Many of our electronics today rely on batteries, from laptops to phones to smart home appliances to even cars. It’s almost ironic, then, that these critical batteries are also one of the most dangerous things we keep near our bodies, not to mention a hazard to the health of the planet as well. From the way they are made to the unsustainable metals and chemicals they contain, batteries, by nature, seem opposed to life itself.

Green energy like solar and wind can go only as far as recharging batteries, but we still need these volatile objects to power devices directly. This innovative battery, however, attempts to reinvent batteries from the ground up to provide true sustainable power to the point that they can even be broken down as compost. Even more intriguing, they’re made of materials you’d least expect to find in batteries: paper and water.

Technically speaking, the batteries aren’t made of the same kind of paper you write on or read from. It actually uses cellulose as the structural backbone and separator of the battery, an abundant material derived from plants and also used in paper, hence the name. As for water, it’s used as the foundation for the electrolytes that actually carry the electrical flow between the zinc-based anode and the manganese-based cathode, both of which are non-reactive, safe, and commonly found everywhere.

This unusual composition for a battery yields many benefits beyond simply being made of sustainable materials. For one, the battery has unbelievable resilience and can still output power even when cut in half, let alone not explode in your pocket when punctured. It’s also impervious to fire since it uses water-based electrolytes. This practically removes the need for those fancy but complicated and expensive cooling systems in phones and laptops, presuming they get used in those devices. The batteries can also be folded and bent safely, finally realizing the dream of flexible batteries.

The Flint Paper Batteries are advertised to have the same performance in terms of output and longevity as typical toxic rechargeable batteries. And yes, they’re rechargeable as well. They won’t live forever, though, and when they’ve finally lost their charge for good, simply removing the vacuum-sealed casing starts the natural degradation process that breaks them down into harmless components.

It all sounds idyllic but the technology is not completely ready for mass consumption just yet. One of the biggest hurdles that still needs to be overcome is mass production, and Flint’s creators are planning on using currently existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes in order to minimize production and adoption costs. When that happens, we could finally take a major step forward in running not only on green power but also on safe and recyclable batteries as well.

Most of us, for all sane reasons, would prefer not to wear a watch to a sauna. Saunas have an unfriendly environment for watches that can experience failure due to expansion from heat and moisture. Casio, however, believes sauna goers would have a better track of the time to spend inside if they had a watch on the wrist; supposedly why sauna-going creators within Casio have developed heat and moisture-resistant watch that you can wear in a sauna.

This special watch – Casio CPP-002 – is intended for use in hot and humid environments, such as in a sauna. It features a body made from resin, said to have low moisture absorptivity, and comes paired with a coiled, expandable wristband that draws design reference from wristbands used with locker keys at gyms and saunas. The watch with the band weighs only 24.5 grams.

The idea of a heat and humidity-resistant watch from Casio is welcome news for many G-Shock takers – including firefighters – who would want this tech to trickle down to their favorite Casio watch lineup. We don’t have a word on whether that is happening anytime soon, but what we know is that Casio is going to launch the watch through a crowdfunding campaign on the Makuake platform in Japan.

Maybe a successful campaign allows the experimental tech to reach through to a heat-resistant and moisture-resistant G-Shock. For now, this 35.4 mm sauna watch wears an analog dial and comes with a 12-minute counter to time sauna sessions. The timer will let you know “sauna, cold bath, and break times at a glance,” the campaign page (expected to go live on December 2) reads.

The Casio CPP-002 arrives in three color variants: Orange, Black and Blue. Blue watch, model no CPP-002-BU, has been designed in collaboration with Sauna Ikitai: A sauna search website. The water resistance rating is 5 ATM (50 meters) and features two pusher buttons to switch modes and reset. It is likely to cost in the ¥10,000 – ¥11,000 ($60 to $70) range, but sadly will only ship to addresses in Japan. There is no mention of global availability at the time of writing: more clarity is expected once the crowdfunding campaign gets underway.

Usually, these are three different things that you carry. But a designer has come up with a way to have all three in just one item.

The Beacon Bottle for Hikers is a product concept for something that hikers can carry that has different functionalities. The way that it’s designed is that it looks like a lamp that serves as your light source but it also looks like a water bottle for your hydration needs. And yes, it is both. Plus, there’s even a compass on the cover so that you get another bonus with this item and it lessens the items that you need to bring with you.

The body of the bottle even has a textured surface so that it’s easy to grip while you’re drinking. The light-emitting component is at the bottom of the bottle and can be attached and detached easily with a threaded mechanism. If you detach it from the bottle, you can still use it as an independent light source. The charging part has a type-c port and you can still use it even when it’s charging.

The compass is integrated into the polypropylene bottle cap while the handle is designed for easy carrying or can also be attached to the backpack or hung on a tree branch. The body of the bottle is made from polyethylene terephthalate so it shouldn’t be that heavy. If all you need is to hydrate and have something to light your way (and give you direction), then this is a handy tool to have during your long hikes.

The Titan submersible implosion was a grim reminder of the serious dangers involved in deep-sea expeditions and explorations for eco-tourism. While some might argue that it is way better than exploration on the sea surface, there’s got to be a better and safer way to experience the wonders of the underwater world in person.

François-Alexandre Bertrand has a solution in the form of Platypus Craft prototype, a semi-submersible vessel for safe and feasible underwater exploration. This is in line with breaking the notion that water adventure activities and environmental responsibility are hard to coexist. Clear from the naming convention, the zero-emission craft is inspired by the amphibious Playptus mammal.

The five-seater watercraft is developed in partnership with Evoy who have developed the high-output electric motors for the vessel. Platypus Craft has some cool trickery up its sleeve for underwater exploration. The seating platform can be lowered down completely to submerge the riders safely for a whole new experience. It comes with an array of safety equipment like retractable air hoses connected to an onboard compressor.

This dual configuration has many benefits, including multi-functionality and fewer chances of harming the marine ecosystem. One can use it for riding the waters for scenic trips or more intense underwater explorations within the safety norms.

The watercraft gets twin Evoy Outboard Breeze 120+ electric motors mated to a 63KW twin battery pack. This makes the vessel having a catamaran hull design, reach a top speed of 25 knots and have a cruising speed of 15 knots when riding the surface. When submerged underwater, Platypus Craft prototype’s speed is reduced to a comfortable 3 to 5 knots for unobstructed views of the marine life. In the submerged mode, the craft can cover an impressive distance of 30 to 80 nautical miles.

Initially, the maker is going to release the Platypus Yacht Edition in 2025, fueling a new era of submersible explorations sans the inherent dangers of deep-sea explorations. The watercraft will be the first ever commercially available submersible to feature Evoy’s electric motor system that comes with zero-emission promise and also eliminates the typical fuel slicks and bilge water problems with non-electric versions.

Brazil apparently has one of the most effective (and affordable!) water filtration systems in the world. You can find clay water filters in almost every home and markets and they are actually created by local craftsmen. There are some challenges to this though as it is not always aesthetically pleasing and some people say there is a certain aftertaste to the water that goes through this system. There is even sometimes a problem about mold as well. Now a reinterpretation of the clay water filters may have solved some of those issues.

A Brazil-based design studio has come up with the Biologique water filter which still uses the same filter system. However, it uses white ceramic so that the water should taste about the same but of course it is filtered. It also doesn’t leave any mold but is also easy to clean, which was also a problem with the traditional filter. The important thing though is that it is able to bring clean, drinking water with the simple filtration system that doesn’t require any complicated installation or instructions.

For those that are concerned with the aesthetics of the water filter, then this is also where Biologique shines. It has a simple, minimalistic design that still keeps the original idea of the clay water filter but brings a more modern feel to it. It has two round parts on top of each other, a wooden stand, and a faucet that looks like those you find in draft beer machines. It comes in different colors: terracotta, rosé, green, brown, off white, black, gray, and capuccino.

The Biologique water filter comes in 9.0L and a petit version in 4.5L so you have two options depending on your space and the drinking water capacity of the people you live with. Of course it is more expensive than the traditional clay water filters that you’ll find in the usual Brazilian households. That’s the price you have to pay to have something prettier and better designed. Estúdio Biologique says their products are done by hand and on a small scale, so that’s also one of the reasons for the price point.

According to makers, “it is a first-of-its-kind, ultra-luxury commerce environment that immerses you in the world of DC’s Bruce Wayne, the billionaire civilian persona of The Batman.”

The limited-edition watercraft is a balanced iteration of luxury and high-end technology for the best experience venturing out in the waters. Only 27 units of this vessel will be created by T3MP3ST who have been redefining nautical adventures with innovative Electric Exploration Vehicles designed for the government agencies and the elite.

The 4-meter power boat is designed out of carbon fiber and stainless steel to optimize performance without harming the environment. The use of these materials keeps the total weight down to 1,300 pounds. The power comes from a 100 kWh modular battery that’s mated to a 350 hp electric motor. This enables it to reach speeds of more than 85 mph and have a range of 75 miles on a single full charge. That roughly equates to around six hours of runtime. The watercraft is loaded with an autonomous navigation system that has Garmin’s advanced GPS and voice command integration compatible with iOS and Apple Watch.

This EEV comes with high-grade customization to suit the needs of demanding buyers. It is crafted for a four-seat configuration just like a jet-ski, keeping in mind Batman and Robin would hop onto the ride whenever criminals decide to fox the authorities by taking the water route. Plus there’s space for two more to add to the fighting power. If buyers want to have more seating space, the company is also offering a larger version with a 30-foot RIB hull that can ferry 8 passengers. Top speeds on this one are considerably lower at 40 knots but it can cruise for eight hours on a single charge.
