Imaginez un instant que soyez contrebandier de puces électroniques… Vous venez de recevoir un serveur Dell flambant neuf bourré de puces Nvidia H100 que vous comptez évidemment revendre à prix d’or sur le marché chinois.

Alors vous ouvrez le carton, pour inspecter minutieusement chaque recoin du paquet et là, Ô surprise, vous trouvez un petit boîtier de la taille d’un smartphone bien caché dans l’emballage. Félicitations !! Vous venez de vous faire griller par l’Oncle Sam !

Cette histoire n’est pas tirée d’un film d’espionnage de mon cerveau torturé mais bien de la réalité car selon Reuters, les autorités américaines ont placé secrètement des trackers GPS dans certaines livraisons de puces IA qu’elles considèrent à haut risque de détournement vers la Chine.

Et apparemment, ça fonctionne plutôt bien puisque deux ressortissants chinois ont été arrêtés début août pour avoir tenté d’exporter illégalement pour des dizaines de millions de dollars de puces Nvidia vers l’Empire du Milieu.

Et le niveau de sophistication de l’opération est top, car les trackers ne sont pas juste collés sur les cartons. Dans un cas documenté datant de 2024, les autorités ont carrément placé plusieurs types de dispositifs. A la fois des gros trackers visibles sur les boîtes d’expédition pour le suivi basique, et des plus petits, bien planqués dans l’emballage voire directement dans les serveurs eux-mêmes. C’est malin !!

Mais ces contrebandiers ne sont pas dupes non plus. On peut lire par exemple dans les documents judiciaires, que l’un des accusés avait prévenu son complice : “Fais attention de bien chercher s’il y a un tracker dessus, tu dois regarder attentivement”. Ces types passent leur temps à démonter des serveurs Dell et Super Micro pour vérifier qu’il n’y a pas de mouchard caché quelque part… Bref, ce sont devenu des champions au jeu du chat et de la souris avec les autorités.

Bien sûr cette pratique n’est pas nouvelle du tout. Les États-Unis utilisent des trackers pour surveiller les exportations sensibles depuis des décennies. En 1985 déjà, Hughes Aircraft avait vu ses équipements interceptés par les douanes américaines qui y avaient installé un dispositif de localisation. Sauf qu’à l’époque, on parlait de pièces d’avion, pas de puces IA capables de faire tourner des LLM.

Et l’ampleur de ce trafic est vertigineuse. Malgré les restrictions imposées depuis 2022, au moins 1 milliard de dollars de puces Nvidia auraient été introduites illégalement en Chine rien qu’au cours des trois derniers mois. Les contrebandiers passent par la Malaisie, Singapour ou les Émirats arabes unis pour brouiller les pistes. C’est un vrai business qui rapporte gros quand on sait qu’une seule puce H100 peut se négocier plusieurs dizaines de milliers de dollars au marché noir.

Et pendant ce temps, la tension monte entre Pékin et les fabricants de puces. Le 31 juillet dernier, l’administration chinoise du cyberespace a convoqué Nvidia pour lui demander des explications sur les risques de “backdoors” dans ses puces H20. Les Chinois craignaient que les Américains puissent désactiver à distance leurs précieux processeurs ou les utiliser pour les espionner. Nvidia a bien sûr démenti catégoriquement (What else !?), expliquant que mettre des backdoors dans des puces serait un cadeau fait aux hackers et aux acteurs hostiles et que ça mettrait à risque l’infrastructure numérique mondiale.

Au milieu de ce bras de fer géopolitique, les entreprises comme Dell et Super Micro se retrouvent donc coincées. Dell affirme ne pas être au courant de cette initiative gouvernementale de tracking, tandis que Super Micro refuse de commenter ses “pratiques et politiques de sécurité”. Nvidia et AMD, eux, préfèrent ne pas répondre du tout. On les comprend, c’est un sujet sensible…

Cette histoire de trackers dans les puces révèle surtout l’absurdité de la situation actuelle car d’un côté, les États-Unis tentent désespérément d’empêcher la Chine d’accéder aux technologies d’IA les plus avancées. Et de l’autre, la demande chinoise est tellement forte que des réseaux entiers de contrebande se sont organisés pour contourner l’embargo.

Le pire c’est que les autorités américaines envisagent maintenant d’obliger les fabricants à intégrer directement des systèmes de localisation DANS leurs puces. Oui, oui… Vous vous doutez, c’est une proposition qui fait bondir l’industrie, car elle créerait une vulnérabilité permanente dans le hardware. Comme l’a dit David Reber, le responsable sécurité de Nvidia, intégrer un kill switch dans une puce, serait “une invitation ouverte au désastre”, et je suis assez d’accord avec lui.

Bon, apparemment il suffit que des puces Nvidia soient “tombées du camion” pour qu’un milliard de dollars de GPU ultra puissants se retrouvent sur le marché noir chinois. Le Financial Times a enquêté et ce qu’ils ont découvert est assez dingue.

Alors que les États-Unis font tout pour empêcher la Chine d’accéder aux dernières technologies d’IA, des B200, H100 et H200 de Nvidia circulent tranquillement sur les réseaux sociaux chinois. Leur prix ? 50% au-dessus du tarif normal, mais visiblement ça ne freine personne. Les vendeurs proposent même des racks pré-assemblés avec 8 puces B200, prêts à brancher dans un datacenter. Genre tu commandes sur WeChat et hop, tu reçois ton rack de 150 kilos à 560 000 dollars.

D’après l’enquête du FT, rien qu’entre avril et juin 2025, c’est plus d’un milliard de dollars de matos qui aurait transité. Les puces passent par la Thaïlande, la Malaisie, et d’autres pays d’Asie du Sud-Est où les contrôles sont… disons plus souples. La Malaisie a d’ailleurs vu ses importations de GPU avancés exploser de 3400% début 2025. Coïncidence ? Je ne crois pas…

Le plus ironique dans l’histoire, c’est que ces restrictions viennent juste d’être assouplies pour les puces moins puissantes comme la H20. Mais bon, pourquoi se contenter d’une 2CV quand on peut avoir une Ferrari, même au marché noir ?

Une boîte chinoise basée à Shanghai, “Gate of the Era” (ça ne s’invente pas), créée en février juste avant que les restrictions ne tombent (le timing est parfait), aurait à elle seule écoulé pour 400 millions de dollars de systèmes B200. Ils vendent même des racks complets entre 3,9 et 3,95 millions de yuans pièce.

Et Nvidia, de son côté, fait la sourde oreille. Leur réponse officielle ? “Nous ne fournissons support et service qu’aux produits Nvidia autorisés”. Traduction : démerdez-vous avec vos GPU de contrebande. Mais bon, avec une valorisation de 4000 milliards de dollars, ils vont pas trop pleurer sur quelques puces qui s’égarent.

Ce qui est fascinant, c’est comment les Chinois ont industrialisé le contournement. Les vendeurs testent même les puces avant de les vendre pour garantir qu’elles fonctionnent. Service après-vente inclus apparemment. Un opérateur de datacenter chinois l’a dit cash au FT : “Les contrôles à l’export n’empêcheront pas les produits les plus avancés de Nvidia d’entrer en Chine. Ça ajoute juste de l’inefficacité et crée d’énormes profits pour les intermédiaires prêts à prendre des risques.”

Pendant ce temps, DeepSeek et d’autres boîtes d’IA chinoises prétendent faire aussi bien que les modèles américains avec beaucoup moins de ressources, mais visiblement, ça ne les empêche pas de quand même vouloir mettre la main sur les derniers joujoux de Nvidia.

Jensen Huang, le CEO de Nvidia né à Taiwan, voit toujours la Chine comme une opportunité énorme. C’est d’ailleurs lui qui aurait négocié avec Trump pour assouplir certaines restrictions. Mais pour les B200 et H100, c’est toujours un niet officiel !

Le gouvernement américain essaie surtout pendant ce temps de boucher les trous. Le Department of Commerce envisage par exemple d’imposer des contrôles plus stricts sur des pays comme la Thaïlande dès septembre. Mais franchement, quand y’a autant d’argent en jeu, croyez-moi, les contrebandiers trouveront toujours un moyen.

Au final, cette histoire montre bien les limites d’une guerre commerciale technologique. C’est un peu comme la drogue… Tu peux interdire, restreindre, sanctionner, mais quand la demande est là et que les profits sont juteux, le marché trouve toujours un chemin où les seuls qui s’enrichissent vraiment, ce sont les intermédiaires qui prennent leur commission de 50% au passage.

L’affaire nous vient d’un certain dmanthey sur Reddit qui raconte sa mésaventure. Le gars achète tranquillement 4 jeux Switch 1 d’occase sur Facebook, les insère dans sa Switch 2 flambant neuve, lance les mises à jour et va se coucher. Le lendemain matin, surprise ! Son compte est banni des services en ligne. Nintendo a décidé que c’était louche et paf, sanction directe.

Je ne suis pas nerd de l’impression 3D même si j’adore ma Bambulab parce qu’elle fonctionne à tous les coups sans me demander 3h de réglages. Et je sais aussi reconnaitre quand une idée est cool et c’est le cas ici avec cette imprimante 3D qui utilise un tapis de course comme plateau, ce qui lui permet d’imprimer de longues pièces.

On appelle ça une imprimante à bande et dans le commerce c’est vendu par exemple par Creality pour un peu plus de mille euros… Mais la faire soi-même avec du matériel de sport, c’est quand même plus cool. Surtout quand on trouve des tapis de course sur Leboncoin à 50 balles, abandonnés par leurs propriétaires après trois sessions de cardio et une prise de conscience que Netflix et les M&M’s c’est quand même bien plus sympa que de transpirer.

Bandit9 Motors is well respected here at Yanko Design for their unique sense of going about for restomod conversions that have a piece of history associated with them. Kickstarting their exciting journey with motorbike restomods, the custom tuning shop moved onto the four wheels with the stunning Monaco electric car in pure black, and then later on the improved version of EVE Odyssey arrived.

Going back and forth between two-wheelers and four-wheelers alternatively, they’ve revealed the War Truck restomod under their coachbuilding division VAN DARYL Gallery. This will be their second project after the electric Batmobile under this sub-brand. The donor jeep for this build has a lot of history behind it, as it is one of the jeeps used by U.S. troops after the Vietnam War. Otherwise lying abandoned in obscurity and inevitable deterioration, the VAN DARYL War Truck (yes that’s what it is called) is infused with new life.

At heart the War Truck is an amalgam of intense military history with modern automotive aesthetics, reviving the tough vehicle into a restomod highlighted by a sci-fi treatment. Once VAN got the first jeep into their shop the truck was stripped down to see what old parts could still be relevant in the modern build. First, the team reinforced the custom-designed body with steel and aluminum frames to make it highly durable just like the Tesla Cybertruck. They also decided to increase the ground clearance by refitting the independent coil suspension. The front and rear drum brakes have been retained, encapsulated by the more modern steelie-inspired forged alloy wheels that have light aero-disc influence.

The boxy look is complemented by the rear-mounted full-spare tire housing, side-running exhausts, lightly flared fenders, bespoke steel bumper, retro-inspired LED headlights, and taillights that carry the same neo-retro design ethos.
