontinuation of this unique Adapt BB line but also of its app, which will leave some owners rethinking their purchase.

Designer: Nike

“Self-lacing sneakers” are not as magical as they might sound, simply utilizing magnets and electronics to tighten or loosen the shoes. For the Adapt BB line that launched in 2019, you could do this, along with other functions, by pressing buttons on the side of the shoes or, more conveniently, using a smartphone app. That app also provided settings you can’t very well make on the shoes themselves, particularly changing the colors of the buttons’ lights or saving three preset tightness settings.

Nike, however, has discontinued its self-lacing sneakers, and on August 6th, it will also be dropping its mobile apps. Owners of Adapt BBs don’t have to panic, at least not yet, because they can still install the app until that date, and the app will stay installed on their phones even when it disappears from Google Play Store and the Apple App Store. That does mean, however, that you can no longer install or even transfer the app after that day, so if you lose your phone or change devices, you’ll be out of luck.

Fortunately, the shoes themselves will continue working even without the app, but it will mostly be a manual affair without some conveniences. You will not be able to change light colors anymore, for example, and there will only be one preset remembered. You can, however, still tighten or loosen the shoe by pressing the buttons, which require you to bend over like any ordinary shoe. It might still seem a bit advanced, but no longer as mind-blowing as the original.

The announcement, however, does bring a few concerns and questions to mind. For one, the Adapt BB will lose one of its biggest appeal: its accessibility for people who might have difficulty lacing and unlacing sneakers. It also paints a somewhat dubious future for smart wearables like these. While people are used to changing phones almost every two years and for manufacturers to drop support sooner rather than later, most of us keep our wardrobe and footwear until they’re no longer usable, and manufacturer support is rare if not unheard of.

Nike and Hyperice boots use air compression to massage athlete’s feet, a boon for warmup and recovery

Par : Gaurav Sood
25 juin 2024 à 20:45

Like precaution is better than cure in everyday life, warmup and recovery before and after a strenuous workout or competition are equally important. Nike has over decades made life immensely comfortable for athletes with the most relaxed footwear options. Now, it is tying up with Hyperice to ensure that the warmup and recovery phases in a player’s life are also taken care of by the Swoosh brand with equal prowess.

To that accord, in collaboration with Hyperice, – a name providing athletes with innovative technology during recovery to improve the performance of muscles and joints – Nike is working on developing a pair of boots and vest that would “help athletes perform at their best throughout training and competition.”

Designer: Nike

Nike and Hyperice boot and vest, Tobie Hatfield, Senior Director, Nike Athlete Innovation informs, “get the body ready for activity, whether you’re playing for a title or you’re on your feet a lot at work.” An extension of Nike’s focus on the integration of wearable technology in its products, these pair of boots would provide the wear with heat and dynamic air compression at the feet and ankle, which feels like a foot massage. This prepares the body before a workout and can relax the feet after a long stressful game or if the person has been on the foot for too long.

The Nike and Hyperice vest is designed to monitor and maintain the body temperature of a player. For this, the vest is integrated with thermal modules and pressure sensors that work in tandem to ensure effective heating and cooling of the body. Both the vest and the shoes are still under development and will be launched at a “later date,“ Nike confirms.

The pair of high-top shoes, push the boundary of what’s possible for today’s athletes, with air Normatec bladders and warming elements. The air bladders inflate and deflate – what feels like a massage – and allow the heat to distribute evenly and deep in the feet and ankle to provide soothing comfort to the wearer’s feet. Of course, the shoes are primarily targeted at the athletes, with the likes of LeBron James testing them, the adaptation of technology could be beneficial for people whose work requires them to stand and walk too much.

“From the moment I tried the Nike x Hyperice boots and vest while they were still in development more than a year ago, I knew they were going to change the game for athletes’ warm-up and recovery,” LeBron James notes. It is worth noting that the heat and air compression in the Nike x Hyperice boots are customizable. The user can synchronize the heat and compression with the push of a button (at the control panel placed on the midsole), and can even choose to run different settings on individual shoes, if required.

If Peloton met Spatial Video – The HoloBike is an exercise bicycle with a 4K holographic, immersive screen

Par : Sarang Sheth
15 juin 2024 à 01:45

Wouldn’t you enjoy your exercises much more if they were immersive? It’s why apps like Beat Saber and Supernatural have become such hits in the VR community, offering a true exercise experience while transporting you from your home to somewhere different and more enjoyable. Your regular home gym, Rower Machine, or Peloton won’t do that, but the HoloBike will. With a design one can only describe as future-minimalist, the HoloBike is a cutting-edge spin cycle or exercise bike that comes with a massive 27-inch 4K holographic display on front. Think gaming monitor, but powered by exercise, letting you move around in a virtual space as you cycle. You can drive on virtual highways across the outback, cruise off-road on forest trails, or even on mountain terrains like the Alps. The faster you cycle, the faster you move in VR… except without needing to wear 3D glasses or a clunky nausea-inducing VR headset.

Designers: LAYER Design & Saga Holographic

Click Here to Buy Now: $2599 $2999 ($400 off) Hurry! Discount on first 200 HoloBikes.

If you stop thinking of the HoloBike as a bike and start thinking of it as a massive gaming controller, it all makes sense. Instead of pressing a forward button or left and right to turn, you cycle and steer to progress in the virtual space. It’s an innovative bridge between the rigor of exercise and the fun of gaming and exploration, but in the comfort of your house. Most exercise equipment leaves you staring at walls or at small displays with stats – the HoloBike immerses you in an environment that you can cycle around, letting you choose your trail.

“When I’m riding outdoors, I can go for 3 hours just absorbed in that captivating rhythm of moving through space. But even 10 minutes training on a stationary bike feels painfully monotonous. That phenomenon of time dilation is fascinating. If we could tap into that sense of flow, we could create a more meditative training experience that enhances focus and endurance,” says Samuel Matson, Saga CEO and Founder.

The hyper-minimalist design of the HoloBike is thanks to LAYER Design, which helped bring a clean aesthetic to the exercise equipment, making it look like something from the future. The spin bike comes with a floor-standing design but a black and white color-way and clean surfaces. A metal disc at the back encases the gear system while pedals on the front let you move. Orange details found around the bike’s frame let you adjust its shape to suit your ergonomics, and a large 4K display gives you glasses-free 3D so you can immerse yourself in your new world as you cycle.

The technology used by the HoloBike is similar to the glasses-free 3D screens seen in some niche smartphones across the last decade (remember the RED Phone?). The bike comes equipped with a sizeable 27-inch LCD screen outputting 4K resolution – but look closer and the screen has a lenticular film on it, comprising thousands of micro-lenses that create a left and right channel for your eyes, sort of like those holographic posters or sports cards. This effectively allows your eyes to sense depth by seeing two separate images, creating an immersive world that doesn’t require glasses or strapping a headset to your face. A soundbar right beneath it further enhances the immersive experience, transporting you to a new place.

The result is far superior to some crummy game you’d play on a laptop. As much as Saga Holographics (the company behind the bike) is an exercise company, it’s a spatial reality company too – every single environment offered by the HoloBike is designed from scratch using actual photogrammetric scans of trees, logs, leaves, bushes, roads, signs, etc. The virtual world is a reconstruction of the real world, using a combination of procedural rendering and AI advancements to help render out the entire experience in a way that feels hyperrealistic.

The stationary bike comes with adjustable wheels that let you move it around your house before locking it in place.

The bicycle itself is also fine-tuned to be a state-of-the-art exercise device. You can control the dashboard using buttons on the handlebars, setting your scene and pre-programming your routine. The bicycle’s proportions can be adjusted, letting you shift the handlebars up or down, move the seat forward or backward, or even adjust the seat’s height. Electromagnetic resistance lets you mimic real-life cycling experiences like gear shifts, or going uphill/downhill. A polymer drivetrain helps enable silent pedaling so all you can hear is the sound coming from the display in front of you, and your own breath as you work out.

The HoloBike has an impressive amount of tech inside it, with an AI-ready chipset that powers the 3D VR experience, a holographic display, and all the features of a cutting-edge spin bike or exercise bike without any of the monotony of regular home gym equipment, or the sneaky monthly fees of a Peloton. At $2599, it prices itself in the same Peloton category too, albeit with a minimalist design that grabs eyes, and a holographic display that grabs minds. Your exercises will never feel this immersive and fun!

Circulez y a rien à voir !
