Motorola’s Patent Isn’t a Phone You Wear, It’s a Watch You Unfold

The idea of merging a smartwatch and a smartphone into a single device has been floating around the industry for years, mostly because the obvious inconvenience is right there: two screens on two separate devices, one tiny and worn on the wrist, the other large and kept in a pocket, each doing essentially half the job the other can’t. The logical question is whether one of those devices could do both jobs depending on the situation.

Motorola’s latest patent, officially registered as US12,693,705 under the title “Pivoting wearable reconfigurable screen,” proposes exactly that. The device starts on the wrist as a conventional smartwatch, its flexible display curved around the band. When more screen real estate is needed, the strap pivots and unfolds, flattening into a short, wide display format that functions as a handheld device. A third configuration folds the bottom quarter into an “L” shape, turning the unit into a self-standing desk display.

The mechanism that makes it possible is the strap itself. Rather than housing a traditional watch face with a fixed display, almost the entire outer surface of the band carries a flexible screen. Worn, it reads like a standard wearable. Removed and unfolded, that same surface becomes the display area of a compact, landscape-oriented device. The pivot point is what separates this from simply being a wrist-wrap phone like earlier concepts.

That distinction matters because Nubia tried the wrist-phone idea back in 2018 with the Alpha, and the result was a fascinating but limited object. The Alpha wrapped a 4.01-inch OLED display around the upper wrist, delivering more screen real estate than any smartwatch before it, but the display stayed wrapped. It curved beautifully, could make calls, take photos, and run apps, but it never transformed into anything. The watch was the watch, full stop.

Motorola’s patent reverses the logic. Rather than making a phone you can wear, it proposes a watch you can unfold. The distinction isn’t purely semantic. A device that starts as a watch and transforms into a handheld is solving a different problem than one that starts as a phone and straps to your wrist. The first carries a reasonable identity in both states; the second always feels like a compromise in one of them.

Nubia Alpha

The Nubia Alpha’s sticking point wasn’t the display, which was genuinely impressive and ahead of its time. It was the software, the battery, and the form factor’s limits in practice. Nubia never took the concept further after the original and a 2020 follow-up. The flexible display remained horizontal and wrist-bound, never taking the step toward becoming a genuinely detachable, self-sufficient screen.

Whether Motorola’s patented concept eventually ships as a real device is a separate question entirely. Patents are filed routinely without becoming products, and this one would require flexible display technology durable enough to handle daily wrist bending and regular unfolding, a battery that fits within strap dimensions, and software that transitions cleanly between modes. None of those are trivial problems.

Still, the direction of thinking has clearly shifted since 2018. Nubia asked what happens when a smartphone lives on your wrist. Motorola is asking what happens when a watch becomes a screen the moment you need one.

Bread that comes out of it tastes like something was genuinely thought about. Because it was.

Broth deepens over a lower flame than you’d expect to produce it. Insta360’s foldable drone patent targets DJI Neo 2 at sub-250g

Insta360 built its reputation on cameras that see in every direction at once. It’s literally in their name. The X series made 360-degree capture accessible; the Luna Ultra brought Leica optics to a handheld gimbal. Flying something, though, is a different category of challenge, and the patent images that appeared in July 2026 show the company working through what a foldable drone looks like with Insta360 DNA. The illustrated design at the bottom shows folding arms, a ring-shaped propeller guard, and a dedicated locking mechanism, a form factor that prioritizes the moment of packing away just as much as the moment of takeoff.

DJI’s Neo 2 has the casual drone segment largely to itself in the sub-250g category, with a rigid one-piece frame and a 19-minute flight time that have made it a reliable default for creators who want aerial footage without the complexity of a serious drone setup. Insta360 entering that space would break what has effectively been a two-player market, with Zero Zero Robotics’ HoverAir as the only real alternative. The folding design alone gives Insta360 a structural argument against the Neo 2; a potential 360-degree camera, if it materializes, would give it a creative one. What a wonderful year for foldables, eh? We’re expecting a folding iPhone in September, and Insta360 might give us a folding drone too!

This isn’t just some forum rumor, either. The patent images (from patent file CN223865117U), which started making the rounds on July 16th and were highlighted by outlets like Tech Court, are pretty specific. They show a drone body with the “Insta360” logo stamped on it, with fully folding arms that tuck into the chassis and a distinctive ring-shaped guard protecting the propellers. There’s even a dedicated locking mechanism detailed, which tells you just how seriously they’re taking the whole “fold-and-go” concept. This is a design that screams it was made to be stuffed into a pocket, not carefully placed in a bespoke case.

But here’s the thing: this isn’t Insta360’s first aerial rodeo. Before they decided to put their own name on a drone, they sent in a scout team under the sub-brand Antigravity. The A1 drone they launched was, frankly, a bit of a monster: a sub-249g drone with a wild dual-lens setup that shot 8K 360-degree video and made the drone itself invisible in the footage. It was a spec-sheet beast and a clear shot across DJI’s bow, proving Insta360 had the engineering chops to compete in the sky. It was their way of testing the waters.

Now, it looks like they’re done testing. This new patent is the second, more direct shot. And here’s the kicker: for a company obsessed with 360-degree video, the patent images don’t show a fisheye lens. At all. It’s a huge question mark hanging over the whole project. Are they hiding the tech, or are they planning to launch a drone that, for the first time, doesn’t have their signature feature? If they’re aiming for a rumored sub-$200 price point, leaving the 360 camera on the cutting room floor might be the only way to get there. It’s a move that would be both shocking and, in a weird way, perfectly logical.

You also can’t forget that this is all happening while the two companies are actively suing each other in China. This isn’t friendly competition; it’s a full-blown hardware rivalry. Insta360 came for DJI’s gimbals, tested the drone market with a sub-brand, and is now preparing a direct assault on DJI’s most accessible drone. With a release window expected somewhere between late 2026 and early 2027, we’re not just watching a new product being born. We’re watching the next chapter in a tech soap opera, and it’s about to get very, very interesting.

Stanley doesn’t make gym equipment… but this stylish kettlebell proves it should

Fill a Stanley tumbler with a yogurt-based smoothie from bottom to top and you actually end up getting an arm workout. A 40oz Stanley cup can weigh close to 4lbs or upwards of 1.5 kilograms if filled to the brim with something dense like a smoothie or a thick latte. Jane Morelli just decided that if she was gonna give her arms a workout, why simultaneously rely on ugly looking kettlebells? Morelli superimposed Stanley’s design language onto kettlebells and the result looks just gorgeous.

Every gym equipment I’ve used has looked boringly functional. The kettlebells at my gym come in bright colors, but that’s just a color-code so you know the difference between a lighter and a heavier kettlebell even if the number on it wears off (it almost always does). Morelli’s design merely bridges two worlds together, and I won’t lie – the results look like the most seamless collab ever imagined. My only gripe is, I wish these kettlebells were actually tumblers too!

Haute gym equipment might not be a category but these kettlebells definitely make a case for it. Each one is styled with chic curves, and a color palette I’d only expect from companies like Hermès or Stanley. Subtle pastel shades, punctuated by just one hot pink color for the yoga-moms who need their gym equipment to be as flashy as their gym outfits. Each kettlebell has a lacquer-like sheen on it, along with the Stanley logo emblazoned on the front, larger than the weight units below it because that’s what matters more. The style statement.

I get that I can sound a little ironic, but I’m all for brand crossovers. (The only time I really object is when Tesla does stuff like manufacturing vodka or whistles because they seem to be obsessed with side quests and not really making any cars). This one piques my fancy because Stanley isn’t just a social statement, it’s perfect for fitness-freaks too who love chugging protein shakes from their 30-40oz cups, or sharing Strava stats superimposed against their Stanley cups just to paint a picture of how much ‘aura’ they have.

Morelli’s done a pretty remarkable job of simply yet effectively distilling Stanley’s brand language onto a piece of gym equipment, without necessarily caricaturing the Stanley cup’s silhouette. The kettlebells have a separate, distinct character, and the dual-band colors on each individual kettlebell represents a palette that feels distinctly high-fashion yet accessible. Quite like the company’s big, beautiful, nearly indestructible tumblers.

G-Shock Just Turned a Japanese Paper Lantern Into Wearable Art

G-Shock has always known how to make a statement. From its reckless-by-design origins in 1983 to its cult status across military barracks, skate parks, and high-fashion runways, the brand has never really needed to justify itself. It just shows up. But with the new Aka-Chochin collection, built around the DW-5600AKA-4 and DW-6900AKA-4, G-Shock isn’t just showing up. It’s glowing.

The concept behind these two watches is, genuinely, one of the more thoughtful design moves I’ve seen from the brand in a while. “Aka-Chochin” translates to “red lantern,” a reference to the traditional paper lanterns that hang outside izakayas, the beloved Japanese taverns where people gather after long days for food, drinks, and the kind of conversation that only happens past 9 p.m. These lanterns, which date back to the early Edo period in the 17th century, weren’t decorative in the precious sense. They were practical and symbolic at once, signaling warmth, welcome, and the specific pleasure of slowing down. Casio took that idea and pushed it into two of its most iconic silhouettes.

The result is unapologetically red. Not a subtle, wine-at-dinner red. A full-on, stop-what-you’re-doing red that covers the resin case, bezel, and band from top to bottom. On paper, it sounds like a lot. In practice, it earns its confidence. Both watches carry kanji characters down the face of the dial, reading “耐衝撃,” which means “shock resistance,” one of G-Shock’s founding promises. The characters are split between the bezel and the LCD display, and when the LED backlight activates, the two halves complete each other like a puzzle piece lighting up from within. It’s a detail you have to see in person to fully appreciate, and it’s the kind of thing that elevates a colorway from a gimmick to a genuine design choice.

The bezels on both models also feature hot-stamped grooves that mimic the ribbed texture of a paper lantern, and that same motif carries through to the edges of the strap. It’s not subtle, but it is cohesive. G-Shock committed to the bit, and the commitment pays off.

Now, I’ll say this upfront: the Aka-Chochin aesthetic is polarizing. All-red anything tends to divide opinion, and a digital watch in this colorway is not trying to blend in. If your instinct is to gravitate toward muted, understated timepieces, these are probably not for you, and that’s fine. But if you’ve ever wanted a watch that reads as confident and culturally curious at the same time, the DW-5600AKA-4 and DW-6900AKA-4 make a genuinely compelling argument.

The choice of silhouettes is also worth noting. The DW-5600 is essentially G-Shock’s origin story made physical, the square case that started everything, a design so clean and deliberate it has barely needed updating in four decades. The DW-6900 is its more expressive sibling, with that distinctive triple-window dial and wider case presence. Pairing both with the same concept gives collectors and casual buyers alike an entry point, whether you’re drawn to the classic restraint of the 5600 or the bolder graphic energy of the 6900.

At $190 each, neither watch is a budget impulse buy, but it’s not a stretch, either. G-Shock has always occupied that interesting middle ground between functional tool watch and cultural artifact, and the Aka-Chochin collection lands squarely in that territory. You’re not just buying a watch that tells time reliably. You’re buying into a very specific idea about where design, heritage, and streetwear culture converge.

Red lanterns were built to be seen at night, to cut through the dark and draw people in. G-Shock’s interpretation of that idea works for the same reason. Bold doesn’t have to mean reckless. Sometimes it just means knowing exactly what you want to say and saying it clearly, wrist and all.

Phone Cases Are Boring, This One Puts a Living Terrarium Inside

Phone cases have largely settled into two camps: the ones that protect your phone without anyone noticing they exist, and the ones that make a statement with printed graphics, colors, or textures. Neither approach has found a way to make the back of a phone genuinely interesting rather than just decorated. Designer Daniel Idle found a third option that neither camp seems to have considered.

The Terrarium Phone Case is a clear resin case for the iPhone 16 Pro Max with an actual planted environment sealed inside the back cavity. Moss, small-leafed plants, and a stabilized soil substrate are embedded within the transparent shell, creating a thin cross-section of living terrain that you carry around with you wherever the phone goes. It’s a working phone case, a functional terrarium, and an oddly calming thing to have in your pocket all at once.

The construction involved 3D modeling and fabrication in clear resin, producing a case with enough depth in the back wall to house soil, roots, and plant matter. The plants are packed using a stabilized substrate that keeps the arrangement intact when the phone is picked up, rotated, tilted, or slipped into a bag. The camera cutout is fully preserved; the charging port at the bottom remains accessible; the phone continues to work exactly as it always did.

What keeps everything alive inside the sealed cavity is a closed-loop moisture system. The plants and soil generate humidity, which evaporates toward the inner surface of the resin, condenses back into droplets, and cycles down again. Light passing through the clear shell feeds the plants from outside, while the substrate provides gradual nutrient release. The whole thing is, in a fairly literal sense, a miniature ecosystem that sustains itself without any intervention from the person carrying it.

The condensation that forms on the inside of the shell during high-humidity moments is part of the visual appeal rather than a flaw to be engineered away. Seeing that vapor cycle through the case is a reminder that something in there is alive, actively breathing and responding to its environment, in the same pocket or bag as a device specifically engineered to minimize all biological interference.

There’s a running thread through design culture about bringing nature back into objects and spaces that have drifted too far from it. Biophilic design has become a recognizable term for everything from moss walls in offices to plant-filled shelving in apartments. Most of those applications treat plants as decoration layered on top of an existing design. Idle’s approach is different because the plant system isn’t decoration; it’s structural, sealed directly into the object’s body as a core component rather than an afterthought.

Of course, there will be some reservations about putting moisture and soil so close to your phone, which might be resistant to water and dust, but only from brief encounters. Good thing, then, that it’s still a concept project right now. But as a thought experiment about what a phone case could reasonably contain, it lands somewhere between genuinely novel and gently absurd, which is probably the most honest place for a good idea to start.

Premium smartphones have been trending bigger, heavier, and more visually imposing for years. It’s reached the point where “flagship” is almost synonymous with large, and carrying one all day feels less like convenience and more like a commitment. The compact phone hasn’t disappeared, but finding one that doesn’t sacrifice performance, battery life, or camera quality in exchange for a smaller footprint has been genuinely difficult.

That’s the gap the vivo X300 FE is aiming to fill. It pairs a 6.31-inch flat display with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset, a 6,500 mAh battery, and a ZEISS co-engineered camera system, all within a compact design that stays remarkably light for its class. On paper, it reads like a phone that shouldn’t be this compact. But does it actually work in practice? We give it a spin to find out.

Aesthetics

The X300 FE follows a flat-design language that’s become increasingly standard among more expensive flagships. There aren’t any curved glass edges or aggressively contoured surfaces, just a clean, rectangular form with ultra-narrow bezels, an aerospace-grade aluminum frame, and a front face that looks symmetrical and composed. The centered punch-hole is small and unobtrusive, and those slim borders give the display a neat, purposeful presence that doesn’t need theatrics to feel premium.

Our review unit came in white, which turns out to be a great choice for a phone this carefully considered. The matte rear panel uses vivo’s Metallic Sand AG glass treatment, giving it a soft, slightly chalky texture that resists fingerprints well and picks up ambient light in a way that shifts subtly between warm and cool tones. It doesn’t try to be eye-catching; it just looks well-made.

The flat aluminum frame wraps cleanly around the body, with edges that make it comfortable to grip without feeling sharp or slippery. The white model measures 8.10mm thick and weighs 192g, a hair more than the other colorways, but those differences don’t register in hand. What does register is the overall sense of a phone that’s been assembled with genuine attention to detail.

The camera module deserves its own mention. Rather than going for the oversized circular island that’s become visual shorthand for “serious camera phone,” vivo opted for a horizontal bar that spans the upper portion of the back. Three lenses are arranged neatly across it, with a ZEISS badge centered between them. It’s recognizable and distinctive without domineering the rest of the design. Admittedly, it’s going to be a divisive design, but it at least lets the vivo X300 FE easily stand out from the competition.

Ergonomics

At 150.83mm tall and 71.76mm wide, the X300 FE sits firmly in one-handed territory. It isn’t trying to be a miniature phone. It’s simply sized more sensibly than most flagships on the market. You can reach across the screen without adjusting your grip, slip it into a front pocket without thinking, and hold it for extended periods without the wrist fatigue bigger phones tend to bring.

The 192g weight for the white model falls in a range that feels present without being burdensome. There’s enough substance here to reinforce the premium feel of the materials, but not so much that you’re constantly aware of it. The 8.10mm profile isn’t exactly wafer-thin, though that’s a reasonable trade-off for a 6,500 mAh cell packed inside a frame this compact.

The flat-sided frame also contributes more to the ergonomic experience than it might seem. It gives your palm a stable, consistent surface to press against during typing and scrolling, which feels more controlled than on rounded-edge designs. The compact footprint, flat back, and balanced weight distribution all work together to make this a phone that feels designed around how it’s actually used.

Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 inside doesn’t need much introduction. It’s a flagship-class mobile processor, and the X300 FE puts it to good use. The 12GB RAM, expandable with another 12GB taken from the generous 512GB storage, clearly marks it as a class above your typical mid-tier compact phone. It runs Origin OS 6, based on the current Android 16 release, embracing a more minimalist and flat aesthetic that perfectly matches the phone’s design.

Day-to-day tasks feel completely effortless, from switching between apps and browser tabs to occasional gaming sessions, and nothing about the experience suggests the compact body is in any way holding the hardware back. Thermals are pretty impressive, given the vivo X300 FE’s size, but its compact form factor might work against it when it comes to how you hold it during those long periods.

Thankfully, the display backs that up well. It’s a 6.31-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with an adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz, a 1.5K resolution at 460 PPI, and a local peak brightness of 5,000 nits. The 2,160 Hz PWM dimming also makes prolonged reading and scrolling noticeably more comfortable on the eyes, a detail that matters far more than most spec sheets would have you believe.

Staring at a phone screen for hours isn’t kind to your eyes, and more people are finally taking that seriously. The backlit displays on most modern smartphones are tuned for vivid color and fast scrolling, but sustained use can lead to real fatigue. Apple’s first foldable phone, the Apple’s first foldable phone, iPhone Fold (if that’s how it will be called) is one of the most anticipated smartphones in recent memory. While Apple remains tight-lipped about anything concerning the awaited device, rumors, leaks, and concepts have flooded our memories over the years with what the iPhone Fold is and what it will be like.

2026 is suggestively the magical year when Apple is expected to launch the foldable iPhone. It has been an unperturbed timeline in almost all the reports we have seen. In the same loop – but without a timeline – a recognized Apple leaker, Majin Bu has shown “actual design of the iPhone Fold” in the latest leaked pictures.

It’s “more beautiful than the previous one,” Bu notes in his update on X, stating that he believes this is “the final design of the future iPhone Fold.” How much context there is in the claim, only time will tell, but Bu has had some correct Apple-related predictions in the past, which suggests he could have some substance to back his claim.

From the leaked pictures, one can visually notice that the camera bump on the back of the foldable device is significantly smaller than that seen in previously rumored designs. The images appear more than renders and supposedly of a prototype, showing the iPhone in a book-style foldable form factor. If the 2026 timeline is to go by – it’s Apple’s golden jubilee year as well – the iPhone Fold should ship alongside the iPhone 18 Pro slated for release in fall this year. But according to a new report from Nikkei Asia, the launch could be delayed. Nikkei reports that Apple has encountered a major setback in the engineering test phase of the foldable iPhone. There have been previously report concerning the foldable display’s crease, but this time, the report notes that the Cupertino giant is facing “more complex engineering challenges than anticipated.” If the issues persist, they could, “in a worst-case scenario,” delay the iPhone Fold launch schedule by some months. It could even mean a postponement until 2027.

Earlier this year, it was rumored that Apple had entered into the manufacturing phase of its first foldable device at Foxconn. New revelations, however, suggest Apple is “notifying” its component suppliers about the possibility of a delay in the “component production schedule for the new foldable iPhone.”

Despite the reports and unauthorized leaks, one thing is definite now. Foldable iPhone – by whatever moniker it comes – is clearly on the horizon. Apple will soon have a competitor for the Samsung Fold and other foldable smartphones on the market. I have to hand it to Honor, they are consistent. When I wrote about the Magic8 Pro Air and its striking similarity to the iPhone Air, I thought we had seen the peak of their “inspiration.” It turns out that was just the warm-up act. The main event has arrived in the form of the Honor 600 and 600 Pro, and this time they have perfectly mimicked the iPhone 17 Pro. The new renders, courtesy of WinFuture, show a design that lifts every key element from Apple’s latest flagship.
