One of my goals for the rest of the year is to actually start the thing that I promised myself I would start at the beginning of 2025: running, or at least brisk walking. One of the problems that I faced before, when I was still doing that, was that I did not invest in good running shoes. The ones I used were either not that comfortable or would show wear and tear just a few weeks in. Nike has been recommended to me many times, and seeing that they will soon be releasing next-level sneakers may encourage me to finally invest in a pair.

Buildings are responsible for a huge share of global carbon emissions, especially during the production of materials like cement. Traditional concrete manufacturing is one of the biggest sources of CO2 worldwide. If we can switch to materials that don’t just stop this but even use CO2 to our advantage, then we can make a big difference in fighting climate change. Imagine a future where our homes and offices not only look beautiful but also help clean the air by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2).

Thanks to a team of scientists at ETH Zurich, that future might be closer than we think. They have developed a remarkable new building material that doesn’t just sit there. It’s actually alive and actively helping the planet. This groundbreaking material is a type of concrete, but with a twist: it contains living bacteria. These aren’t just any bacteria as they are specially chosen because they can turn carbon dioxide from the air into solid minerals. That means while regular concrete actually releases CO2 during its production, this living material absorbs it, helping to reduce greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

Inside the material, millions of bacteria are hard at work. These bacteria are fed a mixture of nutrients, including calcium. When they “eat,” they react with CO2 in the air, producing solid calcium carbonate. This process is similar to how seashells form in nature. Over time, the bacteria help the material grow stronger while trapping more carbon dioxide. The scientists designed their material to be porous, which means it has lots of tiny holes. These holes give bacteria plenty of room to live and work, while also allowing air to pass through so the bacteria can capture CO2 efficiently.

The new living material could be used in walls, floors, or even outdoor structures. Imagine a city full of buildings that quietly soak up CO2 day after day, making the air cleaner for everyone. But the benefits don’t stop there. The production of this living material uses less energy than regular concrete. Plus, the process is designed to be sustainable from start to finish. I have a friend who has more than two cats and she always tells me that the most stressful part about being a cat parent is the constant cleaning of the litter box. And more often than not, these litter boxes are eyesores that you have to hide when you have visitors (or hide from your own eyes as well).

To say that the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett has a cult following is one of the biggest understatements in book world. It’s a pretty long series but for the fans, it isn’t just a fantasy series. It’s a universe, brimming with wit, wisdom, and unforgettable characters. The thought of having every Discworld book at your fingertips is a collector’s fantasy of course. For Martina of the Nerdforge YouTube channel, she went one step further in terms of treasuring this beloved book series.

The Nerdforge channel is a blackhole when it comes to nerdy and book-related projects. Martina has completed her most audacious build yet: transforming all 40 of Terry Pratchett’s beloved Discworld novels into a single, awe-inspiring, rotating book wheel. After collecting the entire series, she literally bound them together, creating a unique piece of bookish art that’s both a tribute and a conversation starter.

Martina, who has a passion for bookbinding and DIY, decided to take on this mammoth project as her very first mechanical build. Her idea was both whimsical and practical in the most Nerdforge way: she would bind all 40 Discworld books and arrange them around a massive wooden wheel. With a hand crank, the entire collection could rotate, displaying each novel in turn like a carousel of literary delight. The final creation is almost comically large—boasting about 14,000 pages!

Each book is individually bound, then carefully attached to the wheel in a circle. The result is a functional, if not exactly “practical,” rotating book that is as much a sculptural object as it is a reading tool. Martina said that if she could do it all over again, she would have wanted to create something that you could actually use to read the massive collection. But for now, it’s a beautiful testament to what you can create if you just let your imagination run wild.

PU foam is a petrochemical product that requires isocyanates as a propellant during manufacturing. It is widely used in upholstered furniture and is a big problem in the furniture industry. It off-gases, loses support over time, is flammable and therefore dangerous, has a short lifespan, and poses environmental hazards when downcycled or incinerated. Of course the industry cannot stop producing things like sofas and chairs so it’s better to find an alternative to this material.

The SHRINX Easy Chair marks a groundbreaking milestone in sustainable furniture design. Crafted in collaboration with +Halle® and realized using the innovative SHRINX 4903 fabric from Krall+Roth, this lounge chair eliminates traditional polyurethane (PU) foam entirely and offers a radical rethinking of comfort, aesthetics, and ecological responsibility.
