This Georgian Residential Complex Rejects Straight Lines on its Floor Plan, Mimicking The Ocean

Straight lines are easy. Any architect can slap a rectangular tower on a plot and call it a day, and most beachfront developers do exactly that because straight lines are cheap, fast to build, and easy to sell off a brochure. Georgia’s Adjara coast just got a project that looked at that playbook and said absolutely not. Montemar Residential, a three tower complex rising in the seaside town of Gonio, ditches the grid entirely in favor of forms that ripple, curve, and cantilever like something dragged up from the Black Sea itself. It is the kind of building that makes you stop scrolling, then immediately want to know who signed off on it and how.

Designed by Irakli Emiridze and Irina Chkonia of Alpha Architecture, the complex sits on a 10,000 square meter plot within a UNESCO listed stretch of coastline, right where Adjara’s oddly tropical microclimate runs into the Black Sea. Each of the three 16 story towers tops out around 48 to 52 meters and wears a dramatic aluminum crown that flares out over the roofline like a mushroom cap, or if you squint, a seashell caught mid opening. Parking for 300 vehicles sits tucked below grade, keeping the ground plane free for landscaping and plazas. It is a lot of building, and it wants you to know it.

The seashell inspiration shows up in how the facade behaves. The balcony edges do not stack in the usual identical, floor by floor grid you see on every coastal high rise from Miami to Marbella. Instead they undulate, staggering in and out like sediment ridges carved by tidal movement, which gives each tower a texture closer to a geological formation than a construction product. Aluminum embossed sheet cladding wraps the crowning terraces, catching light in a way that concrete or glass simply cannot, and it is the detail that separates Montemar from the generic curved tower trend that has been creeping through Gulf and Black Sea resort markets alike.

The space between the three towers is treated as public terrain rather than leftover setback, with green plantings, plazas, and communal zones designed to pull residents out of their units and into shared space. Panoramic apartments come with private terraces and jacuzzis angled toward the water, the kind of amenity that used to be penthouse exclusive and is now standard issue on any coastal development trying to compete for buyers. Whether that democratization of the infinity view holds up once the cranes clear out is the real test, since renderings are notoriously generous with light, weather, and empty beaches.

Gonio is a strange place for this kind of architectural swing. It is a historic town, not a resort capital, and Montemar is betting that sculptural ambition can coexist with a UNESCO designation next door rather than clash with it. If the finished towers deliver even half of what the renders promise, this stretch of the Adjara coast is about to become a lot more interesting to watch than its neighbors on the Black Sea.

Mattel’s 1:1 brick-built Xbox is a 3,509-piece tribute to gaming’s early 2000s era

The original Xbox is turning 25, and Mattel is marking the occasion with a collector’s piece that transforms Microsoft’s first gaming console into a 1:1-scale building set. Created under the premium Mattel Brick Shop, the Microsoft Xbox Building Toy Kit recreates the chunky 2001 console from 3,509 pieces, complete with its oversized Duke controller and a surprisingly elaborate interior.

At first glance, the model is designed to look remarkably close to the original hardware. The familiar black rectangular body, recessed side grilles, front controller ports, X-shaped top panel, and central green Xbox logo are all recreated in brick form. The accompanying Duke controller is also buildable and connects to the console, with working buttons, a D-pad, and movable analog sticks. It is a display model rather than a functional gaming machine, but the physical interaction is part of what makes the set more than a static replica.

The set also follows a growing interest in turning gaming hardware into physical building objects. A few years ago, we covered a LEGO Xbox Series S concept that treated the console itself as a customizable canvas for brick-built artwork. Mattel’s new creation takes a detour from the conventional brick-building approach, though, as it employs bricks to personalize a console, using thousands of them to recreate an entire piece of gaming history.

The more interesting details are hidden inside the console. Opening the model reveals three removable dioramas inspired by some of the original Xbox’s most recognizable games: Halo: Combat Evolved, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and Psychonauts. Each scene comes with small NanoWorld figures representing characters from the games, with 12 figures included across the set. The dioramas can also be removed and displayed independently, giving the enormous console a modular quality rather than making its interior purely decorative.

Mattel has also given the model a modest interactive layer. Pressing buttons on the connected Duke controller activates four different light-and-sound sequences, including the original Xbox opening sequence and effects associated with the three game-inspired scenes. A concealed button combination triggers an additional lighting sequence, adding a small Easter egg for builders who spend time exploring the finished model.

The choice of games is particularly evocative. Halo helped define Xbox as a gaming platform, while Morrowind and Psychonauts represent different sides of the console’s early library. Rather than simply reproducing the hardware, Mattel has effectively turned the console into a compact museum of its formative years, with the games physically embedded into the machine they helped make memorable.

For anyone who remembers the original Xbox as a piece of hardware rather than simply a platform, that distinction is significant. The finished model is essentially a life-size nostalgia object, one that preserves the proportions and visual language of Microsoft’s first console while hiding miniature worlds from its games inside.

The set is intended for builders aged 17 and above and is positioned firmly as a premium collector display rather than a conventional toy. It is currently available for preorder through select retailers, with a US price of $324.

CUKTECH’s 300W Desktop Charger Wants to Replace Your Entire Drawer of Power Bricks

If you have ever charged a Xiaomi phone with the bundled brick, there is a decent chance CUKTECH’s engineers had a hand in it, even though the name never made it onto the packaging. The company started in 2016 as a straight up OEM, building chargers behind the scenes for Xiaomi and other big players, before merging with ZMI in 2022 and finally launching products under its own name. It is the classic story of a supplier deciding it was tired of being invisible.

That decision has paid off. The CUKTECH 30 Charging Station Ultra just picked up two wins at the European Product Design Award, one for computer accessories and one for office appliances, thanks to a 300W GaN powered design from Chong Wang and Ziyao Wang. We have followed the brand’s climb as its power banks and chargers kept getting screens, better materials, and sharper industrial design with every release. This latest charging station, with its five ports and a live readout of exactly what your gear is pulling, is the moment the sleeper brand stops sleeping.

Three USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and a dedicated DC output share the front face, and together they can push out up to 300W total. The two primary USB-C ports handle up to 140W each under PD 3.1, which covers most modern laptops without breaking a sweat, but the real number only shows up when you route power through the DC port. That single line is built to talk directly to compatible laptops and can hit the full 300W ceiling on its own, essentially replacing the oversized proprietary brick that usually ships in the box. Third generation GaN sits at the core of the whole system, paired with what CUKTECH calls a PFC plus LLC dual architecture, a combination chosen specifically to keep five simultaneous charging sessions stable without the unit turning into a space heater. Gallium nitride has become the default material for anyone chasing high wattage in a small footprint, since it switches more efficiently than older silicon designs and sheds heat faster under sustained load. Thirteen fast charging protocols are baked in, including PD 3.1, PPS, Xiaomi’s own 120W standard, UFCS, Huawei SCP, and both QC and AFC, which is a genuinely broad net for a single charger to cast. Nine layers of protection cover temperature, over-voltage, and over-current scenarios, which matters more than usual given how much power is moving through a chassis this size.

The form itself leans minimal, angled slightly on a magnetic tilting base so the screen stays readable without craning your neck, and finished in a two tone silver and black that reads more like studio monitor than power strip. A right angle DC cable keeps the desk tidier than the usual straight jack, and the grounded three pin AC cable is a small nod to safety that a lot of competitors skip to save a few cents.

None of this would matter much if the pricing did not make sense, and at $159.99 it lands right where a serious desk upgrade should, undercutting rivals capped at 140W or 200W while offering meaningfully more headroom. CUKTECH spent a decade building other companies’ chargers before it ever put its own name on a box. Two design award wins later, it is clear that decade taught them exactly which details actually matter.

Apple is Building a Short, Wide iPhone Ultra… Now It Owes Us an Actual iPhone Mini

I have a friend who still uses an iPhone 13 mini held together by a case and pure spite, and every single time a new iPhone launches, she asks me the same question. Is it small yet. It never is. Apple has spent years telling us, implicitly, that small phones do not sell, that the market has spoken, that everyone wants a bigger canvas for videos and games and doomscrolling. Fine, sure, the sales numbers backed that up in 2023. But sales numbers do not mean the desire disappeared, they mean the alternative was not good enough to fight for.

Which brings me to the iPhone Ultra, Apple’s rumored first foldable, expected to close into a short, squat, almost passport-shaped little brick before you unfold it into something the size of an iPad mini. That folded shape is the closest thing to mini energy Apple has shown in years, and it is buried inside a two thousand dollar folding phone nobody asked to be the delivery method. My friend does not want an iPad mini that folds. She wants her 13 mini, but new. Apple already built the shape. It just built it around the wrong phone.

The Air existed to answer a question almost nobody was asking at checkout, namely how thin can a phone get before the internals start filing complaints. It was a genuine engineering flex, the kind of thing that looks incredible in a teardown video and slightly pointless in daily use. I understood what it was trying to prove. I just never needed it proven to me personally, and I doubt I was alone in that.

The Ultra is rumored to repeat that exact flex, except this time the thinness gets folded in half, closing down to somewhere between 9 and 9.5mm shut and reportedly as thin as 4.5mm open, according to recent leaks. That is a genuinely wild number for a phone with a hinge in it. Apple is once again proving it can do the hard, borderline unnecessary engineering thing. The difference is that this time, buried inside that flex, is an actual shape people have been begging for since 2023. Apple just does not seem to have noticed it yet.

Go back and look at what the 13 mini actually was for a second, because I think people forget how unremarkable the compromise really was. It measured 131.5mm tall, 64.2mm wide, weighed 141 grams, and ran the exact same A15 chip as the standard 13. You gave up battery life and screen real estate. You did not give up the flagship experience shrunk down to fit an actual hand. Compare that to where the standard iPhone lineup sits today, regularly north of 6.1 inches before you even get to Pro Max territory, and the gap the mini used to fill has only gotten wider and lonelier.

Now put the Ultra’s folded footprint next to that. Reports point to a 5.5 inch cover display when shut, in a short, wide, passport style shell that is about as close to mini adjacent proportions as Apple has shipped since the mini died. The catch is that this compact shell only exists as a doorway into a 7.8 inch, 4:3 inner screen and a starting price rumored to land somewhere between 1,999 and 2,499 dollars. Nobody buying that phone is buying it to have something small in their pocket. They are buying an iPad mini that happens to fold shut, which is a completely different pitch than the one my friend has been asking me about for three years running.

There has been some loose speculation, mostly a 9to5Mac piece from last year, that Apple’s new staggered launch schedule could theoretically clear a runway for a smaller phone somewhere down the line. Even that piece called the odds slim to none, and nothing currently on Apple’s roadmap for the 18, 18e, 18 Pro, or Ultra includes a mini in any form. Samsung, for what it is worth, has stuck with its Z Flip clamshell as its own answer to compact, so the appetite for small has not vanished industry wide, it has just gone unanswered on Apple’s side of the fence for a while now.

So here is the pitch, and it is not a complicated one. Apple has now proven twice, once with the Air and once with the Ultra’s folded shell, that it can engineer real compactness without breaking anything important. Skip the fold. Skip the tablet trapped inside a phone shaped envelope. Take that exact short, wide, passport sized footprint and wrap a single, non folding screen around it, call it a mini, and ship it. Apple does not need a new idea here. It already built one. It just keeps hiding it inside features nobody was asking it to attach to.

Lando Norris’ New LEGO Helmet Is Weirdly Emotional to Build

McLaren just hit 1,000 Grands Prix, which in Formula 1 years is basically ancient royalty status. Only Ferrari has been around longer in this sport, and Ferrari acts like it too. So when a team crosses a milestone like that, you throw a party, you paint a special livery on the car, and apparently, you also get LEGO to build you a commemorative brick helmet with your driver’s face on the box.

That is exactly what happened with Lando Norris’s set, a 793 piece build that packs his signature yellow and black “blob” design (his words, not mine) onto one side of a papaya orange helmet shell. It is McLaren history and Norris’s personal branding smashed together into a display piece, and somehow LEGO made that combination look genuinely good instead of like a marketing fever dream.

What makes this one different from your average licensed tie in set is that Norris was actually in the room for it. This was not LEGO grabbing some reference photos and calling it a day. The drivers worked directly with LEGO’s design team to shape both the Norris helmet and its companion piece for teammate Oscar Piastri, and the real helmets both drivers wore trackside at Monaco were based on the LEGO designs, not the other way around. That is a genuinely rare flex for a toy company. Daniel Meehan, LEGO’s Creative Lead for F1, put it well when he said building organic helmet curves at this scale “presents exciting opportunities for exploring new building techniques and creative parts usage,” which is design speak for “yeah, this was hard and we are proud we pulled it off.”

And they did pull it off. The papaya orange half and the neon yellow squiggle half meet along a seam that somehow still reads as one continuous helmet, not two mismatched shells taped together. Printed tiles handle every sponsor logo along the brow, McLaren, Mastercard, Dropbox, OKX, all sitting exactly where they would on the real thing. The back of the helmet is where the emotional weight lives though. LEGO printed “1.000 GP” and “1963” across the rear in bold anniversary numerals, with a small nod to “Bruce / Mal Est. 1963,” a reference to Bruce McLaren founding the team over sixty years ago. “NEVER STOP RACING” runs along the base of the visor. It is a lot of history packed into a helmet the size of a grapefruit.

My favorite detail, though, is buried in the yellow side paneling where LEGO snuck in a tiny printed minifig head, smiling face and all, hidden right inside Norris’s own design pattern. It is such a small thing, but it is basically LEGO signing its own work, and it tells you the people building this actually cared about more than just slapping a logo on a shelf piece.

The set comes mounted on a black display stand with Norris’s number 1 and a printed signature plaque, plus a minifigure of Norris himself in off track team gear, reportedly the first time he has been rendered as a LEGO minifig. It also plugs into the LEGO Builder app so you can rotate and zoom your progress mid build, which is a nice touch if you like tracking your pit stops digitally.

This helmet drops right after LEGO built ten full size, actually driveable F1 cars for a stunt at last year’s Miami Grand Prix, so the brand’s relationship with the sport is clearly only ramping up. An Industrial Designer Hid the Chair’s Entire Folding Mechanism Inside the Backrest

Gudmundur Ludvik had a question he couldn’t let go of. Why should a folding chair be a compromise? The answer, for decades, had been accepted without much pushback: folding chairs sacrifice comfort for storage, aesthetics for portability. The category had been quietly settled. Ludvik disagreed.

The Backflip, produced by HAY, is his rebuttal. An Icelandic designer based in Vejle, Denmark, Ludvik trained first as a carpenter and cabinetmaker before studying sculpture at the Icelandic Academy of Arts and furniture design at the Danish Design School, graduating in 2002. That layered background — craft, art, design — shows in the Backflip. The chair doesn’t announce its ingenuity. It keeps it entirely to itself.

The defining feature is a folding mechanism concealed within the backrest. A single rotation collapses the chair in one continuous motion; one hand is all it takes. There are no exposed hinges, no visible hardware, no visual record of the engineering beneath. The mechanism is part of the structure rather than an addition to it, and that distinction is everything. From the front, the Backflip looks like a chair that simply sits well. Which is the point.

Ludvik’s stated ambition was to approach the folding chair typology from the opposite direction: create a good chair first, and a folding chair second. The frame is solid beech wood, lacquered, with a moulded plywood backrest. The profile is clean and unhurried, shaped by the logic of material and construction rather than any impulse toward decoration. Available in natural beech across a range of coloured finishes, it translates across private dining rooms and public hospitality interiors without trying too hard in either direction.

HAY also offers a matching wall bracket, designed to hold one or two folded Backflip chairs flush against any wall. It’s a satisfying extension of the concept: a chair that folds becomes genuinely space-saving only when storage itself is resolved. The bracket completes that thought without making a fuss about it.

The Backflip was previewed at 3 Days of Design in Copenhagen in 2026, where it sat alongside work from Jasper Morrison and Philippe Malouin in HAY’s exhibition at O-Overgaden, a contemporary art institution in Christianshavn. In that company, it held its own, which is a fair measure of how resolved the design feels.

What Ludvik has made is not a clever folding chair. It’s a chair that happens to fold, and the difference is considerable. That the mechanism disappears entirely into the backrest is less a magic trick than a design argument, made quietly, about where the priorities should lie.

This Desk Lamp Puts a Spotlight in a Ring Light With One Knob

Desk lighting has long been a compromise between task and atmosphere. Professional lamps tend to lean one way or the other: too directional and harsh for extended use, or too diffuse to support fine detail work. A lamp that’s good for examining physical samples often isn’t comfortable over long stretches, and one that’s gentle on the eyes doesn’t always deliver when you need a hard, directed beam.

The Focus Light is a desktop lamp concept built around a different premise. Rather than committing to one kind of output, it combines two independent light sources into a single lamp head, giving the user the ability to shift between a precise, concentrated beam and a broad ambient glow, or run both at once. All of it’s controlled by a single rotary knob, and there aren’t any menus, apps, or extra switches involved.

The lamp head is organized concentrically: an outer ring delivers ambient light while a central optical lens handles the focused beam. That layout has both functional and visual logic to it. Both sources sit in deliberate, concentric relation to each other, and the overall form looks as precise as it performs. The whole thing is finished in space gray metal, which lends it a professional, precision-tool character.

Control comes from a rotary knob on top, marked with a red indicator line. Rotating it 15 degrees activates focusing mode, sending a tight, concentrated beam straight down. At 30 degrees, the lamp shifts into diffusing mode, spreading the output into something closer to fill light. Push it to 60 degrees, and both sources run simultaneously, combining the central spot with the ambient ring for a layered workspace light.

For detailed hands-on tasks, being able to shift between modes without touching an app or dimmer panel makes a real difference. An illustrator tracing fine lines benefits from the precision of the focused beam, but that same beam creates harsh contrast against a dark surrounding surface. Bringing in the ambient ring softens that contrast, and having both running at once makes moving between close-up precision work and wider desk visibility much more seamless.

The same flexibility serves anyone who switches between different types of work at the same desk. Reading calls for something even and non-glare; marking up documents or working with small physical components benefits from a harder, more directed light. The Focus Light doesn’t ask the user to swap lamps or reposition the arm for each shift. The knob handles it, and the change is immediate.

The physical form reflects the precision the lamp is meant to support. The lamp head is a clean disc with radiating heat fins arranged around the inner lens assembly, and the arm connects at a ball joint that allows repositioning without loosening a series of screws. A threaded desk clamp handles the mounting, so it doesn’t demand a grommet hole or take up surface area with a weighted base.

What stands out about the concept isn’t just the dual-source setup, but that a single physical control manages both. There’s no menu to scroll, no app to open. The red indicator on the knob tells you exactly where you are, and the three positions are distinct enough that you’d find your way back to any of them by feel after just a few days.

The Georgia Art Show Turning 9 Broken 3D Prints Into Music

Every fabrication lab in the country is quietly accumulating a problem. Failed prints, test runs, leftover filament, the ghost of every prototype that didn’t make the cut. Most of it ends up in the bin. Architect Hyojin Kwon noticed this and, instead of moving on, asked a different question: what if all that discarded plastic could hold a note?

The result is Ninefold: A Distributed Resonant Field, a collaboration between Kwon’s design studio Pre- and Post-, percussionist and composer Jeremy Muller, and architect and material researcher Misri Patel. It’s currently on view at the Reeves House Visual Arts Center in Woodstock, Georgia, through September, and it is one of the more quietly radical things happening in design right now.

The installation is made up of nine large-scale forms, each one 3D-printed from discarded PLA collected from campus makerspaces and fabrication labs. The team shredded that waste into pellets, blended it with virgin material, and ran it through a pellet-based additive manufacturing process. The resulting objects are not identical. Some grow into tall, slender columns. Others widen into chambers or narrow toward their centers. Each carries its own texture, its own layered color variation from the mixed-batch sourcing, and its own distinct harmonic frequency. Together, they form a distributed sound field, meaning the sound is never coming from one place. It moves with you.

That last part is what makes this more than a sculpture show with a good concept. As you walk through the space, your position changes the acoustic picture entirely. Tones overlap, separate, recede. You’re not passively observing nine objects; you’re completing the field. The project draws on the thinking of composer Edgard Varèse, who called for “organized sound” as architecture, and on the spatial music systems of Iannis Xenakis and Le Corbusier. Those are not small reference points. They’re pointing at a lineage that treats space itself as a musical instrument, and Kwon, Muller, and Patel are building within that tradition using material that would have otherwise ended up as landfill.

The aspect of Ninefold that deserves real attention is how seriously it takes the material. The layered plastic isn’t hidden or smoothed over into something that looks deliberately “designed.” The texture is part of the expression. You can see the deposition, the color shifts, the history of what it was made from. The project doesn’t pretend the recycling didn’t happen; it foregrounds it. That honesty feels important at a moment when sustainability has become more of a marketing category than an actual practice.

The nine forms were also fabricated in modular sections, which means they can be transported, reconfigured, and reinstalled elsewhere. That might seem like a logistical footnote, but it matters: an installation about material longevity should probably have a long life. These objects weren’t made to be shown once and archived.

Ninefold is part of a dual exhibition that also includes Plastic Reimagined: Material Agency & Circular Design, developed with students from Georgia Tech’s graduate architecture program and curated by Carolina Cuevas. The full show runs through September at the Reeves House, and admission is free. If you’re near Woodstock, Georgia, it’s worth the trip. If you’re not, the images alone carry something worth sitting with. A lot of projects right now wear sustainability as a label. Ninefold actually earns it, and then manages to also be beautiful, which is rarer than it should be.

Ripstop materials and engineered fasteners hold the system together under real conditions, a claim validated by the YKK Special Prize at the 25th YKK Fastening Award. For anyone spending time in unpredictable terrain, Shelter Wear removes the gap between what you’re wearing and what you need.

And then there’s HiLight, the one piece of new hardware Google actually wants you to talk about. A small LED cluster tucked into the corner of that same camera bar, ready to glow when Gemini is thinking or when someone you love is calling.

It is, in essence, Google finally admitting it missed the old Nexus notification LED and bringing it back. Five colors, a glow for Gemini, a glow for your favorite caller, and that’s the whole feature list on day one. Nothing to complain about here, except that Nothing exists. The London phone brand has spent years turning its own version of this idea into an actual playground, mini-games, custom widgets, an SDK anyone can build on. Google clearly has the engineering muscle to do something just as ambitious with HiLight down the line. It just chose not to, at least not yet.

Before we get into that though, credit where it’s due. Hold a Pixel 11 next to a Pixel 10 and the difference is immediate, not the kind that only shows up in marketing photos. The bar sits almost flush now, and Google’s claim that it’s basically bumpless with a case on actually checks out in person. Under that glass, Tensor G6 lands on a 2nm node, Google’s first, promising 25 percent faster browsing, 15 percent quicker app launches, and on-device AI running up to 3.5 times faster while using less power. The Pixel 11 gets a new 48MP main sensor with 56 percent more light sensitivity and a telephoto stretching to 30x Super Zoom. This is a very complete phone before you even get to the Pro models.

The Pro and Pro XL push further with a 50MP main sensor, a redesigned 48MP telephoto, Portrait Mode at 5x, and 120x Pro Zoom, sitting under a 3,600-nit display that Google claims is twice as scratch resistant as last year’s. Titan M3 adds quantum-safe boot security on top. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold deserves its own mention here too. It shed almost 10 percent of its weight and a millimeter of thickness, down to 10.1mm closed, while Google claims triple the durability thanks to a redesigned gearless hinge. The crease is genuinely harder to spot than last year’s, and the whole thing folds flat enough to stop feeling like a novelty. If you told me a year ago Google would have the most convincing foldable in its own lineup, I would not have believed you.

Now, the part everyone will bring up regardless of how the rest of this goes: RAM. The Pro and Pro XL start at 12GB in their base 256GB configs, down from 16GB last year, and Google is blaming this on a supplier RAM shortage hitting the entire industry. Memory manufacturers have been shifting production capacity toward AI server chips, and consumer RAM and NAND prices have spiked hard enough this year that people are half-jokingly calling it RAMageddon. It is a real problem, and Google is far from the only phone maker feeling it. Storage doubling to 256GB as a base softens the blow a little, but a $100 price bump alongside a RAM cut is still a hard sell. Fair enough on the supply chain excuse. Less fair asking Pro buyers to pay more for less unless they climb a storage tier.

Back to HiLight, because it deserves the real estate. That LED cluster sits right where the temperature sensor used to live on older Pixels, which is a strange trade to make for something this limited. Google’s official pitch is that HiLight keeps you informed without the distraction of staring at a screen, which is a very polished way of saying there weren’t enough ideas to fill the space. Glowing when Gemini talks and flashing a color for favorite callers is a fine start, not an entire feature. Compare that to what’s happening across the pond. Nothing’s Glyph Matrix on the Phone (3) packs 489 individually lit LEDs into what functions as a tiny secondary screen, complete with an open SDK that lets anyone build their own widgets and games. People made a working ball maze. A tilt-controlled Magic 8 Ball. A contact dialer you can use without touching the main display. None of it is essential, but all of it is fun, and fun counts for something when you’re asking someone to pay a premium for a light.

Google clearly has the horsepower for something bigger here. Tensor G6 alone proves the company isn’t short on engineering muscle, and the camera bar redesign shows the industrial design team knows exactly what it’s doing right now. HiLight feels like the output of a team that had a great idea, then stopped one meeting short of making it good. I want to see where this goes in a year or two, because the foundation Google just built, the hardware, the placement, even the name, is genuinely solid. It just needs an actual reason to exist beyond telling you Gemini is thinking.

Google’s Pixel Tag is making the same ‘boring’ design mistake that Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi made

The Pixel Tag comes in exactly one color, a grey green called Fog, wrapped around stainless steel with a G logo stamped right on the front. It’s the same script Apple wrote with the AirTag and Samsung copied with the SmartTag2. A tracker spends its entire life clipped to your keys or your dog’s collar or tucked into a backpack pocket, which makes it one of the most personal objects you own. Google, of all companies, knows how to make hardware feel less like hardware. It just didn’t bother here.

Somebody at DJI figured out that a $60 microphone could come with snap-on decals, because apparently even a tiny accessory deserves a little personality. Motorola figured out something similar with the Moto Tag, which actually ships in sage green and a soft blue instead of the usual black or white default. So it’s not like nobody in tech has thought about this. It’s just that almost nobody applies it to trackers, and now Google has joined the long list of companies that had the chance and passed.

The excuse I keep hearing, and I use that word deliberately, is durability. Metal survives drops, fabric doesn’t, case closed. Except my phone survives daily abuse inside a woven case, and so does yours, and so does every rugged Kevlar sleeve sold by the millions for devices far more fragile than a coin sized tracker. Nobody worries their phone case is going to disintegrate because it has some texture on it. A tracker being too delicate for color or grip is not a real constraint. It’s a decision that got dressed up as one.

Underneath that decision is genuinely solid engineering, for what it’s worth. The Pixel Tag measures 1.8 by 1.1 inches and just 5.4mm thick, which makes it noticeably slimmer than the AirTag’s 8mm body. It runs on a replaceable CR2032 battery rated for about a year, carries an IP67 rating for dust and water, and pairs instantly over Fast Pair with any Android 9 device or newer. The headline feature is Ultra Wideband combined with Bluetooth Channel Sounding, which gives you a literal on-screen arrow and distance reading instead of a vague “getting warmer” signal, though that trick needs Android 16 and Bluetooth 6.0 to actually work. It taps into Find Hub, Google’s network of over a billion Android phones, so a lost item can get spotted even when it is nowhere near your own devices. You can share access with up to ten people, ring it from a Pixel Watch, or ask Gemini through your Pixel Buds to ring it for you. All of that ships November 11 for $29, or $99 for a four pack.

Google already knows how to wrap good engineering in an object people actually want to look at, because it solved the exact same brief years ago with its speakers. The Nest Mini gets a soft, woven top because Google understood people don’t want to display a hunk of bare plastic on their kitchen counter. The Nest Audio does the same thing, fabric front, rounded edges, an object designed to belong in a room rather than announce itself as a gadget in one. That instinct exists inside the same company that just shipped a keychain accessory in one shade of grey with a logo dead center, like it needed to remind you it’s tech.

A tracker’s entire job is to sit quietly on the stuff you actually care about. It should feel like something you chose, not something you tolerated because the tech underneath happened to be good. Find Hub integration, UWB precision finding, a battery that lasts a year, all of that is genuinely solid work. But solid engineering wrapped in a logo stamped on steel isn’t a finished product. It’s half of one, and Google, weirdly, is the company with the least excuse for stopping there.

This Cork Cactus Looks Like Decor and Acts Like 3 Pieces of Furniture

Coat stands have always occupied an awkward position in a room. They’re functional enough to keep around but rarely considered anything beyond a place to pile things on the way out the door. Pin boards face a similar problem, useful at a desk but hard to integrate into a living space without making it feel like an office. Objects that try to do both tend to resolve that tension poorly.

Corctus starts from a different premise. The name merges “cork” and “cactus,” which is also a fair summary of the concept: a floor-standing object shaped like a saguaro cactus, made entirely from cork, and quietly capable of handling most of what people need to keep close at hand. Rather than solving the storage problem with hooks and brackets, it solves it by making the form itself the function.

Designer: Liam de la Bedoyere (boredeye)

Cork is the central material here, both practically and conceptually. The surface is textured enough to grip a pair of sunglasses on the rounded top without anything extra, and receptive to pins without reinforcement or a backing board. A sketch, a sticky note, or a reference card pins straight into the body of the object wherever it’s needed, with no designated zone for it.

The cactus arms extend outward with a slight upward curve that happens to work exactly like a hook. A backpack hangs from one, a tote bag from another, a scarf draped over without sliding off. Headphones sit naturally over an arm when not in use. None of this requires any hardware, any dedicated accessories, or any particular intention. The geometry of the form handles all of it.

The disc-shaped base adds one more surface. Magazines stack on it, a few books sit within reach, and it grounds the form without demanding much floor space. The compact proportions keep the whole object from reading as a coat stand, which is deliberate. The intention was always a sculptural companion rather than a piece of utilitarian furniture, and the scale reflects that.

That distinction matters in practice. Next to a desk, the Corctus functions as an immediate, physical task board without a screen. Move it into a living room or hallway and it shifts roles without changing character. The warm texture of the cork sits alongside the kinds of materials, and its sandy color sits comfortably against most interior palettes.

Most multifunctional objects succeed at one thing and compromise on everything else. Corctus earns its place as a sculptural form first, and the utility follows naturally from the shape rather than being imposed on it. There are no brackets, no hooks, no panels, and no assembly decisions to make. It stands where it’s put, and the room tends to organize itself around it.

Streaming Took Something From Us. The ENSA T1 Wants It Back

Do you remember the last time music actually demanded something of you? Not just your attention while you scrolled, but your hands. The deliberate pull of a record from its sleeve. The small, mechanical click of a CD case. The unhurried ritual that came before every song, every mood shift, every late-night session on the floor with the volume just loud enough. Vladimir Dubrovin remembers. The California-based multidisciplinary designer has been quietly building a case for returning physicality to the act of listening, and with the ENSA T1, his latest concept design, the argument gets considerably harder to dismiss.

The T1 is the newest addition to Dubrovin’s ENSA line, an evolving design series that began with the ENSA P1, a portable audio player concept that reimagined what a music device could look and feel like in the post-streaming era. The P1 introduced Dubrovin’s concept of C-NAND cartridges: small, disc-shaped, solid-state storage units where each cartridge holds one complete album. There are no moving parts, no spinning mechanisms. They’re fully digital in how they handle audio, but they exist in the physical world the way vinyl does. You pick one up, turn it over, look at it, choose it. The act of choosing your music becomes deliberate again, and that matters more than it sounds.

Where the P1 was built for portability and kept its design trim and pocketable, the T1 feels like the next chapter. Visually and conceptually, it carries the same DNA: clean, considered industrial design with an aluminum body and restrained detailing. But the T1 reads as something more anchored, a device you set somewhere permanent and return to, rather than slip into a bag. It’s a design that seems to understand the difference between music you consume and music you actually sit down for.

Aesthetically, Dubrovin’s approach has always felt less like tech product design and more like furniture-level thinking. The ENSA devices belong to the same visual conversation as early Braun electronics or a Dieter Rams concept sketch, where every detail either earns its place or gets removed entirely. The T1 continues that restraint. Its form doesn’t shout, which is precisely why it catches your eye. In a market saturated with speakers shaped like pebbles and smart displays with glowing rings, an audio device that looks like it was designed by someone who genuinely thought about what it means to own a piece of music is genuinely refreshing.

The broader question Dubrovin keeps posing with the ENSA project is one worth sitting with: what did we actually lose when music went weightless? Streaming solved convenience so completely that most of us never stopped to notice what the tradeoff cost. We gained access to everything and lost the kind of focus that comes from committing to a single album, from having music you could see, hold, or lend to a friend. The ENSA T1 is not trying to compete with Spotify. It’s asking whether the experience of music could mean something again, even if you have to build an entirely new format to get there.

It’s a concept project, not a product you can buy, and the realist in me knows that’s a significant caveat. Building out a new physical media format in 2026 is an uphill proposition at best. The infrastructure alone, manufacturing cartridges, convincing labels, and getting devices into homes, would require a level of industry commitment that’s difficult to imagine right now. But design concepts don’t have to ship to matter. The best ones articulate a desire most people feel but haven’t named yet, and the ENSA T1 does exactly that. The desire for music that has weight, that takes up space, that gives you something to do with your hands before the first note plays.

That’s why Dubrovin’s work keeps getting attention. The ENSA line isn’t nostalgic in the way that feels defensive or retrograde. It’s just honest about the fact that we traded something real for something convenient, and it’s asking, politely but persistently, if we’d like it back.

The Luxury Hotel Concept That Works Like a Food Truck for Wilderness

Luxury hotels have always had a location problem. The kinds of places that would make the most extraordinary backdrops, remote desert plains, rolling highland meadows, dramatic canyon edges, are almost never the places where a hotel can legally or practically be built. Extending infrastructure to those sites, from power grids to road access to permanent foundations, tends to either cost too much or damage the very landscape that made the location worth visiting.

The Mobiltels concept approaches hospitality from a completely different direction. Rather than building a permanent structure and hoping the location is compelling enough, each Mobiltel unit is designed to fold into a compact, truck-towable trailer, be driven to wherever the landscape is most remarkable, and then unfold into a functioning luxury accommodation. When the stay is over, it packs up and leaves without leaving much evidence behind.

Three distinct unit types make up the proposed resort ecosystem. The first is the guest accommodation module, which deploys into two full hotel-style rooms, each with a private bath and its own private deck. The roof extends into a communal deck shaded by solar panels that generate the electricity to power the unit, while a second panel mounted on the exterior heats the water. The entire structure, decks and all, folds back into a trailer tight enough to tow down a highway.

The second unit is a solar-powered café and coffee shop that unfolds to reveal four outdoor dining decks with full kitchen and restroom facilities. The third is a large shade structure intended for gatherings, private events, and communal lounging, built as a striking open lattice that collapses into a flat-load trailer for transport. Additional unit types can theoretically follow the same logic, meaning a full resort amenity list could be assembled and disassembled as needed.

The off-grid energy system is what makes the location independence real rather than theoretical. Every unit generates and manages its own power and heated water from the sun, which means no connecting to local utilities and no requiring a serviced campsite. The Mobiltels concept borrows the transport logic of one and applies it to the aesthetic ambitions of the other, with the result that a high-end resort becomes as relocatable as a food truck. The result sits somewhere between architecture and expedition equipment, which is probably exactly the right place for it.

5 Home Objects That Look Like They Belong in a Design Museum but Cost Less Than a Dinner Out

The design museum makes one quiet argument. Certain objects deserve to be looked at, and how a thing is made can matter as much as what it does. Most people accept this on a Saturday afternoon in front of a Noguchi lamp or an Eames chair, then go home to a shelf full of things nobody chose with the same intention. That gap is worth closing, and it does not require a renovation budget.

These six objects cost somewhere between a round of drinks and a dinner for two. None are functional in the way a charging cable is functional. They are functional in the way a good room is, changing how a space reads and getting noticed before anyone can articulate why. That quality has very little to do with price and everything to do with knowing where to look for it.

1. Carte Blanche Ceramics

Dutch designer Annebet Philips began this collection in cardboard rather than clay, cutting shapes with deliberately uneven edges and treating the paper prototype as the design language itself rather than a step to be discarded. Belgian brand Serax carries the result through to porcelain: a coffee and tea service that has since grown to include plates, a breakfast bowl, an egg cup, and a salt and pepper set. Every piece started as a childlike cutout on a blank page. Nothing about that origin was smoothed away in production.

What makes each piece genuinely strange is that it reads as a drawing of itself. Hand-painted black lines trace every fold and seam, giving cups and saucers the flattened quality of ink on paper rather than fired ceramic. Photographed straight on, a cup collapses into what looks like a quick sketch, the handle reading as a doodled loop rather than a ceramic ear. Everything is microwave and dishwasher safe, which keeps the concept in daily use rather than retreating to a shelf nobody touches.

Kenji Abe’s ECHO arrives from the opposite direction. It is a glazed ceramic chamber built on the acoustic logic of a seashell and a cupped hand that looks exactly like a small vase. Slide a phone underneath, and the cavity carries audio outward in soft, diffused waves. No power. No pairing. Nothing to charge or set up.

The decision to use ceramic was not incidental. Ceramic belongs to the visual grammar of a home, the language of objects that have simply always been there, and ECHO uses that familiarity to disappear into a room entirely. A guest would not identify it as a speaker. The glazed surface catches light the way pottery does, and when the phone is gone, it stays on the shelf with the composure of something that was never trying to perform in the first place.

Every day, thousands of tons of cut flowers are incinerated at flower markets because they reached the end of their shelf life before a buyer arrived. Rebloom Studio, a Korean design practice, collects those discarded blooms, processes them into pulp with Korean paper pulp and a natural binder, and molds the result around an interior glass cylinder. The finished piece is a vase made entirely from flowers that never got the chance to be seen by anyone.

No two Petal Vases look alike. The flowers used to make each one determine its final color, texture, and edge profile. The jagged rim, the petal compression visible in the walls, the slight asymmetry in the silhouette- all of it is preserved deliberately rather than corrected in finishing. When the vase reaches the end of its life, the biodegradable shell returns to the earth. It is one of those rare objects where the material story requires no explanation because you can already see exactly where it came from.

4. Delicato Tray

The entryway surface tells a familiar story, and it is rarely flattering. Keys land wherever there is space, coins scatter to the edges, a watch ends up beside a receipt from last week. Joao Teixeira’s Delicato Tray for Oftwise is cast from Jesmonite AC730, a water-based, fire-rated stone composite, in the form of a rippled disc. The concentric waves are asymmetric by design: wider at the outer ring for keys and glasses, tighter toward the center for rings and coins.

At the center of those ripples sits a recessed pocket sized for a tealight candle, turning the daily ritual of dropping your things at the door into something closer to a ceremony. Because the tray is hand-cast, no two are identical. Small air bubbles, subtle texture variations, and minor color shifts are natural byproducts of the process. The result is two kilograms of warm sandy stone that makes a surface look deliberately arranged before anything has been placed on it at all.

What we like

  • The hierarchy is built into the form itself, so organization becomes almost unconscious
  • Hand-cast production means no two pieces are identical, in the way that actually matters

What we dislike

  • At €235 it sits at the very top of the dinner framing, and that math depends on which dinner you have in mind
  • Currently available in one color, which limits how it integrates into darker or cooler interiors

5. Luna

Robert Spillner spent years building components for Formula 1 teams before reversing the entire premise of his career. Instead of measuring speed, he built an object that stages time. Luna is a 400 x 400mm wall piece framed in matte black solid wood with a cast acrylic pane at its center. Inside, a single pointer moves through Zero Flow Technology, Spillner’s proprietary fluid made from distilled water, additives, micro-particles, and a small quantity of genuine lunar dust. Behind the pointer, turbulent patterns mark what has passed. Ahead of it, the liquid sits completely undisturbed.

The exact composition of the fluid is deliberately undisclosed, and that is the right call. The lunar dust is certified and billions of years old, documented with a certificate of authenticity that ships with each piece. Every Luna is signed, numbered, and limited to 99 per year, all made on demand in Germany. A small LCD touchscreen adjusts time and brightness without competing visually with the fluid. Spillner describes it as an art object with a time function, and the order of those words is correct.

What we like
