Waymo’s Self-Driving Car Saw the Flood and Drove In Anyway. Here’s The Problem Plaguing Every Robotaxi.

Every sensor on a Waymo robotaxi sees the world in layers. The LiDAR maps it in three dimensions, radar bounces through it, and cameras read it in color and contrast, building a composite picture of the road that no human retina could match at the same fidelity. So when a Waymo encountered a flooded section of a 40 mph road in San Antonio on April 20, the car absolutely saw the water. It slowed down for it. Then it drove in anyway, floated off the road surface, and came to rest in Salado Creek. The voluntary recall Waymo filed with NHTSA on April 30, covering 3,791 vehicles, was triggered not by a sensor that missed a hazard, but by a software stack that saw the hazard clearly and still chose the wrong response.

You might be sitting in one of those 3,791 recalled vehicles right now, somewhere in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, or Atlanta, and Waymo has confirmed the permanent software fix is still in development. Tesla’s Cybercab, entering production at Giga Texas, runs a supervised robotaxi service in Austin, Dallas, and Houston on a pure-vision architecture with no LiDAR whatsoever. Uber’s platform in Dallas is dispatching Avride-operated Hyundai Ioniq 5s that are currently under NHTSA investigation for 16 crashes involving lane changes and failure to stop for traffic ahead. Amazon’s Zoox uses cameras, LiDAR, radar, and long-wave infrared on every vehicle, the most sensor-redundant consumer-facing stack in the industry, and is still in limited city testing. Each platform has a different answer to what a self-driving car should do when it encounters something it cannot traverse, and after the San Antonio creek, all of those answers deserve a much closer look.

The NHTSA recall notice characterizes the flaw precisely: the software “may allow the vehicle to slow and then drive into standing water on higher speed roadways.” That is a classification error buried in the decision stack, not a sensor failure, and the distinction matters more than the recall number suggests. Waymo’s 5th-gen Jaguar I-Pace and 6th-gen Zeekr RT both carry LiDAR, radar, and cameras in overlapping fields of view, and the San Antonio car processed the flooded road accurately as a hazard worth responding to. The decision architecture, however, had no hard-stop condition for water on a 40 mph road, only a caution flag that reduced speed and left proceeding as an available output. A separate Waymo had already been stranded near McCullough Avenue in San Antonio roughly two weeks before the April 20 incident, confirming this was a repeatable failure mode across a fleet that was still carrying passengers in nine other cities.

Tesla’s Cybercab carries no LiDAR, putting its supervised fleet in Austin, Dallas, and Houston in a fundamentally different position when floodwater appears than Waymo’s overlapping sensor stack would. The platform relies on eight cameras and 4D millimeter-wave radar, meaning no independent depth-sensing channel exists to assess water severity when camera visibility degrades in heavy rain. A real-world FSD 14.3.1 test in April 2026 ended in manual takeover when the front bumper camera submerged, a precise illustration of where the vision-only approach runs out of information. Avride, dispatching Hyundai Ioniq 5s through Uber’s Dallas app since December, is under concurrent NHTSA investigation for 16 crashes involving lane changes and failures to stop for road hazards, all 16 occurring with a trained safety monitor seated in the vehicle. Amazon’s Zoox sits at the opposite end of the sensor redundancy spectrum, combining cameras, LiDAR, radar, and long-wave infrared in a 360-degree array with a human TeleGuidance fallback for scenarios the stack cannot resolve, though its commercial footprint remains a fraction of Waymo’s.

The Waymo recall, the Avride probe, and a dashcam video of a Waymo rolling through a red light on Irving Boulevard in Dallas all surfaced in the same seven-day window, collectively mapping the same design gap across three platforms: a perception-to-action pipeline that detects a hazard but generates the wrong response to it. Waymo’s OTA patch is deploying now, but the permanent fix remains in development, meaning every current ride runs on interim constraints rather than a finished solution. The San Antonio incident involved an empty car, and that is the only reason this story ends with a recovery operation rather than a casualty report. Each platform carrying passengers today is still writing its edge-case rulebook, publishing each new chapter only after something breaks on a live road. Knowing which system you are riding in, what its sensor stack can assess in a sudden storm, and whether its flood-detection logic has been patched from an interim fix to an actual solution is, I’d argue, the most practical safety question a passenger can ask in 2026.

We covered LUMO hands-on at CES 2026 and came away calling it “genuinely novel in a category that’s seen mostly incremental tweaks for decades.” Far-infrared radiation transfers energy directly into food molecules rather than heating surrounding air first, which is how the LUMO reaches cooking temperature in a fraction of a second, using four precision reflectors to deliver full surround heating from multiple angles, cooking up to 4x faster than traditional appliances, without long preheat times or outdoor setups. Traditional contact grills heat the plate and then conduct that energy into the protein surface, a fundamentally different thermal pathway that drives more moisture out of food in the process. The Roomba Guy Just Built a Robot Pet You Might Actually Love

If you’ve ever watched your Roomba bump helplessly into a chair leg for the third time and thought, “I deserve better from my robots,” you’re not alone. And apparently, neither did Colin Angle. The co-founder of iRobot, the man who essentially put a hockey puck-shaped vacuum in millions of homes, left the company in 2024 with a new question rattling around in his head: what if a robot could actually feel like it cares about you? The answer is the Familiar, the first prototype from his new startup, Familiar Machines & Magic. And it is not your average robot.

Picture a creature somewhere between a soft-eared dog and a round, slightly abstract bear. It has four legs, huge paws, and doe eyes that make it immediately charming in a way that no Roomba ever attempted to be. It’s furry, expressive, and was designed with the help of former Disney Imagineers, which explains why it looks like it belongs in an animated feature rather than a tech showcase. The Familiar has 23 degrees of freedom, meaning it can wiggle its ears, tilt its head, and wag a small nub of a tail with the kind of fluidity that feels less mechanical and more… alive. Its coat is touch-sensitive, built specifically to encourage physical interaction between you and it.

Designer: Familiar Machines & Magic

It also doesn’t talk. That detail feels deliberate and, to me, very smart. Voice assistants have trained us to think of robots as tools we command. The Familiar is going for something completely different. It’s designed to read your tone of voice, your body language, your overall energy, and respond accordingly. Angle calls it “Consumer Physical AI,” and while the label sounds like something off a product white paper, the idea behind it is genuinely compelling.

The name itself is worth noting. A “familiar” in folklore refers to the supernatural animal companion of a witch or magical figure, a creature bonded to a person not through ownership but through genuine connection. Angle’s team chose that name deliberately, and I think it sets the tone for what they’re trying to build. The goal isn’t to sell you a novelty gadget. It’s to create a new kind of relationship between humans and machines, one built on trust, attentiveness, and something approaching care.

Now, I’ll be upfront: I have feelings about this. Part of me finds it genuinely beautiful as a design concept. The Familiar was clearly approached the way good industrial design should be, with deep thought about how an object makes you feel, not just what it does. The choice to make it animal-like rather than humanoid is interesting, too. There’s far less of the uncanny valley unease that tends to follow humanoid robots around, and more of the universal warmth that most people already extend toward animals.

But another part of me wonders about the emotional stakes here. We’re already watching people form attachments to AI chatbots. A touch-sensitive, furry, expressive robot that mirrors your emotional state is a much more potent version of that. Angle has said he wants it to feel like the machine actually cares about him. That’s a lovely vision. It’s also a design brief that puts enormous responsibility on the creators to get it right, because the flip side of emotional bonding is emotional dependence.

Still, I’d be lying if I said the Familiar didn’t make me curious in the best possible way. The prototype images are almost disarmingly sweet. It looks like something you’d want sitting on the couch next to you while you read, or settled quietly in the corner while you work. If any robot was ever designed to move through your life rather than just function within it, this might be it.

The Familiar is still in the prototype stage, with no confirmed price or release date. But as debut concepts go, it’s a strong one. Whether or not it ever makes it into our homes, it raises questions about what we actually want from the machines we live with. And those questions feel well overdue.

The split air conditioner is one of the least loved objects in any home, which is a strange thing to say about something most people couldn’t live without. It works, technically, but it tends to make its presence known in all the wrong ways. The air is too direct, the noise is a constant background irritant, and the plastic box on the wall rarely belongs in any thoughtfully designed interior.

From that frustration comes WellFlow, a concept that reframes what air conditioning is supposed to do for the people living around it. Rather than engineering a better cooling box, the designers built something closer to a wellness device. It’s a concept that received validation through the iF Design Award in 2026 and was first revealed at IFA Berlin 2025.

The most immediate shift is in how air actually moves. Conventional units push output in one direction, landing directly on whoever is in the room. Beyond airflow, the system also handles humidity, air purity, ambient lighting, and sound. A built-in humidifier balances moisture levels rather than leaving the air artificially dry, which is one of the most common complaints about running a conventional unit through the night. Circadian lighting and integrated speakers complete the picture, creating conditions that support sleeping, concentrating, or quietly winding down, depending on what the moment calls for.

All of this adjusts automatically. The system continuously monitors temperature, humidity, and air quality, then fine-tunes its output without any manual input. A baby’s room needs different conditions than a home office or a gym corner, and WellFlow is designed to recognize those differences. Its behavior was shaped through user research spanning new parents, older adults, and people with respiratory sensitivities, groups that conventional air conditioners routinely fail to address.

The physical form is just as deliberate as the behavior. Most air conditioners are conspicuously technical, with plastic housings that fight against any interior aesthetic. WellFlow uses a woven textile front panel with rounded corners and a matte finish, giving it a material quality far more associated with furniture than appliances. An ambient light halo behind the unit softly signals its presence on the wall without demanding any attention.

A pull-out front filter makes maintenance visible and intuitive, addressing something the design team identified as a recurring trust issue with conventional units. Headphones and earbuds have, over the last couple of years, become staples of this fast-paced world for good reason. The little audio gear essentials can do a multitude of tasks with just the push of a tactile button or pinch gesture. They can trigger smart assistant support for a smarter you, and if this concept were to be imagined, they can give you a pair of smart eyes, too.

The idea of a pair of earbuds with integrated cameras is not new, as Emil Lukas imagined, and now another concept reinforces the merit in having a pair of lenses on earbuds. Dubbed Lightwear, the earbuds look something straight out of a sci-fi flick, but underneath, they are a pair of smart assistant earphones that enhance your environmental perception in real time.

Touted as the world’s first AI-powered earphones, Lightwear comes with a set of HD camera lenses to expand the sense perception as a vision module to interpret the surroundings and deliver the desired result. One can detail them via voice command about any information required in real time, and the buds respond with a detailed set of instructions or navigation guidance. Having gesture control support, the buds can control the connected home devices remotely using just gesture commands. All the data fed into the smart data system is end-to-end encrypted and stored locally. For enhanced privacy and protection, the sensitive data is automatically cleared on a scheduled cycle.

Compared to Emil’s version, these earbuds have a very downplayed camera presence, which I prefer. They look and feel just like any normal earbud, but have a function that makes them stand out from most pairs of earbuds that have the predictable features. Unlike other AI-powered earbuds, these stand true to their name as they come with the added visual apparatus to put forth better results. The use of AI functions is not limited to the earbuds, since the charging case does the same. This removes the use-case scenario to just when the earbuds are being worn. Loaded with highly sensitive microphones, the AI features can be triggered anytime the user wants. Privacy is also taken care of, as the user can opt to activate the fingerprint unlock module to prevent any unauthorized use.

These have an over-the-ear design, reminiscent of the way IEMs sit flush on the ears. The battery resides in those lobes, and although the designers don’t specifically talk about the usage time, these should last longer than TWS earbuds. Nor is there a specific word about the sound quality, ANC levels, or the app features. But then it’s just a concept centred on the form factor and usability.

Designer Mehrnaz Amouei looked at that trajectory and asked a fundamentally different question: what if we built AI to be more present instead? The result is POCO, a soft robotic companion that might be one of the most quietly radical design concepts to emerge in recent years. It doesn’t talk over you, doesn’t flood you with information, and it doesn’t pretend to know things it doesn’t know. POCO sits with you. Literally.

At its core, POCO is a soft, tactile object that pairs with a smartphone, which serves as its computational brain and face. A soft textile body wraps around the device, transforming rigid, glass-and-metal technology into something that moves, breathes, and gestures in response to your presence. Together, they create something that sits somewhere between object, creature, and companion, and that deliberate ambiguity is very much intentional. You’re not quite sure what to call it, and that’s entirely the point.

Amouei developed POCO through research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, grounding the project in studies on loneliness and trust. Her findings indicated that people don’t actually want AI that projects certainty or control. They want availability and responsiveness. They want something that shows up without taking over. From those findings came the concept of “constructive interdependence,” a design philosophy where POCO’s limitations aren’t bugs to be patched but features embedded directly into the interaction model itself. The robot communicates what it can and cannot do through its behavior and physical states, which is a level of honesty you don’t often get from technology that typically overpromises and underdelivers.

I think that matters more than it might initially seem. The dominant conversation around AI right now is almost entirely about expansion: more capability, more integration, more autonomy. POCO pushes back on that without being preachy about it. It reframes the question of what good AI design actually looks like, and the answer it offers isn’t “smarter,” it’s “more trustworthy.” That is a genuinely different value system, and it feels overdue.

The sustainability dimension is also worth paying attention to. Rather than introducing new hardware and generating more electronic waste, POCO repurposes a device most people already own. That decision isn’t just a nice bonus; it’s built into the concept from the start, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals around mental well-being and responsible consumption. In product design terms, that means the project was developed with a broader cultural and environmental context in mind, not just a user persona sitting in a lab.

Physically, POCO responds to touch, movement, and environmental cues. It adapts to a user’s preferences while maintaining a consistent identity, which is a surprisingly nuanced balance to strike in any product, let alone one sitting at the intersection of soft robotics and emotional design. Because interaction happens through touch rather than voice commands or screen taps, there’s an intentional slowing down embedded in the experience. You can’t rush a tactile exchange the same way you can type faster or speak louder. That shift from speed to presence feels like a meaningful counter-proposal to how most tech is currently designed. We’ve grown so accustomed to interfaces that demand our attention that a device asking only for our company reads almost as radical.

POCO has already earned an Honorable Mention from the International Design Awards and drawn coverage from major design publications. Whether it ever moves into consumer production remains an open question. But as a design statement, it’s doing exactly what the best concept work should: prompting us to reconsider what we actually want from the technology we live with, and whether expanding capability was ever really the right goal. Maybe the most interesting AI isn’t the one that knows the most. Maybe it’s the one that knows when to just stay close.

A Tiny Pinwheel Is Doing What AI Giants Won’t

London-based creative studio Oio wants to change that, starting with a small 3D-printed box and a bright yellow pinwheel. Their project, the Hot Air Factory, is a domestic AI device that processes your questions and requests locally, without connecting to the cloud, and every time it thinks, it physically exhales. Hot air pushes out of the top of the device and spins that cheerful little pinwheel. The harder it thinks, the faster it spins. You’re watching computation happen in real time, which turns out to be a surprisingly powerful thing.

AI companies have very little incentive to make their energy costs legible to users. Invisibility is convenient. It keeps things frictionless. It keeps you prompting without thinking about the bill. A report from the US Department of Energy projected that by 2028, data centers could account for 12% of total electricity consumed in the US. That’s not a small number, and it keeps growing every time we treat AI like it runs on good intentions and cloud magic.

Designed in collaboration with Danish furniture maker Pedestal, PlayStation Norway has introduced a statement accessory that celebrates gaming culture as much as it serves a functional purpose. The Moon Legacy Edition TV stand arrives in a muted “Legacy Gray” finish that reflects the iconic tone of the original PlayStation console. The visual connection immediately creates a retro aesthetic, making it particularly appealing for collectors who appreciate the history of gaming as much as the hardware itself.

Two-wheelers have always demanded a certain level of skill and balance from riders, especially at low speeds or when navigating crowded city streets. OMO X by Omoway attempts to change that equation by introducing what the company describes as the world’s first mass-produced self-balancing electric motorcycle. Designed around advanced robotics and artificial intelligence, the new age electric bike blends traditional scooter convenience with autonomous technology that aims to make urban mobility easier and safer.

At the core of the two-wheeler is Omoway’s newly introduced OMO-ROBOT architecture, a full-stack control platform that integrates sensors, perception systems, decision-making software, and mechanical actuation into a unified framework. The system combines aerospace-grade gyroscope technology with reinforcement-learning models to continuously stabilize the motorcycle. This architecture allows the OMO X to maintain balance on its own, even when stationary, eliminating one of the biggest challenges riders face on two-wheeled vehicles.

Another notable capability is automated parking. Instead of requiring riders to maneuver the bike into tight urban spaces manually, the OMO X can guide itself into a parking spot once a location is selected. The system relies on its self-balancing capability and onboard sensors to navigate safely, a feature that reflects the growing overlap between robotics and personal transportation.

The electric scooter’s futuristic design further reinforces its technological identity. Its sharp, angular styling and distinctive lighting signature give it a modern aesthetic that stands apart from traditional scooters. Production plans for the OMO X are already underway. The company announced that the model has entered mass production following its global launch event in Singapore, with pre-orders expected to open in April 2026. Some challengers land close, most fall short on one or two crucial dimensions, and the cycle repeats. What makes Xiaomi’s return to the laptop space interesting is that the company has been watching all of this from the sidelines for four years, and the Book Pro 14 it just launched in China reads less like a desperate catch-up attempt and more like a deliberate, calculated swing at a very specific gap in the Air’s armor.

Xiaomi has just made a discreet release in the laptop segment after a four-year break, returning with the Book Pro 14, a capable thin-and-light that positions itself as a direct answer to the MacBook Air. The headline spec is the display: a 14.6-inch OLED panel with touchscreen support, 3.1K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. Under the hood, Xiaomi equips the notebook with Intel’s Panther Lake platform, up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 358H, with 24GB RAM on the base configuration and 1TB of SSD storage. Pricing, when converted from Chinese yuan, puts the laptop at approximately $1,275, just over $100 more than a base M5 MacBook Air, and for that small premium you get a higher-resolution 120Hz OLED panel, more RAM, and a more robust port selection.

That is a meaningful difference for anyone who has ever reached for a dongle mid-presentation or had to choose between charging and connecting to a display. Xiaomi’s decision to include a full-size HDMI port and a USB-A jack signals an awareness that real-world desk setups are messier than Apple’s minimalist port philosophy acknowledges. Whether that matters to you depends entirely on your workflow, but it is a deliberate product decision and one that reads as a direct response to a documented frustration with the Air.

The Book Pro 14 achieves a weight of 1.08 kg and a thickness of 14.95 mm through a chassis built from magnesium alloy with a carbon fiber lid. That actually makes it lighter than the M5 MacBook Air, which tips the scales around 1.24 kg, and the thickness is comparable. Keeping the specs cool is a three-channel cooling system incorporating a high-performance fan, a 10,000mm² vapor chamber, and graphene cooling components capable of sustaining 50W of continuous performance. That last figure matters more than it might initially seem. Xiaomi makes bold claims on the Book Pro 14’s battery life, overshooting even the latest M5 MacBook Air by nearly two hours. The 72Wh battery is rated for up to 19.8 hours of continuous use, with the 100W fast charging system capable of restoring 50% in approximately 26 minutes. The MacBook Air M5 posts similarly impressive endurance numbers in real-world use, so this will be a tightly contested dimension. The Intel Panther Lake architecture powering the Book Pro 14 is also the first Intel mobile platform in recent memory that genuinely changes the conversation around Windows laptop efficiency, borrowing a page from Apple’s playbook by targeting the sub-10W idle efficiency range that made the M-series Macs so compelling. Independent testing will be the real arbiter here, but the stated numbers are ambitious enough to take seriously.

The Book Pro 14 is currently only available in China, with no clear indication of a global release date, which severely limits its immediate relevance for the overwhelming majority of potential buyers. Xiaomi has a track record of launching products domestically and gradually expanding to other markets, and given the attention this machine has received in the first 24 hours of coverage, the commercial logic for a global rollout is hard to argue against. The question is timing. If Xiaomi moves quickly, the Book Pro 14 could arrive in Western markets before the M5 MacBook Air has fully consolidated its footprint. If the rollout stalls or gets diluted through regional variants with compromised specs, the window closes. The hardware is genuinely compelling, and the only outstanding question that actually matters is whether Xiaomi’s global distribution ambitions match what the engineering team has clearly delivered.

Snøhetta Built a Metro Station in Riyadh That Reflects the Entire City Back at You

There is a moment, the architects at Snøhetta will tell you, when you step off the train at Qasr AlHokm and look up, and the entire city of Riyadh looks back at you. That is not a metaphor. It is exactly what happens beneath the station’s sweeping, mirror-polished stainless steel canopy, where a 360-degree reflection of the surrounding cityscape floats above commuters like a living panorama. It is disorienting in the best possible way, and entirely intentional.

Completed in 2025, the Qasr AlHokm Metro Station is one of four primary hubs within Riyadh’s expansive new metro network, a system now carrying up to 3.6 million passengers daily since it entered full operation in January 2025. The station sits in the heart of the historic Al Qiri district, adjacent to an Eid prayer field and a mosque, and within walking distance of the old palace grounds, a location that demanded both architectural sensitivity and civic ambition.

Snøhetta, working in collaboration with One Works and Cremonesi Workshop (Crew), first won the competition brief in 2012. The central concept remained remarkably consistent from that early vision: a transit station designed as an open urban plaza, where the threshold between city and subway is dissolved rather than defined. The bowl-shaped canopy, its underside ground to a flawless mirror finish, acts as what the team describes as an urban periscope. From above ground, the city is reflected downward into the station. From below, the underground world is projected back out. “Likewise, if you’re coming from the city, you look up into the canopy, and it mirrors everything that happens below,” explained Snøhetta partner Robert Greenwood.

Sloped terrazzo floors draw visitors naturally under the canopy and into the station’s layered interior. There, a truncated cone-shaped atrium wall, its surface perforated by triangular openings drawn from the regional Najdi architectural tradition, encloses one of the station’s most unexpected gestures: a lush underground garden. In a city defined by heat and aridity, this green pocket offers genuine respite. Indigenous tree planting, natural ventilation, and photovoltaic panels complete a sustainability framework that goes well beyond a token gesture.

The building has not gone unrecognized. In November 2025, the Prix Versailles, presented under the patronage of UNESCO and the International Chamber of Commerce, named Qasr AlHokm one of the seven most beautiful train stations in the world, placing it alongside some of global architecture’s most celebrated transit spaces. What Snøhetta has built here is more than a station. It is a civic room, a place where infrastructure earns the right to be called architecture.
