This Modular Seating Solution Is Made From Recycled Cork Salvaged From Wine Stoppers

28 mai 2024 à 15:20

Designed by Paul Crofts, this modular seating system is called Tejo. Crofts designed the Tejo seating collection for the furniture brand Isomi. It is intended to be a “reconfigurable, recyclable, and renewable” modular seating collection that serves as a bench, a single sofa, or even a double back-to-back sofa.

Designer: Paul Crofts for Isomi

The Tejo seat includes curving components that have been filled with natural latex instead of foam. The furniture design is upholstered with natural wool, hemp, or flax instead of synthetic fabrics. It is equipped with a base made from recycled cork which has been salvaged from the production process of wine stoppers. This unique base was created instead of a traditional plywood frame.

“Grown in responsibly managed forests in the Portuguese region of Alentejo – which gives the sofa its name – cork is ideal for use in seating as it is not only soft, tactile, and visually beautiful, but it also regenerates naturally,” said Isomi.

The cork utilized for the Tejo seating solution is sustainably grown, and also a sustainable material option in itself. It ventures into the utilization of cork as a material of choice, while creating a furniture design that has a complementing and soft aesthetic value to it. The Tejo modular furniture design is available in a wide range of colors, and it has been created to work well in different commercial spaces – ranging from retail settings to workplaces and even restaurants.

The Tejo seat can be integrated with different additional elements such as screen dividers, table units, planets, power outlets, and charging ports to create a personalized and customized furniture design. You can add the components that work well for you and your lifestyle, in turn creating a seating system that meets your multiple needs – whether they’re home-oriented or for work. The elegant and refined aesthetics of the seating design allow it to artfully merge with most spaces, giving it a much-appreciated versatility.

The Urban Park Max Pushes The Boundaries Of Tiny Home Living, Offering An Apartment-Like Experience

26 mai 2024 à 23:30

Designed by TruForm Tiny, and called the Urban Park Max, this tiny home is really not very tiny. It challenges the notion of a tiny home by featuring a length of 38 feet, playfully teetering on the boundary of a tiny home and a full-sized house. The tiny home seems a bit difficult to tow, but its spaciousness does offer a living experience that is very much apartment-esque but on wheels. It is founded on a quad-axle trailer and has a sense of styling that is both contemporary and elegant – inside and out.

Designer: TruForm Tiny

The Urban Park Max features an exterior dominated by metal, with some cedar accenting. Its noticeable size makes it one of the larger North American models out there, however, it certainly isn’t one of the largest. Tri-fold glass doors lead you to the home, and they also open up to the outdoors. Generous glazing allows natural light to stream into the home, creating a lovely light-filled space. You are welcomed into an open-plan living area equipped with a L-shaped sofa. Near the sofa is a dining table, as well as a kitchen equipped with a washer/dryer, oven with a propane-powered three-burner stove, a sink, fridge/freezer, cabinetry, and some shelving.

The bathroom isn’t extravagant, but it features a vanity sink with cabinetry, a flushing toilet, and a shower. The opposite end of the home houses the master bedroom. The bedroom contains a king-sized bed and loads of storage space. Since it is located on the lower level, there is sufficient space to stand upright and move around, without banging your head to the ceiling.

The tiny home also includes a secondary bedroom intended for guests. It is located on the upper floor, and you can access it via a storage-integrated staircase. This bedroom is a conventional loft-style bedroom as seen in tiny homes, marked by a low ceiling and a double bed. There is a separate section that could work well as a home office, reading nook, or even a storage are. The Urban Park Max’s price starts at around US$187,000.

Top 10 Powerful & Sleek Automotive Concepts We Need To See On The Road ASAP

16 mai 2024 à 11:40

Here at YD, we’re always coming across super cool and powerful automotive designs, but somehow the conceptual ones seem to take the cake. And we’ve really encountered some amazing automotive designs recently Each automotive design was cutthroat and innovative, bringing in something that we don’t usually see in the market. From killer speed to dashing good looks, to impenetrable safety standards, every automotive we featured at YD broke some design barrier for us, and hopefully, they did the same for you as well. Hence, we’ve curated a collection of automotive designs that we feel were the best of the lot.  Each of these drool-worthy automobile concepts is mercilessly pushing the boundaries of the automotive industry.

1. Diode

Dubbed Diode, this visually intriguing e-bike concept is created by Tien Hung, and it features a super cool neo-minimalistic design that celebrates the future of the electric power train. The bike has an aesthetic which is almost invisible, except for one singular horizontal pillar, which runs gently from the dashboard to the taillight, accentuated by a massive battery module underneath it. The bike is also equipped with a powerful rear-wheel drivetrain and a comfy seat.

2. Polestar 8

Designed by Turin-based Salvatore Ville – this is the Polestar 8. It is an SUV concept that beautifully embraces minimalism but with an interesting twist. Vurin imparted the car with a powerful and dominating silhouette, instead of only clean surfaces. This menacing automotive looks like the Polestar 3 on steroids! It features a wider and more brutish design. It does maintain a clean design but with a more roguish personality.

3. Mercedes-Benz Dresscode

The Mercedes-Benz Dresscode is the epitome of iconic luxury and encapsulates it through the shapes of collars and rich volumes and of a formal dress. If you observe the hypercar, you’ll notice that it mimics the form of a white shirt with a tie on top, and a black jacket placed over it. The white sections serve as the shirt with the edged surfaces, while the black body that covers the car reminds you of a jacket. The doors have been created to resemble the process of taking off a suit!

4. Palladio

Dubbed Palladio, this concept for a hybrid yacht is designed to be ultra-light and can speed up to 55 knots maximum. It looks straight out of a sci-fi movie set in water and features a futuristic, mouth-shaped, avant-garde design that gives the impression that a pod is cruising through the waters. The yacht is made from carbon fiber propelled via twin Castoldi jets, and powered by two FTP engines.

5. H-Box

Dubbed the H-Box, this conceptual automotive design converts a car into a box-like machine. It is a two-seater model with chairs that are placed at the back of the cabin. However, you still need to pay attention to the manual control form in this car, unlike most self-driving automotive concepts. The driver’s seat can be moved forward to handle the steering if needed. This creates an even bigger gap between the two seats, which is great for two people who want their own space in the car.

6. Swift Pod

The Swift Pod looks like a massive motorcycle that stands on two wheels only! And this innovative automotive has such a unique shape to hold two adult-sized beds inside, one on each side of the triangle. Besides having two beds, it also houses two chairs, amenities, and the vehicle’s hardware and different bits. This is a fascinating mode of transport that lets you sleep through your commute or journey if you wish to.

7. MOQBA

Named MOQBA, this innovative conceptual design is a dynamic mix of a bike and an e-scooter. This fascinating automotive can climb stairs! It was created to be a next-gen mobility ride for users who may have difficulty with mobility. You can ride this unconventional automotive on four independent legs with wheel extensions. The MOQBA is intended to be a one-of-a-kind and exceptional mini mecha of the future.

8. BMW Motorrad CH4 Superbike

Called the BMW Motorrad CH4 Superbike – this exceptional café racer is designed by Sabino Leerentvled, and it is a ride fit for Tony Stark and his quests to take on the bad guys. The superbike has an aerodynamic geometric shape and big fat wheels which offer it a high-speed adrenaline rush. The bike truly has a massive Tony Stark influence, and it would look amazing zipping through the crowded streets in pursuit of the bad guys.

9. Apple iCar

Dubbed the Apple iCar – this conceptual automotive concept has a luxurious supercar-inspired appeal to it. It has influences of the Audi R8 and the lesser-known Lamborghini Asterion in the iCar. The automotive has an aggressive, speedy silhouette, stunning headlights and taillights, and a rounded back. It features an Apple logo on the front, and each wheel is equipped with stunning rims with the Apple logos on them.

10. Yamaev’s Scooter Concept

This tricycle scooter concept is made up of a unique rectangular side profile that gently pierces through the air, in the same manner a credit card would swipe through a payment machine. The scooter also features a wheel setup with a large front wheel which covers the scooter’s transparent cockpit. The cockpit is bubble-shaped, and it has two rear wheels which separate at lower speeds to provide stability. The wheels also combine at higher speeds for maneuverability.

This ‘Super Tiny’ Tiny Home Is All Set To Provide You With The Ultimate Off-Grid Lifestyle

14 mai 2024 à 23:30

Portugal’s Madeiguinco designed its latest tiny home offering – the Pego. In a world where tiny homes reign supreme, it is tough to create one that truly stands out, but by fostering woodworking expertise and building timber dwellings, Madeguincho managed to offer us something new and refreshing. The Pego is a compact tiny home that is designed to accompany you on your adventures into the wild with the help of a solar panel setup. The tiny home is pretty small and compact, but you shouldn’t judge the dwelling by its size, because it does pack a punch with its functionality and utility.

Designer: Madeiguinco

The Pego tiny home features a length of 16 feet, which is quite small for a European tiny home. Based on a double-axle trailer and finished in wood, the home perfectly presents the firm’s wonderful craftsmanship. The home is finished in wood both inside and outside, and the craftsmanship is reflected in the shutters on the windows, and in the doors that close up the house. The home is topped with solar panels, which keep it powered up, irrespective of where it is placed. The tiny home also has a standard RV-style hookup.

8 Fascinating LEGO Builds Based On Iconic Paintings That Art Aficionados Cannot Miss

9 mai 2024 à 11:40

It’s really quite extraordinary how there is a wonderful LEGO build for almost everything out there. Whether it’s a bowl of ramen, a scene from the show Friends, or even the Batmobile – honestly you can find LEGO’s adorable tendrils creeping almost everywhere, and we absolutely love it! So, it is a given that LEGO will eventually find itself in the prestigious and beautiful world of art. In this collection of LEGO builds, we’ve curated LEGO creations based on iconic paintings! From da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to the iconic Greate Wave of Kanagawa – we’ve curated a collection of beautiful LEGO builds inspired by tremendous works of art.

1. The Great Wave Of Kanagawa

One of the most iconic and beloved paintings in the art world is The Great Wave of Kanagawa. It is a significant and precious hallmark of Japan’s Ukioy-e art movement, and LEGO Art has recreated a LEGO version utilizing plastic blocks and a brick count of 1810 pieces. The piece includes a special brick with the artist Hokusai’s signature. The build includes multiple dot-shaped bricks which impart the painting with a pointillism effect.

2. Girl With A Pearl Earring

Made from 1619 LEGO bricks, the ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ LEGO build perfectly replicates the painting, and has some actual depth to it. Since LEGO bricks were used to build the piece, it does lack some of the finer details, but this is what makes it even more charming and unique. The girl in the build has the same blue and yellow headscarf, and a contemplative expression paired up with the pretty pearl earring which is the star feature of the painting.

3. The Scream

Edvard Munch’s The Scream painting was converted into an intriguing LEGO build! It perfectly captures the anxiety and fear Munch wanted to create in his painting, around 130 years ago. Created by LEGO builder Spacemanship, the build is made using 2999 pieces. He wanted to give people suffering from anxiety an outlet or channel for their emotions, and he really did a great job with this LEGO kit. The LEGO Ideas submission garnered a 10,000 votes milestone, and will soon be converted into a buyable LEGO kit.

4. The Portrait of a Woman in a Hat

Made by LEGO user Mecesoo, this intriguing brick-based portrait captures and recreates the essence of Picasso’s stroke by using colorful plastic bricks instead. The portrait is built using 1070 bricks without any loose bricks or collisions. The build is almost true in size to the original, hence serving as a brilliant replica. The painting is teamed up with a Minifigure of Picasso, an easel with his canvas on it, as well as two Picasso quotes with the artist’s signature.

5. LEGO Van Gogh’s Sunflowers

Van Gogh’s sunflowers become quite popular on Instagram, garnering a whole lot of attention. And LEGO master builder Chi Hsin Wei converted it into a stunning LEGO rendition. The pretty MOC includes a frame, and a fantastic three-dimensional rendition of the painting, with the flowers popping out of the canvas, and welcoming you with their simple beauty and charm.

6. The Starry Night

Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night LEGO Set

Vincent van Gogh The Starry Night LEGO Set

The Starry Night LEGO Set is based on Vincent van Gogh’s namesake painting. It is a 3D representation of the iconic oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter. The build is another product of a LEGO designer’s imagination being put into production, and being converted to reality from an idea. This final production set is up for purchase, and LEGO lovers can create their own Starry Night recreation.

7. Mona Lisa

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is brought to LEGO life with the LEGO® Art Mona Lisa (31213) painting building kit. You can recreate your own interpretation of da Vinci’s iconic painting. It features a bluer hue to reflect the colors that were used by da Vinci around 500 years ago, before paint evolved and changed with time. It serves as a beautiful wall art, or even as a lovely home decor gift for art lovers.

8. Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe Portrait

The LEGO Art 31197 Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe is for all the Andy Warhol and Marilyn Monroe fans out there! This fascinating set lets you recreate Andy Warhol’s famous pop art portrait of Marilyn Monroe. Once completed, the build features an exclusive signature tile and can be displayed as art on a wall or shelf. You are able to reproduce and recreate the iconic, mass-reproduced piece of pop art from the 1960s.

With A Kitchen That Extends Into An Outdoor Bar, The Mirasol Tiny Home Is Great For Hosting Parties

7 mai 2024 à 11:40

Tiny homes have a lot of perks to them, but one of the veritable cons is that they aren’t too great for hosting. These compact homes can make it uncomfortable and stuffy to have friends over, however, this is where Baluchon’s Mirasol home comes to the rescue. Although it features a compact size, it still lets you socialize with your friends comfortably, since it has a guest sleeping area and a kitchen that extends to form an outdoor bar. Pretty cool, right?!

Designer: Baluchon

Founded on a double-axle trailer, Mirasol features a length of 20 feet and it is clad in red cedar with an aluminum accenting. The interior of the home is finished in ash and spruce, and it is powered by a standard RV-style hookup. The home also has a terrace along its exterior which was set up after the pictures were taken. This terrace teams up with the drop-down bar outside to extend the living space quite a bit, letting the owner host some cool parties! The kitchen also has operable windows allowing the host to pass food and drinks with ease. The exterior also includes a small detachable pantry on one wall, allowing food and drinks to be cooled outside.

The interior of the house has plenty of glazing, creating an airy and spacious home with a light-filled ambiance. The living room includes a large L-shaped sofa bed which serves as a guest sleeping area. There is some storage space as well. The kitchen contains a breakfast bar with stool seating for two, as well as a sink, oven, small fridge, two-burner propane-powered stove, cabinetry, and some shelving. This space is connected to a compact bathroom with a toilet and shower.

However, the Mirasol tiny home only has one bedroom which can be accessed via a removable ladder. The bedroom is like most bedrooms seen in tiny homes. It has a typical loft-style interior amped with a low ceiling and a double bed. The exact pricing of the Mirasol tiny home is unknown, but usually Baluchon’s models start at $91,000 USD.

3D-Printed House Is Built in 18 Hours, Offering An Economical Housing Solution For The Future

2 mai 2024 à 17:20

3D-printed architecture has been making waves ever since its inception. It is a fantastic solution to pricey housing, providing economical housing options to the population. Portagul-based Havelar is creating its very own inaugural 3D-printed home, which takes only 18 hours to print! The home is located in the Greater Porto area of Portugal’s second-largest city. It is designed to be an 80 sq ft two-bedroom residence which currently doesn’t have a name bestowed upon it. The home is printed using COBOD’s BOD2 printer.

Designer: Havelar

The home can be constructed for €1,500 per sq m, which is a great deal in comparison to the Porto average of €3,104 (almost US$3,330) per square meter. This economical price tag is because of the speed of construction provided by the 3D printer. The printer follows a blueprint and forms a cement-like mixture from a nozzle in layers. This forms the basic structure of the house. The printing process takes almost 18 hours, and then builders finish the construction by installing the door, paneling, windows, and roof. They also manually install any other amenities that are needed. Taking the human labour into consideration, the home was completed within two months.

The home by Havelar is a single-storey abode with telltale ribbed walls which implies that the home was built using a 3D printer. The interior includes a central kitchen and dining room, with two bedrooms, a living room, as well as a bathroom. The home is quite basic and minimal compared to high-end and luxurious 3D-printed homes you may have seen around, but taking the price tag into consideration it truly is a fair deal for what you’re getting.

“We want to team up with partners who see themselves in building sustainable and accessible communities,” said Rodrigo Vilas-Boas, Co-Founder of Havelar. “With €150,000 [$161,000], it’s possible for a young couple to have the home they’ve always dreamed of, in an area with good access and services.”

This home is the first 3D-printed home developed by Havelar, but the firm plans to amp up production and even reach carbon neutrality by 2030, by shifting to alternative construction materials like straw and earth.

Meet USP – A Sponge Furniture Collection You Can Grown And Expand In Your Own Home

26 avril 2024 à 17:20

At Milan Design Week, we got to witness a range of intriguing flat-pack furniture by researchers from the Swiss design school ÉCAL. The interesting collection needs to be immersed in water to reach its final finished form. Dubbed Under Pressure Solutions or UPS, the furniture is crafted from thin and compressed sheets of cellulose sponge, which enables the products to be packed into flat parcels. In fact, some of the objects are compact enough to be pushed through a letterbox, facilitating more efficient shipping.

Designer: ÉCAL

Once you receive the products you need to soak them in the bath or shower, which allows them to blow up to around 10 times their original size in a few seconds. You then wrung out the sponge, and leave it to dry, hardening it, and forming a sturdy, durable, and self-supporting form of furniture that can support the weight of a person. The furniture collection is way better than conventional plastic foam when it comes to durability.

“Cellulose is a part of nature so, like a tree, it can be flexible and strong at the same time,” said ÉCAL researcher and industrial designer Christophe Guberan. The sponge is extracted from wood offcuts, and it is equipped with strength due to the same cellulose fibers that is utilized by a tree to reinforce its trunk and branches.

To create the sponge, the cellulose was derived from woodcuts. The cellulose was then chemically dissolved and regenerated to create sheets utilizing the same process that produces viscose and other cellulose textiles. Glauber’s salt is then added into those concoction, providing the sponge with its pores, and strengthening the cellulose’s ability to absorb water. This material is sold as standardized sheets that are then compressed and dehydrated to support smooth and easy transportation.

By adding small amounts of water, the various furniture pieces can become flexible once again, and they can be repaired by smoothing out any dents. And once the lifecycle of the furniture has been completed, it can be recycled or composted in the backyard.

Nendo Installs A Carbon-Capturing Wall In A Contemporary Japanese Home

26 avril 2024 à 13:20

Most of our modern infrastructure and architecture is bad on concrete, and the production of cement used in concrete is one of the biggest causes of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. This constitutes a serious issue that must be addressed, especially with the current state of our Planet Earth. In this effort, Nendo displays a specimen of a greener and cleaner way to construct and build with its Block-Wall House. The Block-Wall House is partially built using a new concrete that captures carbon dioxide instead of emitting it!

Designer: Nendo & Kajima Corporation

Tucked away in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture, the Block-Wall House is located next to a rural road. The house features a lot of glazing, to offer privacy against pedestrians and passing vehicles. The home is equipped with an angled screen which lets residents look out but makes it quite difficult for a passerby to glance inside. This screen is made using 2000 blocks which have been arranged in parallel rows to form five walls, with a length of 360 feet. This screen is made from the aforementioned sustainable and novel concrete!

This newly developed concrete is made by the Kajima Corporation in collaboration with the Chugoku Electric Power Co, Denka, and Landes Co. The concrete is named CO2-SUICOM, and for its production, a special cement mixture is placed in a curing chamber, and carbon dioxide is pumped into the chamber for absorption. This absorbed CO2 gets stuck inside the concrete and is not released. It is as strong as regular concrete!

“Generally, concrete hardens through a chemical reaction between cement and water,” explains Kajima Corporation. “But with CO2-SUICOM, over half the cement is replaced with a material we call γ-C2S. Instead of reacting with water, γ-C2S reacts with the CO2 in the air to harden. After mixing the materials needed to create CO2-SUICOM, the concrete can be placed in a location with high CO2 levels so it can capture the CO2 and harden, trapping the gas inside. For example, a thermal power plant or other facility that produces carbon-heavy exhaust gases can redirect the gases into a carbon sequestration chamber, where concrete products made with CO2-SUICOM can be placed to capture the CO2 in the gases.”

Currently, the price of producing CO2-SIUCOM concrete is about three times higher than usual concrete in Japan. Hence, work is being done to bring down the price, and Kajima Corporation believes that the concrete will become more economical in the future.
