Apple Watch Ultra 2 Debuts in Satin Black with Sleep Apnea Detection

9 septembre 2024 à 18:16

Apple has unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 2, now available in a striking satin black finish and packed with new health features like sleep apnea detection. Announced at Apple’s September event, this refresh marks the first time the Ultra has been offered in more than one color since its launch two years ago.

Designer: Apple

The Ultra 2 uses its accelerometer and long-term motion tracking to detect signs of sleep apnea, enhancing the watch’s reputation as a health-focused device. Additionally, the new Vitals app monitors respiratory rate and sleep duration and flags any outliers in these key health metrics. Apple has also introduced the new Training Load feature, designed to help athletes balance exertion and recovery based on their activity levels.

Priced at $799, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is available for preorder now, with deliveries beginning September 20th. It retains the rugged titanium case but now features a custom diamond-like carbon PVD coating, making it more scratch-resistant. The new titanium Milanese Loop, inspired by mesh used in scuba gear, provides a lightweight, corrosion-resistant band option.

The Ultra 2 is equipped with Apple’s S9 chip, which offers faster performance and enables on-device Siri processing for greater efficiency. It also sports a brighter display, ideal for outdoor activities, and remains Apple’s battery life leader, built to last through extended workouts and adventures.

WatchOS 11, which powers the Ultra 2, updates the Smart Stack, now showing Live Activities similar to the iPhone. Offline maps, enhanced GPS accuracy, and detailed workout metrics make the watch a powerful tool for athletes, hikers, and divers alike. With automatic stroke detection for swimmers, track detection for runners, and cycling metrics like cadence and power, the Ultra 2 is designed to meet the needs of serious fitness enthusiasts.

This year’s addition of sleep apnea detection and a sleek black finish keeps the Ultra 2 as Apple’s premier wearable for those who demand advanced health tracking, durability, and performance in their smartwatch.

Apple Watch Series 10: Largest Display and Enhanced Usability Detailed

9 septembre 2024 à 17:48

Apple’s latest wearable, the Series 10 Watch, pushes usability and design to new heights. Featuring its largest and most advanced display yet, the Series 10 now boasts the biggest screen ever built into the brand’s smartwatch lineup. Slightly larger than the Apple Watch Ultra, this screen provides up to 30% more area than earlier versions, allowing users to increase font size without losing content and offering extra lines of text for apps like Messages and Mail.

Designer: Apple

In focusing on user experience, the company has made Series 10 easier to interact with. Rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio give the watch a sleek and softer appearance. One of the most significant upgrades is the first-ever wide-angle OLED display, designed to emit more light at wider viewing angles. This proves particularly useful when checking the watch from the side, such as while typing or walking. The display is also up to 40% brighter when viewed at an angle, making information easier to read in passing.

Battery efficiency remains a priority, and Series 10 features Always On mode, which updates once per second and displays a ticking second hand even when the wrist is down. A new watch face, Flux, takes full advantage of the large display, filling it with dynamic color. The case, made from a polished aluminum alloy, marks a first for Apple with its reflective Jet Black and warm Rose Gold finishes.

Comfort has been central to the design of the Series 10. The latest iteration is Apple’s thinnest watch, measuring 9.7 millimeters thick, almost 10% thinner than its predecessor. Achieving this thin profile required miniaturizing essential components, including the digital crown, SIP, and speaker system, which has been re-engineered to be 30% smaller without compromising sound quality. Users can now play music or podcasts directly through the watch’s speaker, eliminating the need for AirPods in certain situations.

Series 10 offers the fastest charging experience, thanks to a new metal back that integrates the antenna and enhances cellular performance. The design retains its 50-meter water resistance, making it ideal for swimming and surfing. Charging now reaches 80% in just 30 minutes, adding convenience to the user’s day.

Alongside the aluminum options, the tech giant has introduced polished titanium cases in three colors: natural, gold, and dark slate gray. These lightweight cases are nearly 20% lighter than the stainless steel Series 9, offering durability without extra bulk. The Milanese Loop and Classic Link bracelets have been updated to match these titanium finishes, creating a seamless metallic aesthetic.

Beyond functionality and design, the Series 10 reflects Apple’s commitment to sustainability. The titanium model is made with 95% recycled materials and produced using renewable electricity. The new S10 SIP, featuring a neural engine, powers key features like Siri dictation and crash detection, enhancing everyday usability and safety.

The Apple Watch Series 10 represents the company’s ongoing effort to combine thoughtful design with cutting-edge technology, delivering a seamless user experience worldwide.

With cord-cutting and streaming services, the boundaries between home entertainment and watching videos on the go have gotten even blurrier. With the freedom and flexibility of sources for entertainment, consumers have also begun yearning for freedom from conventional TV boxes or even flat displays. Laser projectors have risen in popularity in the past few years, whether they’re the big hulking boxes that are kept at home or the funky cylinders that we can take anywhere with us. With the XGIMI HORIZON S Max (formerly HORIZON Max) and HORIZON S Pro, you have more affordable choices that won’t compromise on quality. Starting at only $1,299, you’re getting “Max” Performance and “Pro” Innovation in a box that won’t burn a hole in your wallet.

The HORIZON S projectors are brimming with power, with a contrast ratio of 1000000:1 and brightness of 3100 ISO lumens for the HORIZON S Max and 1800 ISO lumens for the HORIZON S Pro. They’re also packed with intelligent ISA 5.0 features like uninterrupted auto keystone correction, intelligent object avoidance, and autofocus, just to name a few. Featuring Dual Light 2.0 technology that combines a Tri-Color Laser with LED, the projectors offer accurate imagery and eye comfort for every video or photo. And to match that superb light display, both are equipped with two 12W Harman Kardon speakers for the ultimate sound experience.

The XGIMI HORIZON S projectors are also masters of flexibility, with a built-in stand that can rotate 360 degrees horizontally and 135 degrees vertically. With premium designs that integrate with your home decor, the HORIZON S Max and HORIZON S Pro stand out as aesthetic pieces when not in use and as incredible home theater systems when the projectors turn on.

But Wait, There’s More!

Even with five new projectors under its belt, XGIMI hasn’t forgotten about fans of its beloved projectors. Launching the MoGo 2 Plus and Halo+ (New), XGIMI is introducing a new generation in its portfolio that adds Google TV support. This makes Netflix a first-class citizen, as demonstrated by new remotes with a dedicated Netflix button. Of course, these projectors still boast the same features that consumers have grown to love, like ISA 2.0 intelligent features and Dolby Audio. At $299 for the MoGo 2 Plus and $799 for the Halo+ (New), XGIMI covers a wide range of features, designs, and market tiers to make sure no one is left behind in their search for a theater experience at home or on-the-go.

TECNO at IFA 2024 reveals AI vision and AIoT products to advance Innovation For All

6 septembre 2024 à 08:30

AI as a buzzword has many raising their eyebrows at their every reference, but like any emerging technology, it is something that will redefine human life in the years to come. From AI assistants that understand and carry out every query to analytical AI that makes sense of your notes and data to summarize them into digestible information to generative AI which lets anyone create images and words, AI is empowering people to make more efficient use of their time and resources. That technology, however, will only truly have a positive impact on human civilization if it’s made available to everyone rather than just an elite few. As part of its mission to bring advanced technologies to emerging markets, TECNO is now announcing at IFA 2024 its encompassing vision for AI as well as the AIoT experiences and designs to bridge the digital divide.

Designer: TECNO

AI Vision: Practical AI

To some people, “AI” is a vague buzzword, while others understand it only in the form of Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa. The reality is that AI encompasses a wide range of features and applications, but its most important facet is how it can be integrated into daily life in order to improve the quality of people’s lives. For TECNO, this goal involves not just fancy new features or complicated neural networks or large language models, but also AI that can be understood by everyone, requiring localization and integration with local apps in markets where TECNO operates.

One such example is the Gemini-integrated TECNO smart assistant, Ella AI. Its conversational style makes interaction feel more natural, like talking to a real human who can adapt to the dynamic nature of most conversations. Whether you’re asking for advice on what to wear based on the weather or suggestions for recipes, the TECNO AI Assistant offers a more intuitive alternative to the conventional one-question-one-answer systems of smart assistants.

TECNO’s AI vision also includes features like Real-Time Translation that breaks down language barriers and better connects people across the globe. There’s also AI Writing, which can summarize long walls of text to make them easier to comprehend or help improve your writing with proofreading and suggestions. And, of course, there’s also AI Search that puts the world’s information beneath your fingertip, and quite literally, too, with the now popular circle to search gesture.

AI Artboard takes the somewhat controversial generative AI technology and transforms it into a tool to help give users a creativity boost when brainstorming for ideas. AI Image Editing cleans out undesirable objects in photos or helps put together a comical collage of objects in a single composition. Whether it’s for fun or serious work, TECNO’s AI Assistant helps people get their tasks done faster so they can have more time for more important creative work.

TECNO is also showcasing its first-ever AI PC, the TECNO MEGABOOK T16 Pro 2024 Ultra. Powered by an AI-powered Intel Core Ultra 7 processor with up to 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of storage, this AI laptop promises exceptional power to drive AI experiences, including those from Windows Copilot+.

TECNO Devices: Technology For All

Of course, AI isn’t the only focus of the technology company. At IFA 2024, TECNO is also unveiling its portfolio of devices that help bridge the digital divide and deliver much-needed technologies to emerging markets. First unveiled at MWC 2024 in February, the TECNO Pocket Go puts a twist on the handheld gaming PC market, combining a gaming computer inside a controller and AR glasses that offer a bigger screen than what these small handheld devices can offer. It also offers advanced AI head tracking and vibration algorithms to add a bit of spice to your games.

The TECNO MEGA MINI Gaming G1 shrinks a gaming desktop down to a more space-efficient size without compromising on performance and, more importantly, cooling. A whisper-quiet cooling pump ensures stable and consistent performance that both gamers and creators need to level up their game. Despite its minuscule form factor, it boasts an Intel Core i9-13900H processor and a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card not just for raw performance but to also support AI-powered features.

New to TECNO’s lineup is the MEGABOOK K16S, designed to let entertainment lovers “See bigger, See louder” with its 16-inch widescreen display and 2.5W 4013 quadruple speakers. Running on an AMD Ryzen R7 5800U processor paired with AMD Radeon graphics, the laptop promises stunning visuals and performance as well as AIoT (AI of Things) support that lets it seamlessly multi-task between devices.

HMD Fusion revives the modular phone dream with Smart Outfits back covers

Par : JC Torres
6 septembre 2024 à 00:30

Implementing a truly modular phone might be next to impossible at this point in time, but that doesn’t mean that the idea has no merits. It also doesn’t mean we can’t have some of the flexibility and customization that the concept promises, at least in some way that is practical and, more importantly, accessible to people today. That’s the vision behind the HMD Fusion, now formally a real thing rather than just a proof of concept, giving owners the choice of how they want to live their mobile phone life and, perhaps more significantly, the tools and opportunity to make their own “Smart Outfits” to customize their experience.

Designer: HMD

You might have heard of this style of smartphone modularity before, particularly if you’ve been following Nothing’s recent escapades. The CMF Phone 1 opened the doors to customized back covers, and it didn’t take long before creative people really took that offer and ran with it to a rather amusing degree. Now the HMD Fusion is daring to dream a bit bigger with an even more open ecosystem as well as a more affordable smartphone base.

The highlight of the HMD Fusion is the Smart Outfits, which you can place on its back as a rear cover. These can range from anything like a rugged protective cover to a wireless charging coil. Because of the special pogo pins on the back of the HMD Fusion, you can actually have more interactive functionality and no longer have to worry about needing a separate power source. The Flashy Outfit, for example, offers a ring light for taking selfies, whether with the 108MP rear camera or the 50MP front cam. You can also have something like a detachable game controller that won’t have the instability and latency of Bluetooth.

HMD, however, isn’t stopping there. It’s actually providing an open source software and hardware toolkit for more seasoned veterans to make their own Smart Outfits. It could potentially open the floodgates of creative designs, though do expect some to be over-the-top and impractical but also fun and novel. There is definitely unlimited potential, only hampered by the phone’s own hardware.

Inside, the HMD Fusion is pretty much an entry-level phone, with a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 process, 6GB of RAM, and an HD+ resolution screen only. The aforementioned cameras squarely aim at the GenZ market, though, who could use the Smart Outfit system to literally dress up their phones. Fortunately, the HMD Fusion also carries a very GenZ-friendly price tag of £199/249€ (roughly $279), which means almost anyone can have access to this appetizer of a modular phone, presuming it becomes available in their region.

Galaxy Book5 Pro 360: Samsung’s AI-Powered Convertible Laptop with Lunar Lake and 25-Hour Battery

Par : Gaurav Sood
5 septembre 2024 à 20:45

Come IFA 2024 and the race for the next generation Copilot+ PCs has kicked off. While Asus has showcased its portfolio of technologically advanced laptops, Samsung is keeping it low-key. The South Korean tech giant has introduced its debut entrant – Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 – into the Copilot+ PCs arena through a blog post.

Why has Samsung refrained from showcasing the thin, lightweight, and highly powerful laptop at the IFA is anybody’s guess, but from what the blog post reveals, the Book5 Pro definitely has an OLED display and a battery life to win more customers than the predecessors would have. Considering the fact that the laptop will be available only in select markets – France, Germany, the UK and the US per se – at launched later this month, the initial sales may not be clear indicators, the numbers would likely rise as and when the Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 goes on sale in other parts of the world.

Designer: Samsung

AI-focused Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 is powered by an Intel Core 7 Ultra Series 2 processor, which would provide the next level of computing prowess to this convertible laptop. Offered with a 16-inch OLED display, that can rotate a full 360 degrees, the laptop comes with an S Pen to ensure you can use it as a Windows tablet when you need it.

So, instead of just being a game-changing laptop, the Galaxy Book5 Pro 360, of course, is an undeniable tablet as well. Adding to it is its 10-point multi-touchscreen display that touts 3K super-resolution and 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Despite its large 16-inch form factor, the convertible laptop weighs only 1.69kg and measures roughly 12.8mm at the thickest point.

Besides the immaculate display and the incredible computing power – thanks to its 200V Lunar Lake Intel processor that provides the laptop with 47 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of NPU (neural processing unit) power, which qualifies the system for the Copilot+ PC branding – it also impresses with its battery life. Interestingly, the Book5 Pro 360 comes with a 76Wh battery that powers up using a 65W USB-C adapter and can easily last up to 25 hours of video playback blasting out through its Dolby Atmos quad speakers.

Samsung provides the Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM paired with a choice of 512GB or 1TB NVMe SSD. For connectivity, this slim laptop accommodates a HDMI 2.1 port, a pair of Thunderbolt 4 ports, USB-A 3.2, and a headphone/mic combo jack. Featuring Wi-Fi 7 (be, 2×2) and Bluetooth 5.4 support, the laptop is available for preorder as we speak. It is priced at £1,700 ($2,250) for the 512GB variant, and £1,900 ($2,500) for the 1TB version in the UK.

ASUS Zenbook S 14 with Ceraluminum lead Ubiquitous AI push with Intel Core Ultra 200V

If you haven’t noticed it yet, AI is taking over, but not in the nefarious Skynet sense. You can hear about it everywhere and, to be fair, it is actually everywhere, even when you don’t see it, let alone be aware of its existence. It’s coming to consumer devices, even when you’re not that interested in AI image generation and photo effects. To be fair, AI can do plenty to improve the computing experience, from optimizing performance to organizing our mess of data to make sense of all the notes and photos that we have taken over the years. To support that kind of AI in computers, however, you need a capable processor to handle that load, and ASUS collaborated with Intel to power this new generation of mobile computers with the latest Intel Core Ultra 200V Lunar Lake chips to cover a wide range of laptops that cater to an equally varied range of users.

Designer: ASUS

ASUS Zenbook S 14 with Ceraluminum

Revealed last June at Computex 2024, the ASUS Zenbook S 14 offers not only AI prowess but, perhaps more importantly, an exquisite design that’s made to last. The new Ceraluminum material, an amalgamation of ceramic and aluminum, combines the durability of metal with the elegance and texture of glass, delivering a graceful aesthetic that belies the power inside. This attention to detail carries over to the cooling system that includes a geometric grille design composed of no less than 2,715 vents. Only 2.6 lbs light and 0.47 inches (11.9mm) thin, the Zenbook S 14 offers a delightful mobile experience that doesn’t compromise on power either.

That power is delivered by the new Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, promising 47 TOPS of neural processing performance to drive those AI features, whether it’s cleaning up audio for conference calls or adding effects to video interactions. Windows’ CoPilot+ key is also there, ready to generate images, create detailed summaries, and more with just the push of a button. The laptop’s 72Wh battery and a full range of ports, including Thunderbolt 4 support, allow users to take their work anywhere they go without having to worry too much about running to the nearest power outlet.

ASUS Vivobook S 14

Embracing minimalism and simplicity, the ASUS Vivobook S 14 delivers that same Intel Lunar Lake performance in a sleek and unassuming design. With a weight of 2.85 lbs and a 0.55-inch profile, this mobile computer offers a stylish companion for all your work and entertainment needs, wherever life takes you. With an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V and its 47 NPU TOPS performance, you also have the full range of AI features available at your fingertips.

Quality of life features for the Vivobook S 14 include a gorgeous 14-inch 16:10 OLED display and Harman Kardon-certified Dolby Atmos speakers, a good number of I/O options, including a microSD card reader, and a large touchpad to complement an RGB backlit keyboard. A 75Wh battery promises hours of use on the go, while USB-C charging offers the flexibility to charge even when away from power outlets.

ASUS Vivobook 14/16 Flip

If flexibility is the name of the game, then the new 14-inch and 16-inch ASUS Vivobook Flip notebooks will satisfy your needs. A 360-degree hinge converts the laptop into a tablet or display, depending on the circumstances, and support for the optional ASUS Pen 2.0 helps those creative juices flow more naturally. Of course, it is also powered by the new Intel Core Ultra 7 258V, giving it AI chops you can take with you anywhere.

The ASUS Zenbook S 14 (UX5406), which is now available from ASUS’s online store, will also be available for pre-order from Best Buy starting 6th September with a starting price tag of $1,399.99. The ASUS Vivobook S 14 (Q423) has a starting price of $999.99 and will be up for pre-order from Best Buy on 5th September, with other configurations following in Q4 this year. Also launching in Q4 are the ASUS Vivobook 14 Flip and Vivobook 16 Flip, with details to be disclosed closer to their availability.

Acer Project DualPlay Laptop Concept puts a unique twist to gaming on the go

Par : JC Torres
4 septembre 2024 à 13:00

PC gaming has experienced a huge boost thanks to the advent of handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck, the ASUS ROG Ally, and the Lenovo Legion Go. But while these offer a more mobile gaming experience, they still pale in comparison to dedicated gaming laptops when it comes to performance, battery life, and heat management. Gaming laptops have been around for years, of course, but they, too, are experiencing a renaissance, whether they’re becoming slimmer and sleeker or, in this case, taking on a completely different design. Rather than completely overhauling the laptop or even doing away with it, the Acer Project DualPlay concept instead transforms this familiar design into something that adapts to the latest gaming trends, including playing the same game with a friend who’s right beside you.

Designer: Acer

The days when PC and console gaming camps were divided across keyboard or controller lines are long gone. Those on PS5 and Xbox now feel the need to grab a keyboard to communicate with friends, while some PC gamers now swear by gamepads, especially those playing on handheld PCs. The trends may have changed, but the design of gaming laptops has not caught up to this shift, which is why the Acer Project DualPlay concept changes the formula a wee bit by embracing both playing styles in the same device.

When you press a certain “release” button on top of the keyboard with two fingers, the laptop’s extra-large touchpad pops out and becomes a wireless controller, not unlike those you’d usually connect and bring with you in a separate case or pouch. This dual system lets gamers quickly switch between keyboard and controller without missing a beat and without having to worry about forgetting to bring the controller or having no space for it in the bag.

“DualPlay,” however, has dual meanings here. That detachable controller can actually be separated into two joysticks, not unlike the concept of the Nintendo Switch Joy-con, allowing two people to compete or cooperate in the same game without having to fight over the controls. It brings back the social feeling of playing with someone beside you that home consoles offered, except you’re no longer limited to doing that at home.

The Acer Project DualPlay gaming laptop concept has other surprising features that really take gaming to the next level. Releasing the controller also pops out two high-fidelity 5W speakers from the sides, delivering audio that’s not impeded by desks or other obstacles. There’s also an overabundance of dynamic RGB lighting not only around the keyboard but also around the screen, flanking the detachable controllers, the infinity mirror lighting bar on the back, and even the controller’s joysticks. It definitely looks like a gaming laptop from the future, though it remains to be seen if it is far too ahead of its time as well.

Acer Nitro Blaze 7 jumps into handheld gaming PC arena with Ryzen AI chops

4 septembre 2024 à 13:00

You know that handheld gaming PCs have made it big when major PC manufacturers join the fray. At this point, almost every major brand has put out its own take on mobile gaming, not to mention the smaller names that really pushed this niche market long before it became mainstream. Acer was noticeably the only one that was falling behind, but that all changes today at IFA 2024. With the Nitro Blaze 7, not only is it coming out with its first-ever handheld gaming PC, it’s arriving guns blazing (pun intended) with the latest AMD Ryzen chip boasting powerful AI capabilities to take your experience beyond just gaming.

Designer: Acer

If there’s one area that Intel has pretty much been left behind, it would be the nascent handheld gaming PC race where AMD’s Ryzen has become the chip of choice since the Valve Steam Deck. Conversely, Intel has been ramping up its new AI-powered processors, and AMD is now pushing its Ryzen AI generation to new PCs in every form. Being a bit late does have its share of benefits, and Acer’s first stab at a handheld gaming PC is able to immediately gain the lead in this area, with the new AMD Ryzen 8040 series and Ryzen AI giving the portable computer a needed boost.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8840HS inside the Acer Nitro Blaze 7 boasts 39 AI TOPS (tera or trillion operations per second), putting it in the same league as many AI-powered laptops. Teamed up with the AMD Radeon 780M and 16GB of RAM, you’ve got the makings of a powerful gaming beast that can fit into a small bag. Then there’s the 7-inch 1920×1080 144Hz IPS touch display with 100% sRGB color gamut support, delivering vibrant and bright visuals, even for the darkest of horror games.

What really sets a gaming handheld apart, however, are its controls, which often translate to joysticks and buttons that you’d also see on gamepads. The Acer Nitro Blaze 7 also features touchscreen support for more direct interaction with UI elements on the screen, while the traditional joysticks and d-pad offer more precise control. There’s also a dedicated hotkey that brings players to their game libraries without having to fumble with half a dozen menus and screens. This customized Acer Game Space feature fixes one of the biggest pain points of Windows gaming: managing titles from different platforms and sources.

The Acer Nitro Blaze 7’s straightforward and simple design eschews complicated and extraneous details that only get in the way of you and your favorite games. With its arrival, the roster of major handheld gaming PC brands is more or less now complete, heating up the competition for the market’s most powerful gaming machine in the smallest form factor. Availability details for the Acer Nitro Blaze 7 handheld gaming PC will vary by market and have yet to be confirmed.

AI is fast becoming a thing on desktop and laptop computers, even on those devices that aren’t used for heavy computation or heavy content creation. Whether it’s generating images for inspiration, making sense of documents, or optimizing performance, AI is starting to become a prevalent presence in computing, but those features seem to benefit only those with enough resources to spend on a powerful but pricey rig. Good technology shouldn’t just be for a select few, and ASUS is working with Qualcomm to make not just AI but multi-day battery life more accessible to everyone with new mobile computers powered by the new Snapdragon X Plus.

Designer: ASUS

ASUS ProArt PZ13

Right at the top of that list is the new ASUS ProArt PZ13, first shown off at Computex back in June. It’s a 2-in-1 tablet with a detachable keyboard cover and kickstand, not unlike some of the popular designs for these portable PCs. What makes it extra special is the silicon inside, the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Plus, an octa-core variant of the chipmaker’s latest line that targets not smartphones that run Android but Windows computers. What it lacks in raw power compared to the Snapdragon X1 Elite it makes up for in a balanced performance per watt, delivering long battery life while still supporting AI features thanks to its Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and integrated graphics processor.

As part of ASUS’ ProArt family, the ProArt PZ13 caters to digital content creators like designers, artists, streamers, and writers. These users benefit from the computer’s highly portable design, only 9mm thick and weighing only 1.87 lbs. The 70Wh battery makes the lack of nearby power outlets less of a worry, especially if you can charge it via USB-C. The IP52 dust and water resistance, along with MIL-STD-810H certification, also takes away some of the fear when using this AI-powered creativity machine outside of your office or home. And with the same sleek Nano Black coating we saw on the ASUS ProArt PX13, you will definitely want to show it off outdoors.

Of course, as a creative tool, the screen is a critical factor, and the ProArt PZ13 doesn’t disappoint with its bright and vibrant 13.3-inch 3K (2880×1800) Lumina OLED display. ASUS lets you control every aspect of that display, from the color gamut it uses down to color calibration. The ProArt PZ13 also includes a suite of software that really showcases its AI chops, including StoryCube for managing photos and videos. Creativity no longer has to be tethered to desks and power outlets thanks to the ASUS ProArt PZ13 and Snapdragon X Plus.

ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507)

Those who want a more traditional laptop form factor will be happy with the ASUS Vivobook S 15, also powered by that Snapdragon X Plus AI process and boasting more than 18 hours of uptime with its 70Wh battery. The 15-inch 3K 120Hz Lumina OLED screen will also delight content creators who need precise and accurate color reproduction, especially with support for 100% of the industry standard DCI-P3 gamut. A plethora of connectivity options, both wired and wireless, make working anywhere a breeze, and its slim and stylish design makes it a joy to bring out in public.

Best of all, these two Snapdragon Windows computer carry accessible price tags that make them tempting options for your next mobile computer. The ASUS Vivobook S 15 (S5507) will start at $899.99, while the ProArt PZ13 starts at $1,099.99.

From Track to Timepiece: Rolex’s Enduring Influence on Motorsport and Automotive Excellence

19 août 2024 à 22:32

As a guest of Rolex at the 2024 Concours d’Elegance during Monterey Car Week, I experienced a seamless blend of history and innovation against the picturesque setting of Pebble Beach. The event showcased classic and contemporary automotive art, with Rolex’s influence evident throughout, reflecting their commitment to precision, tradition, and forward-thinking design. From meticulously restored vintage cars to unveiling futuristic designs, the festivities highlighted Rolex’s dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. My time there deepened my appreciation for the artistry in automotive design and emphasized Rolex’s role in linking the past, present, and future of motoring. In the following discussion, I’ll explore how Rolex’s legacy continues to shape the world of motorsport and automotive culture, as I experienced firsthand at this year’s memorable festivities.

Designer: Rolex

Rolex: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation

Rolex embodies luxury, precision, and lasting craftsmanship. Founded by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London in 1905, it has evolved into a global icon. Originally known as Wilsdorf & Davis, the company specialized in distributing timepieces before focusing on manufacturing.

Rolex: The first waterproof and dustproof wristwatch by Rolex in 1926.

In 1908, Rolex was registered, and Wilsdorf set out to create elegant and reliable wristwatches. This pursuit led to developing the first waterproof wristwatch, the Rolex Oyster, in 1926. The Oyster case was a groundbreaking innovation, protecting the watch’s movement from dust, moisture, and pressure, ensuring its accuracy even in challenging conditions.

Innovation continued with the introduction of the Perpetual rotor in 1931, the world’s first self-winding mechanism powered by the natural motion of the wrist. This advancement set Rolex apart in the luxury watch market, marking another significant milestone in horology.

Rolex’s drive for precision is evident in its rigorous testing processes. Every Rolex watch undergoes stringent tests for accuracy, water resistance, and endurance, earning the brand its reputation for reliability. Certified as Superlative Chronometers by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), these timepieces highlight Rolex’s dedication to exceptional performance.

Over the decades, Rolex has introduced pioneering innovations that have solidified its reputation in watchmaking. In 1945, Rolex unveiled the Datejust, the first wristwatch to display the date on the dial, marking a significant leap forward in both functionality and design. The Submariner followed in 1953 as the first dive watch to be waterproof to a depth of 100 meters, made possible by the robust Oyster case—a marvel of engineering that ensures the watch’s durability and water resistance under extreme conditions.

Rolex also revolutionized the watch bracelet with the introduction of the Oyster bracelet, known for its strength and comfort, and the Jubilee bracelet, which combines style and flexibility, offering unmatched wearability. In recent years, Rolex introduced the Oysterflex bracelet, a sophisticated combination of flexible titanium and nickel alloy metal blade covered with high-performance elastomer, providing a new level of comfort without sacrificing durability.

Today, Rolex leads the world of luxury and precision, with each watch representing a blend of cutting-edge technology and timeless design. The brand’s legacy thrives on relentless innovation, uncompromising quality, and an enduring pursuit of perfection.

Rolex’s Timeless Connection with Motorsport

In the 1930s, Sir Malcolm Campbell, the renowned British racing driver known as the “King of Speed,” forged a powerful connection between high-speed racing and precision timekeeping. On Sept. 3, 1935, at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, Campbell made history by becoming the first person to break the 300 mph barrier, reaching 301.13 mph. During this groundbreaking feat, he relied on the Rolex Oyster. This watch demonstrated remarkable resilience and accuracy under extreme conditions, marking the beginning of a lasting bond between motorsport and Rolex.

At the time of Sir Malcolm Campbell’s record-breaking feats, the Rolex Oyster was still establishing its reputation. Campbell’s choice of the Rolex Oyster during his high-speed attempts significantly contributed to proving its reliability. His successes, supported by the watch’s consistent performance during these demanding moments, played a crucial role in forging Rolex’s longstanding association with motorsport. This partnership began a deep connection between Rolex and the world of speed, precision, and endurance.

In 1959, Rolex became the official timekeeper for the newly established Daytona International Speedway, cementing its role in motorsport. This partnership eventually led to the creation of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph in 1963, later famously known as the ‘Daytona.’ The watch was designed specifically for racing drivers, featuring a tachymetric scale on the bezel that allowed drivers to measure average speed over a specific distance—a crucial function in motorsports.

The Daytona’s design and functionality made it a legend in the racing world, and its connection to the speedway secured Rolex’s place in motorsport history. The watch became an icon cherished by racing enthusiasts and collectors. Over the years, Rolex’s involvement in motorsport deepened, particularly in endurance racing.

The Rolex 24 at Daytona is a grueling 24-hour endurance race that pushes drivers and machines to their limits. In 1992, Rolex became the title sponsor, reinforcing its commitment to precision and performance. This race demands unwavering focus and high-speed consistency, with drivers rotating through shifts to keep their cars moving. The parallels between this endurance and the reliability expected from Rolex watches are clear—both are engineered to perform under pressure, whether on the track or in daily life, reflecting the brand’s dedication to durability and precision.

Endurance races like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans challenge drivers and vehicles alike, requiring intense stamina and flawless reliability. These events demand high performance from every component, with drivers battling fatigue and maintaining focus under extreme conditions. Similarly, Rolex mechanical watches are designed to endure, keeping precise time through years of use and the rigors of daily wear. This shared commitment to enduring performance solidifies Rolex’s role in motorsport, where reliability is paramount.

Image: Rolex

Rolex expanded its involvement in endurance racing further in 2001 when it became the Official Timepiece of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, one of the world’s most famous and challenging races. The winners of Le Mans receive a specially engraved Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, a highly coveted prize that symbolizes both endurance and excellence.

In 2016, Rolex became the Official Timepiece of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), strengthening its role in endurance racing. This partnership reflects Rolex’s support for the evolution of endurance racing and its focus on technological innovation, a value shared by the WEC.

Rolex’s Enduring Influence at Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Monterey Car Week traces its roots to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which debuted in 1950 alongside the Pebble Beach Road Race. From modest beginnings, it has grown into the world’s most prestigious gathering of automotive artistry, attracting premier collectors, fans, and enthusiasts globally. This event honors and preserves automotive heritage, showcasing vehicles that illustrate the highest standards of design and engineering. This year, the coveted Best in Show winner receives the new Rolex 1908, a timepiece that reflects both the event’s tradition and Rolex’s enduring dedication to quality and innovation.

Image: Rolex

In 1997, Rolex became the official timepiece of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, establishing a partnership that bridges the worlds of watchmaking and automotive history. Rolex’s involvement extends to other hallmark events, such as The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

Hurley Haywood is regarded as one of the most accomplished endurance racers in history. His illustrious career includes five overall victories at the Rolex 24 at Daytona (1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, and 1991), showcasing his dominance in one of motorsport’s most grueling endurance races. In addition to his successes at Daytona, Haywood also claimed victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times (1977, 1983, and 1994), and he won the 12 Hours of Sebring twice (1973 and 1981).

Hurley Haywood at the Corkscrew of Laguna Seca

Hurley Haywood’s legendary racing career, marked by numerous victories, makes him the perfect namesake for the Hurley Haywood Trophy at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This award honors drivers who embody Haywood’s skill and dedication, aligning with Rolex’s values of precision and performance. As a Rolex Testimonee, Haywood’s association reinforces Rolex’s commitment to motorsport excellence. Beyond his personal achievements, Haywood has mentored the next generation of drivers, sharing his knowledge and passion. The Hurley Haywood Trophy celebrates his legacy and the broader history of motorsport, further solidifying the deep connection between Rolex and the racing community.

Wrapping Up

Rolex’s presence in motorsport and classic cars goes beyond the surface, symbolizing a deep-seated commitment to precision and excellence. The brand has become synonymous with achievement and timeless craftsmanship, from its early partnership with legendary drivers to its pivotal role in events like the Rolex 24 at Daytona and Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. By maintaining a balance between innovation and tradition, Rolex upholds its reputation across generations. Whether on a driver’s wrist or marking time at a prestigious event, Rolex stands as a lasting emblem of dedication to the highest standards.

Concours Chairman Sandra Button highlighted the significance of this victory, noting that this particular Type 59 is a rare factory race car with multiple Grand Prix victories to its name. This car has connections to some of the greatest racing legends and even ties to royalty. What makes it even more extraordinary is that it remains preserved in the livery given to it by King Leopold of Belgium, showcasing its authentic and original character.

The Bugatti Type 59 Sports stands as a masterpiece of automotive artistry. Bugatti, renowned for its pursuit of excellence, crafted the Type 59 as a sublime blend of elegance and power. Its design exudes refined style, boasting a low-slung body, intricate wire wheels, and the distinctive growl of its 3.3-liter engine. This vehicle exemplifies the pinnacle of collaboration between engineers and designers. Its triumph as a preservation car at Pebble Beach highlights the enduring value of originality and historical authenticity in the world of classic automobiles.

Throughout the years, the car has been in the care of various collectors who have all respected its original state. The current owner, Fritz Burkard, has prioritized keeping this historical piece untouched as much as possible, preserving its patina to honor its rich past. This win at Pebble Beach underscores the car’s historical importance and highlights the significance of maintaining the authenticity of classic automobiles.

The Rolex 1908, awarded to the Best of Show winner, mirrors the Bugatti’s commitment to preserving history while celebrating precision and elegance. Rolex, a brand synonymous with reliability and craftsmanship, introduced the 1908 model as a nod to its rich heritage. The 1908’s design is understated yet undeniably elegant, reflecting the brand’s focus on timeless design rather than fleeting trends. The watch’s movement, with its meticulous attention to detail, ensures that it doesn’t just tell time—it honors it.

This particular Rolex 1908 model, paired with a traditional brown alligator leather strap, is crafted in 18-karat yellow gold and features an intense white dial. The strap is distinguished by its green calfskin lining and tone-on-tone stitching, adding to its luxurious look and feel. The timepiece is also notable for its transparent sapphire case back, which reveals the intricate Caliber 7140 movement, showcasing Rolex’s dedication to precision and aesthetics. The engraving “Best of Show 2024” is discreetly placed on the Dualclasp, a double folding clasp made of 18-karat yellow gold, that sits perfectly centered on the wrist, showcasing the meticulous design and craftsmanship for which Rolex is renowned.

Earlier in the day, before the start of the Concours, Rolex was kind enough to give me a fleeting moment with the 1908, and it’s truly breathtaking. Combining classic elements with cutting-edge technology makes the Rolex 1908 a fitting award for such a prestigious event, perfectly complementing the legacy and elegance of the 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports.

When the Bugatti Type 59 Sports won Best of Show at the 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, it marked more than just a victory for a car—it was a recognition of the enduring appeal of something beautifully crafted. The Rolex 1908, awarded to the winner, complements this achievement perfectly, representing a piece that, like the Bugatti, is treasured for its significance and what it symbolizes.

Both the Bugatti Type 59 Sports and the Rolex 1908 showcase the pinnacle of craftsmanship from their respective eras, blending timeless elegance with cutting-edge engineering. The Bugatti, with its sleek lines and powerful engine, represents the golden age of automotive design, while the Rolex 1908 embodies the precision and sophistication of early 20th-century horology. They remind us that true innovation stands the test of time, inspiring enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Top Design Innovations from Computex 2024: Where Technology Meets Aesthetics

Par : JC Torres
8 juin 2024 à 22:45

One of the world’s biggest computer-centric tech expos has just ended and, unsurprisingly, a lot of the rhetoric revolved around AI. But if you walk around the showroom floor, another theme quickly becomes evident in the midst of new products as well as some not-so-new wares. Consumer tastes have evolved once again, even among those who would embrace the label of being a gamer. Design is no longer just a feature for the few but an important part of a product’s DNA. We’ve seen quite a wide range of designs across an equally wide range of products, from the eccentric to the elegant. Here are some of the most notable designs to grace our paths at Computex 2024 in Taiwan, showcasing not just the trends but also the innovations in the computing industry.

Cool Computing: PC Case Designs

Desktop computers have evolved from uninspiring towers to smoldering workstations with over-the-top lighting to a smorgasbord of designs that cater to a variety of tastes and interests. Computex 2024 is a glowing testament to not only the changes in design trends but also to the extent that some manufacturers will go to in order to appeal to their loyal fans.

ADATA XPG Invader X

Designer: ADATA

Winner of an iF Design Award, the ADATA XPG Invader X values transparency in more ways than one. Its clear front and side panels let you marvel at the neatly arranged components that power this gaming beast, including the tubes and RGB-lit fans that keep the box operating at maximum efficiency. Equally interesting, however, is the chassis’s ESG-compliant design, utilizing post-consumer recycled plastics and upgrade-friendly components. It’s a stylish, eco-friendly computer that tries to offset the carbon emissions of your gaming lifestyle.

Cooler Master Mecha Cases

Designer: Cooler Master

Who said computers needed to come in the form of boxes? Cooler Master definitely didn’t. With designs that come in the form of a robotic shark and a giant mechanical sneaker, these PC cases shatter expectations and misconceptions about how our computers should look like. And as hardware becomes smaller even as they become more powerful, it’s only a matter of time before these become the standard rather than the outlier.

PNY Aftershock Bubble Tea PC

Designer: PNY x AftershockPC

Electronics and liquids don’t mix but it becomes a mind-blowing mystery when you see the two together. And now, we don’t mean liquid cooling. From the makers of ramen-themed desktop towers, this Bubble Tea PC will have you not only scratching your head but also craving a cup of boba. Instead of a sugary and milky drink, however, it’s a luscious-colored coolant that has faux tapioca balls swirling around as it keeps your cool-looking PC thermally cool. This collab between PC maker PNY and case designer Aftershock isn’t a joke either but a fully functional gaming PC that’s ready to put a new spin on your cravings.

Power In Your Hands: Handheld Gaming PCs

While there are plenty of AI-toting laptops scattered around Computex this year, they are hardly the only computers vying for attention. Gaming handheld PCs are pushing the envelope not only in performance in a small form factor but also in terms of design. There’s definitely plenty of room for experimentation, and there are a few that have caught our attention and fancy.

ADATA XPG Nia

Designer: ADATA

An unexpected contender from a brand better known for its memory and data storage hardware, the XPG Nia focuses on the aspects often left out in the wake of specs and benchmarks. A tilting screen, for example, can drastically improve the comfort of staring at a handheld computer for long periods of time, while upgradable RAM in addition to upgradable storage gives the device a longer life than even some of the smartphones we have today.

ASUS ROG Ally X

Designer: ASUS ROG

The ASUS ROG Ally X is a fine example of refinement over sensational changes. The base design remains the same, but the subtle and sometimes invisible improvements deliver an almost totally different experience that’s a step above in terms of usability. Best of all, however, ASUS isn’t removing the OG ROG Ally from the market just yet, leaving consumers with the choice between affordability and power.

MSI Claw 8 AI+

Designer: MSI

The MSI Claw A1M was an odd one when it came out, but the Claw 8 AI+ cements the manufacturer’s position in the young handheld gaming PC segment. With newer, AI-friendlier hardware comes significant improvements that are necessary for such a small gaming device. It’s still rather unique in its use of Intel silicon, and it will live or die by that commitment. Its design, however, is also enough to make it a noteworthy contender in this fast-growing arena.

ZOTAC ZONE

Designer: ZOTAC

ZOTAC is another new contender, one that has its sights set on the name that started it all: the Steam Deck. While it resembles this progenitor in some aspects, the ZOTAC ZONE tries to take the design where Valve seems reluctant to go. Better hardware and configurable controls will sing to the hearts of many gamers, but the steep price tag could be a major deterrent as well.

Material Matters: Aesthetic and Sustainable Designs

Design innovation doesn’t just have to come from wild new forms or combinations of ideas. Even the materials used for products can have a notable positive effect on the user experience, especially when they delight not just the eyes but also other senses like touch. Bonus points if they also benefit the environment, ensuring there will still be a planet for consumers to live on.

ASUS Ceraluminum

Designer: ASUS

Laptop users are becoming more and more design-conscious. Even those who don’t tend to personalize the backs of their laptops want it to be something that will leave a lasting positive impression on bystanders, not to mention on themselves. Combining the durability of metal with the luxury of ceramic, ASUS’s new Ceraluminum material subtly elevates the laptop from a technological product to an art object. First used on the new ASUS Zenbook S 16, this material exudes beauty that you not only see but also feel every time you touch the laptop or lift its lid.

TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Design Edition

Designer: TECNO

Paying homage to both coffee lovers and environment-conscious consumers, TECNO and LOEWE designed a back cover material that gives waste coffee grounds new life. Using an equally eco-friendly process, this more sustainable material gives the TECNO CAMON 30 Series LOEWE Design Edition a distinctive appearance and texture that easily sets itself apart from the crowd. Plus, the use of color blocking also marks the phone with a modern style to fit the discerning tastes of modern consumers.

Creative License: Tools for Designers

All these wonderful designs don’t just pop out from thin air. Someone has to make them, from initial ideation to prototyping to manufacturing. Designers and creators naturally need tools that can meet the growing complexities of their work, and Computex definitely has quite a few in store for them.

Acer SpatialLabs Eye 3D Camera

Designer: Acer

Spatial computing, mixed reality, and the metaverse require a special kind of content, one that breaks free from the confines of flat, 2D space. Even in video meetings and live selling streams, 3D objects are becoming more in demand, offering not just viewers but also presenters new ways to connect and communicate. Acer’s new SpatialLabs Eye 3D camera tries to democratize that process, effectively giving anyone the ability to capture, record, and stream any real-world 3D object as a digital copy.

ASUS ProArt PZ13 Detachable Laptop

Designer: ASUS

As computers become more powerful and geographical boundaries become shorter, content creation can no longer be confined to a desk in an office or room. The ASUS ProArt PZ13 gives designers, artists, engineers, and everyone in between that kind of flexibility with its portable and detachable design. What makes this 2-in-1 computer different is that it’s part of the new breed of Windows computers running on the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X chip, promising improved performance and, of course, on-device AI capabilities.

Power to the User: Empowering Gamers and Creators

One thing that gamers, creators, and power users have in common is their need for power, both literally and figuratively. The ability to customize not only their experience but also the appearance of their equipment goes a long way in giving them the confidence to get their job done, and these designs definitely deliver that with a touch of pizzazz!

ASUS Project DALI E Ink Cover Laptop

Designer: ASUS

E Ink is no longer just for eBook readers. Now that it has color and is being used in signage, the eye-friendly and power-efficient display technology is finding its way to the most unexpected places, like the back of this laptop concept. Project DALI turns the laptop cover into a canvas for users of all walks of life to express themselves or simply have a different design every day if they want. All without draining the battery even when the laptop isn’t running.

ASUS ROG Mjolnir Portable UPS

Designer: ASUS ROG

Nothing scares a gamer or designer more than losing power in the middle of an intense playing or working session. Uninterruptible power supplies are a staple for these people, but if you’ll be getting one, why settle for a boring box when you can have one of the most powerful weapons in the universe? Shaped after the mythological hammer of Thor, the ROG Mjolnir is a power station with an attitude and, more importantly, the power and features to actually match.

Cooler Master MasterHUB Modular Stream Kit

Designer: Cooler Master

A typical computer keyboard has 87 to 101 keys or more, but sometimes even those aren’t enough for content creators, streamers, gamers, and advanced computer users. When you have to remember a bunch of keyboard shortcuts that differ from program to program, you’re putting a heavy burden on your mind that could be used for actual creative thinking instead. This modular MasterHUB stream kit and control center not only offers the power of programmable buttons but also lets you decide how you want those controls to be arranged and look.

ASUS ROG Ally X gaming handheld PC brings small changes that have a big impact

Par : JC Torres
2 juin 2024 à 09:00

After numerous leaks and rumors, the cat is finally out of the bag. The next ASUS Republic of Gamers handheld PC isn’t the Ally 2 but the ROG Ally X as expected. While some might see it as simply splitting hairs, the naming does make a difference. It still has the beating heart of the first ROG Ally, but with a few extras that respond to the criticisms and requests of the gaming community who embraced this more portable form factor right off the bat. From some perspectives, those extras are really small and subtle, especially if looking at it from the outside. But with enough of those changes working together, the ROG Ally X is positioning itself to be a more powerful companion that will let you play more games longer.

Designer: ASUS ROG

Just from a glance, you might not be able to tell that this is in any way different from the OG ROG Ally, at least except for its new all-black motif. It still boggles the mind why ASUS chose white for its first iteration, a color that’s almost alien to gamers’ palettes, though it did help the ROG Ally stand out from its rivals. If you look more closely, however, and hold the device in your hands, you might notice how things are somewhat different, hopefully for the better.

The handles, for example, are rounder now, which helps improve the grip that’s critical to a handheld device. The back triggers now come at an angle for better ergonomics, while the joystick and D-pad have been improved to be more durable and more precise. The biggest changes, however, are on the inside, where every little thing counts if it’s meant to improve the gaming experience.

It’s still the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme as the original ROG Ally, but that mobile gaming processor is now paired with 24GB of DDR-7500 RAM, up from 16GB in the first iteration. The storage capacity has been doubled to up to 1TB, but the bigger surprise is that ASUS is making it easier to upgrade it. The battery has also been doubled to 80Wh, which means you’ll have more time playing before you need to plug the little monster in. To compensate for this newfound power, ASUS ROG promises an improved thermal cooling solution so you won’t burn your hand while you play.

There is at least one change that some might consider a downgrade, depending on how attached they’ve become to ASUS’ proprietary XG external graphics port. In its place, the ROG Ally X uses a more standard Thunderbolt-compatible USB-C port that could still work with external GPUs but also with a lot more devices as well. Given all these changes, it’s no surprise that the ASUS ROG Ally X will cost more than its predecessor at $799.99. Then again, this version is squarely aimed at power gamers, and those who can live with the bare minimum can still get the older model, at least for now.
